  • This video is full of disinformation. The average CFL only contains about 4mgs of mercury not nearly enough to warrant a hazmat situation. By comparison the average thermometer contains over 500mg of mercury. Furthermore incandescent bulbs have a much greater mercury foot print than CFL's. The production of electricity needed to light a 100 watt Incandescent bulb during its lifespan results in the power plant releasing over 160mgs of mercury into the air just to power that one incandescent bulb

  • Stop whining you will be made to conform in many new areas also ie. healthcare, carbon credits, ect. Get used to it. This is the way of the future. CFLs are superior. Socialism is superior. Government is superior. You are old fashioned have need to step aside and let Change happen. :)

  • @stickedU i am amazed at how capable i am of making you go crazy, even on a utube video. U really have nerve talking about others. This coming from someone who CLAIMS hes a dude and yet has "Women's World" on his pink page. Heres a clue Mr. or should i say MZ.Stickedu, if cfls were superior, people wouldnt be stocking up on old bulbs they wouldnt be repealing the bulb ban. By the way, already 12 states wana repeal the bulb ban. I bet you're blood is boiling now, huh little boy :-D

  • @RandomConcepts u say "make a point not to break a CFL. it's not that hard to avoid." Thats very true. However, accidents do happen once in a while. You say that as if you're perfect and u havent accidently broken anything. So not only are u a moron for believing the "global warming" scam, but u think ur perfect. Maybe the mercury from cfls wont harm u if u accidently break it. But if by any chance u break one and YOU DO get sick, you're gona feel pretty stupid. Which comes natrual for u.

  • Cancers have been on the rise more and more every year! That changes my mind to want to be more cautious regarding already proven health hazards. How about the health hazards that HAVE NOT been studied too much yet such as EMF or dirty electricity? CFL's cause EMF as well and also unfiltered UV known to cause skin reactions. Could EMF in our homes and work-places be a culprit to the rise in cancer cases? Money has been known in many a government to be more important than public safety.

  • @RandomConcepts if u think global warming is caused by man, then you sir are a moron

  • @noreaga12326 Hey everyone I know Noreaga.. He is a person who was sexually abused when he was a child. So he has alot of agression towards authority. His dad was a minister at a small church. He really abused him badly. Its sad so show sympathy for this sad older man. He is very angry now towards government and policies it tries to enact in law. Its okay though we understand it now. Why he is grumpy. I have contacted him to try to make him feel better about himself, still trying though.

  • @stickedU i am truly amazed at how mad i can get you that u would actually make up such a story. when ppl go thru all the trouble, like you're doing.. its usually the other way around. It must really eat u up that people like me refuse to be ruled by government. i StickItToYou that you would want ppl to live like cavemen and believe in all the bull shit that Al Gore preached about global warming. i honestly hope that a doctor can repair the lose wires and screws in that little brain of yours

  • Has a toe growing out of his forehead lmao.

  • We've had fluorescent lights in our daily lives since at least the 1960s ... probably more. You've been duped by the Sean Hannity Corps. He decided that since CFLs save power and money and potentially the environment, they're only fit for Communists ... plus he prefers the dark orange tint of incandescent bulbs to the warmer, yellower light of CFLs. Don't fall back into the dark ages, man. Mercury isn't as dangerous as they say ... the EPA handles us with kid gloves.

  • @kreuztraeger as i said in my other posts, u cant compare CFLs with the other flourecents we have been using for decades. i've heard of ppl getting sick from mercury with CFLs. U may not like incandescents but most ppl do. I pay for my light bill so i will decide what bulbs best suit me. If cfls were "WARMER AND NICER" the government wouldnt be forcing these toxic shit bulbs on us. Ur telling ppl not to fall back into the dark ages but seems to me like ur falling for the green scam.

  • @noreaga12326 - Those people had to have gotten sick from something else. I have broken these things before. I've broken an old style mercury thermometer in my room even. I'm not sick.

The good news is that the new government mandates are fueling research into making the incandescent light bulb more efficient. So maybe one day your 60-watt will look like a 100-watt.

  • @kreuztraeger Good Evening, they are making new incandescents that are more efficient. some of them are actually up to 50% energy efficient which is great news. Plus there are several types of incandescents that are exempt from the ban. just to be clear i have nothing against all flourecent bulbs. I like the old skool circular ones and tubes. But to me, the cfl looks like crap. Whats even more amazing is that some of these moron tree huggers think that using ugly light will save the planet.

  • @kreuztraeger im not sure about the mercury in a CFL. However, i've read about many ppl getting sick, headaches etc etc. maybe theres a lot of mercury in a cfl, mayb not. I'm thinking that even just a bit of mercury can be deadly. They say that a cfl must be properly disposed when they're done. we both know that most ppl will not waste gas money (especially considering the price of gas now a days) to drive to one of those places just to dispose them. doesnt look too promising for CFLs.

