As long as your live rock keeps up with your bio-load (which is high for a 10 gal) and you have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and low nitrates, then more power to you keeping 4 fish in a 10 gal aquarium. You might want to look into modifying a protein skimmer from an Oceanic BioCube, if you really are interested in having a protein skimmer. And check my page and vids out some time.
Looks good. Your "bubble coral" actually looks like it is a frogspawn coral. And overcrowding is less about territory disputes (although chromis are damsels, so keep an eye out for aggressive behavior) and more about biological filtration.
can you give us a real price please a couple hundred dollars isnt very specific oh yes i am suprised at how healthy and happy all of the lifeforms look i thought they would be cramped good job
Just wonderin, do you know if the water you use is Reverse Osmisis water? Because I am also starting a 10 gallon nano tank but I can't get RO water near me, so I'm trying to figure out what to do.
Actually most marine aquarists use no filtration ate all, usually a protein skimmer for bigger tanks. but if it's a nano like this one, it is a good idea to use a filter, since the use of a skimmer would make no difference.
@bntv29 yea i already know, I would personally prefer both though in a big tank just for a healthier enviroment! But yea i do agree it would be a good idea to keep a filter in a small tank ;) h_h
For a hang on back protein skimmer try this site: aquatraders . com it might help. I had once a set up much like yours and I miss it, I might set it up once again. Thank you for sharing your tank.
So i am looking into starting a saltwater aquarium. The tank is 45 gallons. What equipment will i need? I know with my uncles old 90 gallon, he had so much equipment! Calcium drips, all sorts of skimmers. Do i need all of this for a small coral tank? Can i just use a skimmer and wet/dry filter setup?
hello, this question has nothing to do with you video all though i love the tank, but you seem to know your facts when it comes to fish keeping, i have a ten gallon fresh water tank with the aqueon filter you recomended so much. and the tank has three zebra danios all about an inch to an inch and a half, one inch and a half red platy and one 2 and a quarter inch gold gourami, im just wondering if you think these fish have enough living space.(hoping you have knowledge of the fish i have)
Very cool, I've been thinking for creating a similiar nano tank of 10 gallons partly for a Red reef lobster, maybe a few skunk cleaning shrimps and a couple of clown fish. Was wondering if you could recommend any other additions to the tank itself and anything I should look out for?
Overstocking usually isn't bad because territory, but because the tank cant really handle it, its biological filtration cant handle it. Your tank looks fine though, with enough filtration it should be able to handle the fish that are in there.
Great looking 10 gallon nano. You do not have to buy a skimmer for the same gallon as your tank. It is actually better buying a skimmer rated bigger gallons than your tank. I would say for your tank to get a 30 to 50 gallon rated skimmer it would be much better than that hang on filter besides that filter will give you high nitrates. =)
i have 2 tomato's clown and scopas tang +unicorn tang and a firefish and id say thats enough lol i think later il still to to percula clownfish and thats it let them breed lol :) nice vid
Most people would find six fish to be a little overstocked, however it depends on whether there are live corals in your tank. If it is a fish only system, there will not be any corals that will become irritated from the large bioload, so you can put more fish in the tank. But I still see six fish to be quite a bit. If it is a freshwater setup, I have seen 10 fish in the tank with no problems. So it depends on different factors.
Absolutely. There are many videos on YouTube of people's anemones in their 10 gallon nano reefs. However, you might be taking a chance by putting it in there. Anemones will almost always move around your tank to a spot that they desire, and it being such a small tank, there is a high probability that they are going to run into one of your corals and start stinging it. That is why it is recommended to put the anemone in first before any corals, and allow it to find a spot it likes.
ya they make a skimmer for your tank its called a nano fission skimmer i have one but lost a peace to it because it broke and then i fixed it and also he is using a corallife fixture it has 2 bulbs that look like 4 cause its compact cause i have the one made for a 20 gallon tank but use it for my 10 gallons so i can run 5 watts per a gallon cause if u dont have something running atleast 3.5 per a gallon your corals wont live but thats a nice tank you have for not having a sump or portein skimmer
yeah i am 13 and i pay for it and i have a 55 gallon and T5 30 gallon sump and skimmer and stand and rock. first of all i make my own rock buy used stuff and do lots of chores
Hey man nice tank. Just to let you know, they do make and sell nano skimmers for 10 gal reef tanks. You can get it for around $40. I was going to buy one for mine, but my wife and I are going to get a 125 to 180 gal tank sometime in the future. Take a look at my reef videos, I have 3 vids. But what's sad is I just lost my Staghorn and Chesterfield Acros just last week. They were doing fine and then got sick. They made my Disc coral sick too and it may die. Let me know whay you think.
I disagree. If anything, a skimmer only enhances bacterial growth by providing more surface area, dissolving more oxygen in the water for the bacteria to live upon, and by enhancing growth in the chamber in particular because of the froth of oxygen bubbles.
Have a quick question do you NEED corals for and all that and whats the purpose of corals?never really found that out though ive been studying reef tanks for quite a while. And for live rock do you need any specified lighting?Because I'd rather not buy expensive lighting for anything that's unnecessary! I just want a firefish and a clown in a 10 gallon with 10 lbs of live rock, koralia powerhead w/ skilter 250 5 lbs live sand w/ several inverts and do you need to add trace elements for the lr?
Corals are absolutely not necessary for a saltwater aquarium and they don't really do anything for the tank. The reason for corals is the simple reason of making the hobby ten times more interesting. It is much more of a challenge, entertainment factor, value, and rewarding to have a diverse reef tank with many different organisms and corals to take care of, rather than just having fish swim around rocks that can be rather boring. Continue below.
Well besides from using a reef safe commercial product specially formulated to lower pH, try doing a small water change. Doing a water change will help remove some of the high pH water and you can then replace it with water that has a lower pH. If the problem is persistent, then either your replacement water already has a high pH, something in your aquarium is elevating the pH level, or your water contains too much calcium.
