Great movie and fantastic music! As a real old school jazz fan
I love this stuff.
And although they are fantastic sax players I hear a lot of Redman and Carter
but no Bean and certainly no Young. Listen to the real Hawkins and Young and you know what I mean. And I just can't get over it that while all the efforts were made to create a real 30's scene how can one make such a stupid mistake with the modern archtop guitar? To me that like holding a mobile phone in a pre-war movie scene.

Excelente la película y disfrutabilísimo el documental. Como pocas veces he gozado tanto un documental musical! Maravillosos músicos y notable rodaje!!
Yeah! Now, that's classic jazz at it's coolest and grooviest! I totally agree and it is a crying shame that the movie Kansas City can be found only on VHS not on DVD! Gee whiz! I've even tried feverishly to find this good movie on DVD with no success. Oh well. Only thing about this movie is I didn't really care for Jennifer Jason Leah's character that much! Could be just me. Anyways, thank you again for this hip swingin video! :)
@MAnuciao79 I totally agree about Blu-Ray! Since my original post, I have found out that there are some people selling burned copies of the tape on DVD-R, including the folks at Rhapsody Films, who published the original VHS tape, which is now out of print. Don't know current prices, but the last time I checked, Rhapsody Films was selling the DVD-R for FIVE DOLLARS!! ($5.00) The out-of-print tape, meanwhile, was selling on Amazon for $100.00! :P
That's the big man, Brother Christian McBride, thumpin' the upright bass here, not Ray Brown. And that's Victor Lewis on drums. "Fathead" is not in this clip, either. The saxophonists are Joshua Redman and James Carter along with Russell Malone on guitar, Don Byron on clarinet and Ms. Geri Allen on piano.
The clip is from the movie "Jazz 34 - Kansas City" by Robert Altman. This documentary movie followed his other move "Kansas City". Both are well worth watching.
Olu Dara is credited playing the Cornet only (not saxophone) on the inside credits of the Kansas City "After Dark" recording, but as a Trumpet player on the outside credits. The Soundtrack recording credits Olu as playing the Cornet only.
Don Byron is credited with being on Clarinet and Saxophone.
Kevin Mahogany is the vocalist (bartender) in the movie.
Trombones are Curtis Fowlkes and Clark Gayton.
Kandie Webster in Washington State ~~ jazzylover59
Fantastic !! I've got the whole film on DVD but this, and the other band scenes, are the only bits worth watching. The soundtrack CD's are excellent as well.
sorry for the double posting.

during the credits, at the end, the rendition of Duke's "Solitude" is worth the price of the movie.

It's a crime against humanity that this movie is only available on VHS tape.