  • Don't frightened by what everyone has to say about CFLs. 20 years ago people would play with mercury, now were talking thousands of times the allowed level, and there still alive today. Why you ask, because it only harms you during long exposures, I'm talking weeks or more. Breathing in a light bulbs gas isn't going to harm you. And for those of you who are still worried they can make CFLs that don't contain mercury.

  • @rginter123 if it doesnt worry u, then u break a dozen CFLs in ur house, breathe it in and tell us what happens.

  • Wow this is retarded. Some people freak out when these break, they contain minuscule amounts of mercury and for the brief amount of time your exposed to it it wont harm you. Just sweep it up or vacuum it up, if you vacuum it up just change the bag, open up a window and don't worry about it. Sheesh.

  • @needmorediesel

You obviously need to look into mercury dangers.

And you should worry about your exposure to mercury.

  • @ExoticCalli - You inhale more mercury from coal fired power plants than you ever will from a broken CFL.

  • This is a goofy video, he must think he'll live forever without mercury

  • That sucks, paying so much!

But CFLs are very good news, they are way more efficient than "classic" light bulbs, which means you save so much electricity, on a worldwide scale.

Recycling them is a BIG issue, but then again, has anyone ever recycled normal light bulbs????

I would be more worried about the mercury in your fillings and your vaccins (which are in your body) then the possibilty of breaking a CFL.

And remember, mercury isn't man made, it's in the nature!

  • Stock up on incandescent bulbs while they are available!

  • OLD ASS NEWS I droped one and look am still hear ! Sure there not green and fuck going green but god dam.

  • The EPA and the government don't care about us .. They put the Fluoride in the water supply just like the Nazi's did in death camps. They are the same people who put Lead in Gasoline, The same people who used the Asbestos in buildings. People really need to wake up! The governments of our world are already bought and payed for. We are all slaves under their control. Open your eyes! --> Infowars dot com

  • just dont drop them LOL

  • It should be clear by now that the elite are trying to kill us, everyway possible.

  • The FUCKING SCARY thing is that this is a Global Movement by Governments + the UN and EU...

Edison's will be banned GLOBALLY(all countries of manufacture) By 2012-2016

If that ain't some NWO shit, I don't know what is...

  • Give me a break! soon your gonna want to start recycling tuna, swordfish, shellfish and high fructose corn syrup and eventually close down sushi joints for mercury! its simple.....you think cfl is the devil while someone else believes the cfl will save energy that will eventually pay off in an environmental way by using less fuel which is a bigger problem than mercury! all in all us americans have built this nation on the peoples choice. either do or dont but the option is always their. AMERICA!

  • @xsivelove The energy you save...

It pales in comparison compared to the energy it takes to manufacture the incandescent bulbs.

Mercury and Fluoride compounds in MY HOME?!?! FUCK OFF...

  • @xsivelove Fluorescent bulbs are ÜBER-TOXIC...

And they take more energy to manufacture than any Incandescent bulb will ever use...

That's what I meant to say.

Not to mention the negative health effects that flickering narrow spectrum lighting(CFL's "daylight", Oh What A LIE) have.

I can tell you as a photographer, The light quality of CFL's is PISS-POOR.

It's wholly un-natural to the human eye and brain.

  • if u break a CFL, the epa charges u a huge chunk of money to get ur house cleaned up from the toxic mercury. On top of that, CFLs give off horrible lighting. I would rather go back to using candles than to use toxic CFLs. All this green talk is a complete scam. they want to ban edison bulbs so that these greenies can have more money in their pocket. I will continue to stock up on edison bulbs.

  • Not to mention the Edison lightbulb is just as if not more dangerous then a cfl lamp. Especially when you consider they are entirely heat driven and cause fires.

  • @luckinabox if CFLs break, they're more likely to cause toxic mercury in the air of ur home, than an incandescent causing fire. On top of that, it will cause u over $2,000.00 to get the ppl to clean up ur house if a CFL breaks. To top it off, if CFLs are as good as ppl say it is, let consumers decide that. government wants to FORCE people to use cfls because they know that most ppl, like me, still prefer incandescents. Not to mention that CFLs give off shitty light

  • If you were to pick up the pieces of a CFL with your barehand and not ventilate the room you would be exposed to the amount of mercury in a can of tuna. The reason the EPA and the government are all worried is they don't want it to accumulate which would cause a problem. Don't worry buddy.

  • There is another option and that is LED light bulbs. I have them in my house and they don't contain mercury and they are very energy efficient. I recommend LED light bulbs if you want to save money and LED lighting is the future as well!

  • hey somebody can tell me about liquid mercury, when i was around 10 i used to play with liquid mercury, now im 26 and i iahve a son, i had some blood test but there is nothing, oh and yes in my whole life i had broke around 5 or 6 cfl bulbs, so just wodenring how much of this mercury could give u cancer?

