I think Russia wants to be in the EU but it wants to get Ukraine, Belarus, Kazhakstan and a couple others maybe back under its wing before it joins.

Why would the EU want to accept a corrupt, dictatorial country into its club? Russia isn't even European in the sense that it's mostly in Asia. Russia also missed out on the formative experiences of the rest of Europe: Roman imperialism, Western Christianity, the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution (realistically). And I don't think that the EU has room for empires which is what the Russian "Federation" is after all.

I'm from Russia and I can tell you that you're right to some extent, Russia is not European in many ways, it's land area, population and historic experience are different from the rest of Europe but still connected. Peter I forcibly Europeanized Russia several centuries ago, but still Russi is not Asian even in it's Asian part. I would say that Russia is a civilizational sister of Europe. Russia shouldn't be in the EU, it will change it and not in the best way.

All the economical and political alliances are temporary, although previously it seemed as if the western system is stable. In fact it is not. Chinese, Indian, Russian and Arabic capital will soon oust the remaining western corporation out of their "traditional" domains, and then Europe will come to us to seek for new agreements on our conditions.

Hi, I'm Russian and I just want to tell you: Be realistic! You say that Russia doesn't need European greed but hey, they are our top consumer and they pay the money that we use to modernize our military and pay pensions. They buy, we sell and that's all. They need gas/oil but we need their money, resources are our main export. We don't produce great cars like Germany, we're not the best in technology, so our only choice is to pump oil/gas and sell to Europeans because they pay in Euros.