If you are referring to the saltwater that I use for my tank, I buy it at my local aquarium store. I bring 2 five gallon containers and they fill them with saltwater for 25¢ a gallon. It is becoming more and more popular however to install a water purification system in your house and use a synthetic salt mix to make your own saltwater. This is just as good but is not recommended with water that has not been purified.
I don't really remember the price of these corals due to the fact that they were some of the first corals I put in the tank. However, I can imagine both of them were probably around $20. My local aquarium store gives very good deals on coral frags and these frags were much smaller when I first got them.
Nice tank, fish will have little skirmishes like at 3:31 regardless even if there were only 2 fish in the tank. Also protein skimmers are not necessary and in many cases can be counter productive to your beneficial bacteria spawning. Dont get me wrong skimmers are worthwhile in large tanks, however in smaller ones like this, they aren't necessary and sometimes make your tank take much longer to settle a balanced ecology.
Im not sure he will need one in that size tank i have seen loads of tanks that size in fish stores and they dont use one they will only been needed in a tank round about 20 gallon and up. Also his tank looks and healthy and so does his fish so he doesnt need it
hey I was thinkin about getting this same size tank wit a clownfish an was wondering would I have a problem cuz it will b my first fish tank an I really want that clownfish
Well usually people start out with a freshwater aquarium rather than a saltwater tank, as it is usually much easier to maintain and is much less expensive. If you want to start up saltwater, buy a few books and do a lot of research before starting it. Without the knowledge it requires, you could be heading for disaster.
I test the water twice a week, with no ammonia, pH, nitrite, nitrate, salinity, calcium, hardness, or phosphate problems. 4 fish in a 10 gallon aquarium is not enough to cause a biological overload. Especially if you have a mature aquarium.
ok just making sure you know what your doing. your tank looks really nice by the way. but it is a high load for saltwater just because you have to keep on top of things but you know what your doing so its all good.
i have 2 yellowtail blue damsels that i have in my 30 g biocube i need help, because they always attack my new fish i try to put in there and they killed all of my other fish like my clarki clown, and a pearl headed jaawfish, i cant catch them with a net and i want to remove them can you please tell me how?
you said you cant find a protein skimmer for it... i have seen, not sure how good they work, but i have seen one made for a biocube that is like 4-5 inches tall and i have seen one that is built into a HOB filter.
People keep telling me about the protein skimmer made for the biocube, so I think I'm going to take a look at that one. But as for the power filter with the built in protein skimmer, more commonly known as a "skilter-filter", I have checked that one out and the output of the filter seems to be a little too powerful for my small tank.
I don't really recall considering I purchased the coral quite a while ago. As far as I can remember, it was around $30 or $40 at my local aquarium store.
It's not really a matter of difficulty. It's more of a concern as to whether you have the right equipment, materials and tank conditions to support the corals. For example, you must have a powerful lighting system over your aquarium, the tank must be very well filtered, and the tank's water quality and chemistry must fall under specific perimeters.
Yes, when the tank was first started, is was much more difficult to maintain water quality. Since there is no biological filter in the tank when you first set it up to convert all of those ammonias and nitrites into safer compounds, and to break down the fish waste, the water quality is very unstable and the first few fish that are introduced into the tank may die. But once the tank has an established bio-filter, water quality becomes much more stable.
If there are living corals in the tank, then a strong light system over the tank is definitely required. Otherwise, light is not necessary. However, it is definitely recommended for two reasons, the fish should have some type of light to cycle through their day and night behaviors, and so that you can examine the tank much easier to make sure everything is healthy.
Well maybe I know it is hard to find a small protein skimmer. what you could do is try to construct a external unit but all in all it does not really look like you need one you have a small but effecient filter you good purple and green algae your tank is awesome and i love the rock scape
Very cool tank. In your opinion are reef tanks more complex to care for than freshwater? Are they more expensive to care for? I ask because I have only ever done freshwater and I am a little afraid to take the leap. lol
Believe it or not, saltwater is not far off at all from keeping freshwater. You still do regular maintenance, test the water, and everything else you would in a freshwater aquarium. It's just that the fish, water chemistry, and other things require different approaches then they do in freshwater. But it is not more difficult to care for. Continue below!!
its possible but a waste of time lol ur better off with the aqueon and an aqua clear 30 lol filtration is basically ur live rock ammo chips and phos remover try to stay away from carbon but if ur tank clouds up leave carbon in there for a day or 2
i love a tank with juts a sch of green chromis great tank it looks soo nice with black bg
The filter is a 100 GPH Aqueon power filter. The tank is heated with a 5o watt heater, and there is a 100 GPH circulation pump. The lighting is a 36 watt power compact fluorescent fixture.
Really, I wouldn't put any more then one fish inside. But if you find a small enough fish, you may be able to fit a second one in. You can still put a lot of scavengers inside such as snails and crabs.
nice tank bro looks good i use to have a 10 gallon reef tank then i moved up to a 40 gallon reef i love it i just bought a 400 dallor light for my tank its tight i comes with a built in timer check out my vids ill be posting up a new update
overcrowding isnt refering to them getting along, it is their space requirements/ living conditions. they will outgrow the 10 and the grape coral is a hammer i think. im not sure it really isnt all the way open.
u dont need skimmer just do weekly water changes i recommend you take out the aqueon cartridge and just stick a sponge pad in there carbon absorbs nutrients. the only filtration u need in this small tank is biological and ur cleaner crew, which which what im running as. also if u do want a skimmer get the skilter 250 its good stuff check out my tank when u ahve a chance!
I am considering keeping a peacock mantis shrimp any tips on food and maintenance?