  • MERCURY THIS, GASES THAT!! WE ARE NOW BREATHING THE REMNANTS OF ATOMS BOMBS THAT HAVE BEEN DROPPED!! I SAY LETS LIGHT UP THAT JOINT, ALL WE GOT IS JUST ONE LIFE!

  • well i see ur point but im not scared of a little mercury.. i eat tuna fish every week thats got a lot of mercury in it to.... i surely wouldnt roll around in broken cfl dust but... i really doubt anything would have happened to the kid if the mom just used some tape to remove it outtta the carpet

  • i see your point i bet people throw them away a fair amount. its kind of a small inviromental issue over all at the moment with all other kinds of pollution but if everyone starts using them and not recycling them it surely could be an issue..

  • Your dumb... dont break lightbubs... plain and simple... stop being a homo... it does not suit you... take the cock out of your mouth... your mom will like you more and you'll make your dad proud again

  • ive broken many lightbulbs in my room, and i threw them al away in the trash, oh well i didnt know

  • shut up homo

  • these bulbs last 10,000 years an shit i got spirls from when they first came out still workin

  • What happens in 5 to 7 years when millions of CF bulbs die and are dumped? It doesn't matter how little mercury is in each bulb, it matters that there will be millions leeching mercury into the ground water that eventually you will drink at some point. Florescent is not green!!!!

  • @drewkeener Uhhh.... take them to where they are disposed of properly, DUH!

I've taken the few CFLs that have burned out to a place where the mercury is dealt with properly, everyone who uses CFLs should do the same. I think Home Depot takes them, I took mine to a place called Rinchem.

BTW, even if you throw CFLs in the trash there is a net reduction in the amount of mercury released into the environment because the amount of mercury released from coal power plants release is reduced w/CFLs

  • @idontcare80 In a perfect world everyone would take there CFLs to the proper disposal plant! Tons of those bulbs will be put in the weekly garbage pick-up because it's so much easier. Even if you are reducing power plant mercury output, you're just replacing it with another form of it. L.E.D. technology is the true future of green. An L.E.D. bulb will burn for 25 years.

  • @drewkeener LED lights are not nice enough to be suitable for home lighting. LEDs are good on headlights or maybe even flash lights. in the US, not all incandescents are being phased out. incandescents that are below 40 watts, above 100 watts, flood light versions, appliance lights, colored bulbs and rough surfing incandescents are not included in the ban. they also have Halogen bulbs (energy efficient incandescents) already in the market. LEDs are not just the future lighting. learn ur facts.

  • @noreaga12326 I am using 6 led flood lights in recessed fixtures in my house right now. The bulbs contain 100 leds and put out a bright white 75 w (maybe you should learn your facts). With a filter cap the bulbs look like any other light. The most efficient bulb will emit bright light, consume very little electricity, and last for 25 years and that is LED technology. CF and halogen are old technology and will soon be buried with the dinosaurs.

  • @drewkeener Halogen bulbs are fairly new and MOST ppl enjoy the same warm light they get from them just like from incandescents. In case u didnt know, they got halogen bulbs that are as much as 70% energy efficient now and they're still continuing to build more efficiency into them. do some research moron. also, cfls will probably be buried cuz not many ppl like them. LEDs will never have the nice light quality that incandescents have. looks to me like ur not proud of ur house. what a shame

  • @drewkeener Also, incandescents are not being phased out 100%. light bulbs that are under 40 watts, over 100 watts, colored light bulbs, flood light versions, appliance lighting and rough surface incandescent bulbs are not included in the ban. my friends uncle is one of the big bosses of sylvania and he informed me that incandescents in the US, with energy efficiency are staying (Halogen Bulbs) And I already have halogen bulbs that use less energy than standard bulbs. Looks like u lose again

  • @drewkeener

What will happen is a substantial reduction in environmental mercury.

The amount of Mercury contained in a CFL is about 4mg

On the other hand The Mercury foot print of a 100 watt incandescent bulb is about 160mg

So as you can see compared to CFL's Incandescent bulbs are responsible for substantially more mercury being released into our atmosphere. The amount of mercury released from US power plants just to power Incandescent bulbs in US homes is about 600 metric tons a year.

  • @Blaze1024 CFLs dont have a lot of mercury in them but lets face it, most people are not going to recylce them properly when done with them. So that "little mercury" eventually will add up causing a huge mess in our landfills. Even these moron tree huggers warn people to properly dispose them when done. CFLs are expensive, they dont last any longer than an incandescent and their light quality looks like shit. You tree huggers are paranoid and wana control the lives of other ppl

  • @noreaga12326 All this concern over the Mercury in CFL's is nothing more then manufactured TeaPublican hysteria. The standard 4 foot fluorescent tube that's installed in 100's of millions of home kitchens contains over 12mg of Mercury each which is over 120% more than a CFL. These 4 foot fluorescent have been in use since the 1930's and early models contained twice as much mercury as current tubes Yet there's never been any public hysteria over the mercury contained in those bulbs.

