Greeat interview. Todd's well read and intelligent. But he said the figures don't mean anything to him. Isnt that how so many recording artists got screwed by their labels, managers, etc??
His narcisistic ego has always been a "turn off" to me. It's one thing to follow your heart and not sell out, but then to tell the fans, "screw you, if you don't understand what I'm doing", I have a REAL problem with that!
Somewhere I saw a UTOPIA "rider" that said what is required for him and his crew at shows. This was around '78. I remember Heineken beer only, a certain kind of water, and something to the effect of "definitely no meat", but it was written in a funny/sarcastic way. At the time I thought, "wow, how pompous", now I realize, he had a lot of people to please, so to get what he demanded from them, one hand washes the other.
I always loved TR's music, but had no idea about his groundedness & wisdom. It's mindblowing considering how young he was here, and the insanity of fame & fortune that was a signature of his time. Few of his contemporaries were this together, and continued to be so . An incredibly articulate & wise man. Thanks so much for posting this...
This interview would have been towards the end or right after the recording of "Initiation", so maybe he was talking about "The Wheel". He may have been planning on using that on a solo album.