I think I would know that it is for sure a 10 gallon aquarium.

Almost2old4this 2 years ago
hey I was thinkin about getting this same size tank wit a clownfish an was wondering would I have a problem cuz it will b my first fish tank an I really want that clownfish
AlreadyBro 2 years ago
Well usually people start out with a freshwater aquarium rather than a saltwater tank, as it is usually much easier to maintain and is much less expensive. If you want to start up saltwater, buy a few books and do a lot of research before starting it. Without the knowledge it requires, you could be heading for disaster.
quaqa88 2 years ago
can you post a new update on your tank. i really want to see how it is looking
hotdoghee123 2 years ago
are u going to keep a xenia coral in their too?

STEELDIRTLORD15 2 years ago
can i get one of your starfish if you get rid of one
STEELDIRTLORD15 2 years ago
dude its not a matter of the fish getting along its the biological overload thats dangerous!
bananatree94 2 years ago
I test the water twice a week, with no ammonia, pH, nitrite, nitrate, salinity, calcium, hardness, or phosphate problems. 4 fish in a 10 gallon aquarium is not enough to cause a biological overload. Especially if you have a mature aquarium.
quaqa88 2 years ago
ok just making sure you know what your doing. your tank looks really nice by the way. but it is a high load for saltwater just because you have to keep on top of things but you know what your doing so its all good.
bananatree94 2 years ago
how much would be a set up of a 10 gal Salt water tank if i got the fish you have a heater and a filter?

i have 2 yellowtail blue damsels that i have in my 30 g biocube i need help, because they always attack my new fish i try to put in there and they killed all of my other fish like my clarki clown, and a pearl headed jaawfish, i cant catch them with a net and i want to remove them can you please tell me how?
goyt4 2 years ago
you said you cant find a protein skimmer for it... i have seen, not sure how good they work, but i have seen one made for a biocube that is like 4-5 inches tall and i have seen one that is built into a HOB filter.
papichancho1234 2 years ago
People keep telling me about the protein skimmer made for the biocube, so I think I'm going to take a look at that one. But as for the power filter with the built in protein skimmer, more commonly known as a "skilter-filter", I have checked that one out and the output of the filter seems to be a little too powerful for my small tank.