  • @noreaga12326 "So that "little mercury" eventually will add up causing a huge mess in our landfills."

The average home has at least 8 "4 foot fluorescents" 4 in the kitchen + 4 in the garage. Each one of those tubes contain 120% more mercury then a CFL. There are also 100's of millions of additional 4 foot and 8 foot fluorescent in use in offices and stores. Billions of these Fluorescent tubes have been dumped into our landfills over the last 70 YEARS.! and now your concerned..!

  • @noreaga12326

The fact is GE invented the CFL but due to a lack of insight failed to patent the design. The Chinese took advantage of GE's failure to patent the bulb and began manufacturing them. This devastated the US lighting industry's profits. In response they manufactured the CFL Hysteria and teapublicans are buying it hook line and sinker. You can bet that if GE had patented the CFL and was selling them Tea baggers would be praising them as the next best thing to sliced bread

  • @drewkeener Your comment's and opinions on CFLS's are a perfect example of what happens when ignorant consumers become victims and pawns of corporate political manipulation.

Fact, Florescent tubes which contain over 120% MORE mercury then CFL's have been in wide spread use in the USA for over 70 years.! Since the 1930's billions of fluorescent tubes containing as much as 25+mgs of mercury each have been dumped into our landfills and all of a sudden now you're concerned puleasee.!

  • @Blaze1024 Actually I have been concerned for a long time. I'm concerned with everyone getting cancer including myself. I'm concerned with the alarming increase of early dementia and Alzheimer's disease. All of these disorders can be linked to heavy metal poisoning. I don't buy CFLs and I'm not impressed with your vast knowledge of them. Get off your high horse and realize that you are an ignorant pawn like the rest of us.

  • @drewkeener Oh pulease The amount of mercury contained in a CFL is minuscule compared to other sources you are exposed to every day. 600 million metric tons of mercury is released into the atmosphere every year from coal burning power plants. That's the equivalent of breaking 6 billion CFL's each and every year. Worrying about CFl's while coal fired power plants are pumping mercury into the air we breath is like worrying about a hang nail after being shot in the gut by a shot gun.

  • they have such a small amount it dont matter, there is mercury in your kids shots they get and they cant go to school without them MMR, and even in flu shots. I have broken many tube an CFL bulbs. If I die well, you can have my SSI, lol But come on, ive seen people playing with it on youtube , in their hands.,,.. they seem fine.

  • sack up and clean up the bulb man. the fish you eat contain more mercury then those light bulbs, Evrything you enconter on a daily basis could be considered posion. I've broke hundreds of floros during demolition jobs I'm still kickin and no extra toes. Grow some balls man.

  • The biggest problem with these things is they are used in homes which is usually at night when there is excess electricity being generated going straight to ground. You aren't even helping the co2 footprint, but since they are shipped from china, you are actually INCREASING your footprint.

    Brilliant.

  • Mercury content in lamps is no new thing. CFL's are very similar in technology and mercury content to your standard linear (tube) fluorescent lamps which are in extremely popular use everywhere from office buildings, supermarkets and even hospitals.

I have not seen any huge media attention directed to the use of standard fluorescent lamps, and they are used everywhere! So if the problem is that serious? Why is it never brought up for standard fluorescent lamps which have been around for AGES?

  • crypyicalpha: I dunno, you tell me why a single mother would be charged alot of money by the EPA because she broke a CFL???

  • @crypticalpha

simply because people are not informed about how dangerous they are

  • @crypticalpha u cant compare a CFL to the flourecent bulbs we've been using for decades. their lighting quality is different. i think ur in denial cuz it kills u that most ppl like me hate cfls.

  • in fact GE is supposed to have a lamp called HEI ("high efficiency incandescent") on the market NOW, but have been stopped by the enviro-idiots and Philips Electronics, who wants to push even more awful (but not a real fire hazard YET) LED bulbs at 50-100 bucks each, that DIM OUT in 1-6 months! So you start ar a meager 15-22 LPW, and it declines to about 1-3 LPW in a few months! SMART! And LED's contain all the bad chemicals in the base and the LED's just mentioned! LOLOL! WAKE UP!!!

  • I have evaluated and used more light bulbs in the past 5 years than you will use in 3 lifetimes, and CFL's, unless simple reactor ballasted and preheat type (a technology unbeaten sinmce 1938!), I REFUSE to use this junk! If you want to use them pay up your fire insurance, down the road you WILL need it when you leave one on unattended in a closet, basement, or in a lamp for night time security! LEd is junk too--all hyped up-in fact LED's can't achive much more lumens per watt (LPW) tahan inc's!

  • @ricksbulbs you dont know shit on LED'S your full of shit so shut up !

  • These things are so bad I WILL remove EVERY ONE in use at our facioity and w either use incandescents made to last longer with diodes, or install the good old fashioned and proven 22 watt circline adaptors which use a MAGNETIC REACTOR ballast that is about 10 times less "lossy" and therefore 10 times more efficiwnt than these Chinese Fire-Bombs! And when these lamps overheat, not only do they emit chemicals and catch fire, but they lose LOTS of efficiency! now tell me I don't know bulbs!

