There is an awesome offer at ezlaptop (dot) com (slash) (question mark) r=841770 (use period instead of word dot and such) where all you have to do is read emails to get a free laptop.
I think the point is to give them old textbooks that have been made free, or to allow them to access free educational opportunities such as Khanaccademy and Wikiversity.
this is nice man.... cheap laptop's for everyone that's really cool it can do all the basic stuff like word processing... internet, e mail and stuff... these children could be starting to learn a lot.... i'm thinking of getting one cause these laptops are sooo cool.... these are not Alienware but still these are Gre8 laptop's which has a decent graphic solution.... Lol children in developing countries have great ideas on some issues which children in developed countries dosent... Thanks man.
LOL i live in denmark and in my school does we have 1 freaking computer per class!!!! wtf why does the poor children live better than the rich!!!!!????? (no offence XD)
i live in denmark too.. the answer is simpel.. most rich people have their own laptops.. the laptops you just saw if far from a gaming laptop and the schools is to greedy to buy a laptop to every student xD
Linux is far less likely to be hacked for one, and it also has lower memory requirements for 2. Also the software can be easily updated, or entirely replaced with Linux. That means anybody can develop on it.
OLPC means every child in the classroom needs the same laptop to affect the usage of it. Even though the child takes it home to work on it alone, part of the point is to collaborate with other students, communicate remotely with the teacher, to let parents see the work process in the journal.
AP doesn't compare actual cost and battery consumption. OLPC XO costs half the price and consumes 10 times less battery then the Classmate PC.
I do remember seeing that model but I think it was scrapped, don't worry the U.N. will get involved and they will set out in the rain on a runway for three years until they can figure out a way to distribute them, then they will need money to clean up the mess left from the batteries. At a cost of three times the laptop that was never used.Sorry I just hate seeing a good idea wasted.
Actually, while neither has a built-in crank, the XO is shipped with either a foot pedal, hand crank, pull cord, or solar panel. It can basicly charge off of anything, from a car battery to a wall socket.
if over here we got pc v.s. mac, then over there would it be OLPC v.s. AP? o-o

Because when we melt in the singeing heat of the sun, our matter will all converse into one, therefore it will be delivered to everyone.
OLPC is a FAIL. They promised 100 dollar laptops and delivered 200 dollar ones. I can get 200 dolalr ones way better than their shit.
Cherrypal has a 100 dollar netbook for sale right now that is very good.

I think it's funny there is a HUGE PUSH to get laptops into every kids hands
BUT
The idea of simply publishing textbooks online, textbooks that are paid for by public money, there's absolutely no initiative to provide that.

from the website for OLPC it states it has the crank-charging.
I bet the people who got to test both machines had less issues with OLPC, whoever came up with the idea clearly knew that linux was the best bet.
At least kids are getting computers though :)

Understood, Yea the crank is a great idea IMO. How could it be any more ideal for an area where electricity isn't always available.