what do u have in ur 10g sw tank as in the equipment u need to have a sw tank...?
Thiswarisours56212 2 years ago
how much did you pay for the green star pol.
hotdoghee123 2 years ago
I don't really recall considering I purchased the coral quite a while ago. As far as I can remember, it was around $30 or $40 at my local aquarium store.
quaqa88 2 years ago
how hard is it to keep a live coral??
c00lb0y10 2 years ago
It's not really a matter of difficulty. It's more of a concern as to whether you have the right equipment, materials and tank conditions to support the corals. For example, you must have a powerful lighting system over your aquarium, the tank must be very well filtered, and the tank's water quality and chemistry must fall under specific perimeters.
quaqa88 2 years ago
ok thanks
c00lb0y10 2 years ago
what kind of daily maintenence did you have to do when the tank was first becoming established? was it difficult to maintain water quality?
tastythighs180 2 years ago
Yes, when the tank was first started, is was much more difficult to maintain water quality. Since there is no biological filter in the tank when you first set it up to convert all of those ammonias and nitrites into safer compounds, and to break down the fish waste, the water quality is very unstable and the first few fish that are introduced into the tank may die. But once the tank has an established bio-filter, water quality becomes much more stable.

do you need a light or not cause i have one tank and its not so big and i dont have a light? is that good or bad?
aninhabrazil2650 2 years ago
If there are living corals in the tank, then a strong light system over the tank is definitely required. Otherwise, light is not necessary. However, it is definitely recommended for two reasons, the fish should have some type of light to cycle through their day and night behaviors, and so that you can examine the tank much easier to make sure everything is healthy.

nice tank and fishes

how much did light cost
scout820 2 years ago
Coralife Power Compact light fixture costed about %80 at my local aquarium store.
quaqa88 2 years ago
Excellent tank!!! can you please explain about the water chemistry of your reef aquarium
nick360700 2 years ago
Well maybe I know it is hard to find a small protein skimmer. what you could do is try to construct a external unit but all in all it does not really look like you need one you have a small but effecient filter you good purple and green algae your tank is awesome and i love the rock scape
saltwaterfishguy427 2 years ago
Very cool tank. In your opinion are reef tanks more complex to care for than freshwater? Are they more expensive to care for? I ask because I have only ever done freshwater and I am a little afraid to take the leap. lol
contentunderpresure 2 years ago
Believe it or not, saltwater is not far off at all from keeping freshwater. You still do regular maintenance, test the water, and everything else you would in a freshwater aquarium. It's just that the fish, water chemistry, and other things require different approaches then they do in freshwater. But it is not more difficult to care for. Continue below!!

great tank! do u have a refugium?
rzrbkboy 2 years ago
Thanks. No I do not have a refugium, and I do not know if it would be possible to make one for a nano tank such as this one.
quaqa88 2 years ago
its possible but a waste of time lol ur better off with the aqueon and an aqua clear 30 lol filtration is basically ur live rock ammo chips and phos remover try to stay away from carbon but if ur tank clouds up leave carbon in there for a day or 2
i love a tank with juts a sch of green chromis great tank it looks soo nice with black bg

how much was your light and where did you get it
hotdoghee123 2 years ago
I got the aquarium light at my local aquarium store. It was sold of about $80. It may sound like a lot of money but it is definitely worth it.

sanzogenso 2 years ago
Hey dude what kind of equipment are u using for your fish tank? what kind of filter u are using please reply? nice tank too?
anthonymovies4 2 years ago
The filter is a 100 GPH Aqueon power filter. The tank is heated with a 5o watt heater, and there is a 100 GPH circulation pump. The lighting is a 36 watt power compact fluorescent fixture.
quaqa88 2 years ago
you say that they dont sell skimmers for that small of a tank? I have a 2.5gal mini bow REEF with a prizm skimmer. Check them out!
Cre8ruckas215 2 years ago
Really, I have never seen a skimmer for such a small aquarium. Can you send me a link to this specific one?
quaqa88 2 years ago
i have the same tank but its fresh water with 4 fish
rickyrichard22 2 years ago
how many fish could be in a 5 gallon nano reef tank
cause i have a five gallon that im not using all my fish are in my 20 gallon
rickyrichard22 2 years ago
Really, I wouldn't put any more then one fish inside. But if you find a small enough fish, you may be able to fit a second one in. You can still put a lot of scavengers inside such as snails and crabs.
quaqa88 2 years ago
very nice tank
hotdoghee123 2 years ago
nice tank bro looks good i use to have a 10 gallon reef tank then i moved up to a 40 gallon reef i love it i just bought a 400 dallor light for my tank its tight i comes with a built in timer check out my vids ill be posting up a new update
socalreef252 2 years ago
overcrowding isnt refering to them getting along, it is their space requirements/ living conditions. they will outgrow the 10 and the grape coral is a hammer i think. im not sure it really isnt all the way open.
rmrrac3r 2 years ago
great tank
jamesthefisherman88 2 years ago
u dont need skimmer just do weekly water changes i recommend you take out the aqueon cartridge and just stick a sponge pad in there carbon absorbs nutrients. the only filtration u need in this small tank is biological and ur cleaner crew, which which what im running as. also if u do want a skimmer get the skilter 250 its good stuff check out my tank when u ahve a chance!
hahaitzkevinxp 2 years ago
hey do you think a should get a 29gal saltwater tank in july?