  • I collect all types of bulbs---been doing this since I was 4. I am now a lighting historian for a soon to be big museum in Schenectady, NY. Fact is--more than mercury, is the big fiere hazard these abominations cause. I know first hand-darn near burned my house and shop out back down at least 3 times! As for emiting gases when hot its true--arsenic, cadmium, volatile organic compounds, phenol--they never talk about what's in the BASE of these things, and this is what is the real hazard! WAKE UP

  • STICKEDU... if u feel comfortable with the government running ur life about what to buy, then knock urself out but that doesnt mean that we all should. buying new light bulbs is not the answer to save the planet u moron. and these CFL's DO contain mercury which can be deadly and on top of that, they give off horrible light. b4 u make moronic comments, educate urself a bit more about it so u dont look any stupider than u already do.

  • stickedU... again, ur a moron for wanting the government to tell u what u should buy. if u wana buy cfl light bulbs, its ur business but why would u feel happy about the government telling u what u can buy and not buy. u may not like the old light bulbs but think about it, if hes telling u that u cant buy old light bulbs any more just cuz THEY don't like it then imagine what else they mite take off the market,,, just cuz THEY dont like it. here in NY there only banning the 20 and 40 watts

  • STICKEDU... gota say once more that ur a moron only because U dont know ur facts. old light bulbs WILL NOT be ilegal here in NEW YORK. in fact they're actually making newer incendacents with the same color light, only thing is that they have to be more energy efficient. U must want the government telling u what underwear u should be wearing.. cuz HE thinks its the rite kind. so i guess if he tells u to wear pink underwear, then u'l just be a fag for the rest of ur life.

  • I dont want to hear about your pink underwear you freak. Look you right wing moron, efficiency laws have to be enacted because of people like you sucking the earth's resources dry. Every other country is doing it, we are way behind. The U.S needs to learn to be better stewards of the earth and share its wealth too and resources..By the way this is a Federal Ban signed by Bush in 2007 (Dec) do your homework, it starts with the 100watt then finishes the 40watt by 2014 so suck on that .

  • how many moronic comments are u going to make?? this is not just about saving the planet.. its about the federal government telling us the type of life style we should have. i see nothing wrong with saving the planet but at the same time, as US citizens, its OUR right to buy whatever we wana buy instead of having some pin head telling us what we should buy. i know bush signed that bill just like all the other careless mistakes hes made which is why many ppl quit on him......

  • again i say... if u wana be the governments bitch and do what THEY tell u what u should do, then u shouldnt be in this country and enjoy no kinda of freedom. so yea, stick with UR pink underwear cuz bush said he wants u to wear it.. or.. mayb we should tell the government to ban meat from the stores cuz it causes heart disease.... etc etc unless u got something intelligent to comment back, dont respond. ur too blind and moronic to see that congress wants u to buy what they want u to buy.

  • They aren't saving any co2, you need to understand that. They are used by consumers at night time when excess electricity is being generated and can't be slowed down so it all goes to ground. Any electricity you save after 5 and before 8am goes straight to ground. All that for nothing.

  • you are sinking in an water glass.

cfl and all fluorescent bulb contains mercury to work (4mg), but coal contains mercury too.

So, it's better to have 4mg in an bulb or burn more than 4mg of mercury directly in air?

to all: cfl aren't the evil, they are lamps!

p.s. why noone is telling about mercury contaminated fish of asia, mercury that is present on old thermometer and mercury that is in use for industrial processes?

  • They also do not work with dimmer switch.

  • this is why people make fun of americans...

    its a light bulb...

no way it caused that much of an increase in mercury...its probably a build up of over time or the company charging for the time wasted on BS like this.

mold companys do the same thing...just a way to make a buck...

if you shield yourself from problems like these...ie- cig smoke, UV rays, etc your gonna get sicker, your body has no way to defend itself...everyones gonna die some day so why trip over something this gay?

  • its haz cat.... my dad works for them he writes all there software..

  • I'm sticking with incandescent until something better becomes mainstream.

CFL is shit... for many reasons.

CCFL is also mercury but they're strong as hell, used safely as the backlights in every non-LED backlit LCD.

LED is the most efficient and safest, but expensive as hell.

I live in Canada, when it's cold the heat from incandescent helps warm my house... wasted energy, ha.

  • I hope people will stop using CFLs.

It has murcury, it emits RF, it intruduce electronic noise into your electric wires and it can couse skin problems.

  • you are 100% right!

  • Long term exposure might induce sterility

and be some looney nerds way to reduce the worlds population methinks

  • Surely skin cancer would only occur if you had extensive exposure to the mercury in thses CFL's, if I broke one I wouldn't be too concerned, in any case they are alright if you have a decent shade as the brilliant white tone of lights emitted from them does not show, but what I don't get is why the EU is so concerned about phasing out Frosted Candle Lights as to be done next month?

  • lightningT5:

The fact that if one breaks we can clean it up without harm is irrelevant.

If you break one, and dont notify the EPA, you are violating federal Laws...you wouldnt break federal laws would you?

  • No because I do not live in the USA, and as far as I'm aware in the British Isles we have no laws like that, but good point you make through

  • @Lewismadmax Then why don't the EPA's own official instructions for a broken CFL not include notifying the federal EPA?

  • @Lewismadmax Also, this has been covered by Snopes too.

  • OH! Because they have to incinerate them!? Wow that's good the the air. BRAVO! My god peoples just don't get that the way to save energy is to stick with your incandescent and halogen light bulbs and put them all as much as possible on dimmer switch and/or convert your table tamps with those 3-way sockets or dimmable swithches that you can buy separately at most of home centers and install them on most lamps. Once you can dim your bulbs they will last MUCH longer.

  • They don't incinerate CFLs!

  • Mercury poisoning, skin cancer, sever itchy scalp, sensitivity to the UV coming from them for many people and not enough scientific medical evidence as to how all energy saving light bulbs will effect everyone's health with long term use in their environment.. The only concerns are that governments are cutting down their national energy consumption

  • Yall r fuckin idiots u aren't gonna die from breathing a tiny bit of that gas I've vids of people in Thailand licking the insides of the tubes after breaking them and they didn't die all the sudden

  • CHEVELLE712K6:

Good for your mentally retarded friends, my point is the legallity of breaking a lightbulb in america, not licking one in thailand. Cant wait to see what your friends children look like, I hear 3 eyes are sexy now.

We have laws here and we obey them, just because you dont, doesnt mean we want to be retarded like you!

  • Ok bitch if u can read look and see I said nothing about my friends I said YouTube videos u fuck! I hope someone shoves a light bulb down ur throat u red neck conspiracy piece of shit!

  • Sure you haven't been licking the insides of a CFL yourself?

  • I was using CFL designated as task light. I read regular ones don't last as long if not used upright. So you'd think this bulb was definitely good for use in close proximity. I do like the light, but figured out this thing was off-gassing something that gave me a terrible headache. This is after 6 months of use. Maybe it's something in the plastic base, heat is releasing cancer causing molecule. Only alternative is the expensive LEDs. This YT shows: Health Effects - Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

  • when the fuck are people going to learn that government isnt the solution - but the problem?

people keep voting for these self righteous al gore types who want to mandate and regulate "CARBON FOOTPRINTS" and anything else they can think of - how can anyone be surprised this woman found herself in the situation she's in?

    get a fucking clue america.

    get.

    a fucking.

    clue.

  • FUCK ... i am gonna die in a couple years... cause i was putting a cover on my lights and broke it .. and i breathed in funny smelling air.. mustve been mercury .. WOOHOO!! and i still have it sitting my in garbage can.. in my room... it was a tiny 15W one.. yay cancer!

  • I had a 105 watt cfl that I dropped in my room and shattered. The first thing I did was hold my breath, open my window and close the door for 45 mins. Afterwards pointing a fan out the window on full then cleaning up the glass. I hope I'm ok??!!geezee

  • OH NO dont do that, u will kill the birds and the bees in the trees outside with the mercury. that is very green and DOES save our environment doesnt it

  • Buy LED bulbs, LED spotlights, LED cabinet lights. They last pretty long. Get tubular skylights. They emit more light than ordinary bulbs. Tubular skylights can help with depression and probably helps with other kinds of mood disorders.

  • yea, some LEDs last for 20 years! They also take less current and don't break.

  • Couple of things, it's the incandecent lamps they want to ban, not the edison screw which is the fitting type. . . and stop calling them bulbs, they are lamps, bulbs go in the ground to grow flowers.

  • Ok so she's a complete imbecile for calling the gov after breaking a bulb. And you are right behind her. Way to go!

  • That's ok. We'll all save power so giving children brain damage is ok. Since the government knows what's best, no one needs their brain anymore anyways. We have to save the world from Global Warming, no matter the cost.

Seriously though, the next time I see a kiosk handing out free CFL bulbs, I'm going apeshit on them.

  • Hg poisoning cant be all that much more worse than eating a shitload of fish

  • A way that is proper to dispose of these types of lightbulbs is sealing them in 2 plastic bags, dont break it.., and then you can put it in your normal trash.. i believe...

  • this man is right, we need to find a better light bulb than Edison invented, or else, forget this dangerous light bulb

  • Its like those tree huggers buring the forest just so they dont get cut down. Or when they are against abortion and kill/bomb an abortion clinic doctor. Off subject but I agree with ya.

  • Has far has I know the LED type of light is a lot safer and uses even less power, they are selling them in more and more place's.Just and ideal. Thanks Tec

  • I realize that the amount of mercury levels in one bulb is very low. However, when you consider millions of homes that now have these bulbs, and that not everyone will recycle them, and throw them away. That adds up to a lot of mercury in our landfills. I was guilty of this myself. Not anymore.

  • anyone notice how glazed this guys eyes r before you nvm. seriously take the time think, and immediately call bullshit on it.

    embrace the darkness!^^^^666

  • thats fucked up. I did not know that.

  • He's RIGHT! The small amount from the vapors is extremely TOXIC! Enough to cause serious health problems for a child. But do flush the metal you can trap and ventilate the house thoroughly. And that professor is a fool.

  • If you break a CFL in your home - ventilate the area and try not to breath in the vapor. Within a few hours the levels will be safe again. Chill out - nobody's trying to poison you.

  • give me a break ...if you drop a cfl light bulb all you need to do is clean it up put it a plastic bag and bring it to your local dump or recycling center. Who the heck would use a vaccum to clean up glass?

  • mercury in a cfl bulb + mercury from coal burned to power it: 6-8 mg

mercury released from burning coal to power an incandescent bulb: 10-11 mg

also, friggin freaky new age hippies don't know that calling hazmat over 4-5 mg of mercury is WAY over reacting. My chemistry professor has been working with it for 40 years, minimal safety precautions, and still has undetecable levels in his blood.

CONDENSED VERSION FOR THE IMPATIENT: just open a window, sweep up the mercury, you will be fine.

  • Wow! Are these the dark ages or what? This is the first time I hear of this hazard, and I study at the university for crying out loud! This is becoming an ever increasing complex world we are living in. As information levels increase, important information seems left out. Who is in charge?!!!? We put warning signs on cofee cups "can be hot"-Duh! Yet warning against mercury in light-bulbs go unnoticed. It seems everyone needs a phd in environmental chemistry to live a normal life these days :-s

  • Don't forget using an incandecent bulb burns alot more coal over its lifetime which puts 8 times more mercury directly in the atmosphere than a cfl ,also they rarely break and almost all communities have a place to bring hazardous waste! leds are great to use as well! overall cfls are far better for the environment than incandecents! and that is a fact!!!!

  • What does an "environmental waco" look like? Anyone who uses this term, must be questioned as far as following them.

  • the cops haven't got me yet for throwing it away in the garbage! lol

  • And not only CFLs are dangerous when they brake. But you CANNOT use them with home automation systems, digital or any dimmer control and/or remote control ceiling fans. They are NOT compatible and will explode causing damage to the CPU of the unit which made the CFL explode in the first place. I wanted to use CFL thru out my homes but I was advice against it repeatly by the manufacturers of my products. They metioned the use of CFLs on their products will void their warranty.

  • Regular fluorescent shoplight bulbs have mercury in them, too. Not just the CFL bulbs.

  • Not to mention the old mercury vapor lights used in the old exterior lights and street lights.

  • I know. But those long "Star Wars" light sabers do not fit on any home application like table lamps, ceiling fan or difficult to installa sockets like CFLs. So I don't know what's your point....

  • only use LED bulbs

  • yep there good

  • And I hope you don't have any fillings in your teeth... they are a mixture of silver and mercury!

  • You are overreacting. ALL florescent bulbs have mercury in them (a much larger amount than CF bulbs). Here is another surprise for you, the generation of electricity using coal (the overwhelming majority of power plants) emits TONS of mercury into the air which you end up eating in your food (especially that healthful fish). During the life of a CF bulb, many times LESS mercury enters the environment than from the use of common tungsten filament bulbs, even including the that in the CF bulb.

  • Bottom line. It's a free country. Don't tell me what kind of bulb I can use. I don't like them. The light from them is yellow and sucks. They take a while to warm up. They don't last as long as stated unless you leave them on. No where in the constitution does it say congress has the right to tell me how to illuminate my home! It's ridiculous!

  • ALL flourescents have a tiny drop of mercury - only difference in the CF from a standard flourescent tube is that these are miniaturized to include the starter & ballast in the base. No more of a hazard than the flourescent bulbs you've had around you for decades, actually less since these are smaller than 48" tubes & actually harder to break than the tubes by virtue of being spiraled. This urban legend BS about hazmat teams and all is likely generated by incandescant makers & power companies.

  • "No more of a hazard than the flourescent bulbs you've had around you for decades, actually less since these are smaller than 48" tubes & actually harder to break than the tubes by virtue of being spiraled."

Good point. Those 48" sons of bitches go to the trash all the time.

  • He also worked on free and wireless energy, which is now known as ecoupler type technology, a 1972 NASA video they successfully tested such wireless power technology at long distance to power lightbulbs.

1975 NASA JPL Goldstone Demo of Wireless Power Transmission

Liftport Energy 2.0 : Wireless Power Transmission test 1974

Also existing powerlines used to transmit high speed broadband data via existing standard household outlets.

  • and generators still running to this day in some very unique buildings.

  • Thanks for sharing your experience, it is a very important safety note to becareful when handling these things and around especially children, children break things and things do happen. with high prices and the way economy anything that takes some of the strain off the wallet or resource bills helps, these bulbs were used to years and still running in some really old train stations, and tesla's bulbs that haven't burned out yet

  • Home air heater conditioner thermostats or stators are filled with mercury, it's in the control part in the sliders of your temperature control contained in glass or plastic mini container, as time goes on plastic and old glass breaks down, and there's risk everytime you adjust your AC of breaking and releasing it onto your hand feet and floor where the control is.

  • General Electric:

$10.58 6 Bulb Pack 13 Watts Each Compared Against 60 Watt.

Energy Saver Bulbs do put out more light than standard bulb of same rating a bit so they're a bit brighter, that's why instead of using a 75 Watt bulb can use a 60 watt compared version instead. I take an old burned out bulb and put it in place of 1 socket in a 2 light fixture and put another energy saving bulb in other socket.

  • 21 bulbs.

    75 Watts * 21 = 1575 Watts

    60 Watts * 21 = 1260 Watts

    40 Watts * 21 = 800 Watts

    If you have a security/floodlights 260 Watts.

    After Energy Saver bulb Conversion:

    11 Bulbs in use now.

    13 Watts * 11 = 143 Watts.

    Floodlight 23 to 26 Watts.

  • Yeah when I was young my bestfriend bounced through his basketball up into light fixture, it broke and glass powder and debris came down and got into his eye, which things like that happen in accidents, so have to be really careful with anything. Hate to think what had happened if it was mecury filled back then.

  • Few things that need to be said....

    1. as mentioned the amount of mercury in a CFL lightbulb is equilvalent to the amount we find in a fish.

    2. the burning of coal emits mercury, in fact many fish are contaminated by mercury because of coal power plants. CFL's require less energy which means less coal is being burnt.

  • God, just a little bit scary!

  • I invite everyone to read this article on Incandescent BAN x CFL, its a bit technical at some parts, but its very enlightening:

(Youtube blocks URLs, so copy the "URL" below and replace the + signs with dots)

    sound+westhost+com/articles/incandescent+htm#in2

  • Also there are numerous applications where compact fluorescent lamps cannot be used(ovens, refrigerators, enclosed fixtures, fixtures in wide ambient temperature range areas, outdoor fixtures in winter, frequently switched fixtures, fixtures controlled by devices requiring a resistive load[dimmers, many photocontrol devices, X10 remote switches], flashing applications, etc).

  • when they burn out i put them back in the original case so they dont break before taking them to be recycled

they contain 1 percent of what old thermetors have

  • 5mg isnt alot if you eat 1 whole salmon contained that much, i only use them in my cieling lights for this reason so i only go up there to change them.

however remember when murcury was sued for fillings for teeth well yea they use about 10 or less mgs.

  • 5 stars buddy!! Ya, i bought one to test it out, and not only that it's hazardous, but it also gives off a very inferiour light quality. I'm stocking up on the real bulbs, so when the communists outlaw the real bulbs, i'll be ready. i'd rather pay a few extra bucks a year.

also, with the new compact fluorescent bulbs, you can't use them outside, and when the top of the plastic part turns brown, it will eventually start a fire.

  • but I have a problem.... I live in Canada, and knowing what our government is like, they're most likely gonna send some guys door to door searching for the old bulbs, and giving people huge fines for using them. i can honestly see the canadian government fining nice old ladies who barely make a living thousands of dollars.

  • Try LED's.There more money but will last longer and do not contain mercury. They save even more energy the CFL's.

  • I have a toe growing in my lap. It's called a penis. You should see it some time!

  • Yah the chinese ones need to be outlawed as they

just do not last as long and they run way to hot a properly operating cfl should only be warm not hot.

  • It's 4 milligrams pretty much harmless the old school mercury thermometers have thousands of times as much.

Though on many of them being made in china yes this is a travesty as when you get one not made in china the do last for years.

If you can find the lights of America brand CFLs these are made in the US and don't die after six months.

  • A whole a generation of the earth's children have been poised by mercury containing vaccines and the CDC & the FDA have gone out of their way to cover it up. Injected mercury into your veins is the most dangerous and toxic, especially if you are a baby and have no Blood Brain Barrier (which means toxins to strait to your brain where it stays for the rest of your life.

  • Plus they give off really crappy bright light.

  • A typical CFL contains 4 miligrams of mercury, yes they do need to be disposed properly. However, a coal fire power plant emits 10 mg of mercury to produce the electricity to run an incandescent bulb over its lifetime; the number is only 2.4 mg for a CFL. Overall, CFLs actually can keep more mercury out of the air you breathe and the water you drink than a typical light bulb.

  • what about people who use hyro-electricity? does that release mercury?

  • Nope. And a wind electricity or nuclear?

No mercury. That CFL and banning the incandesent thing is just a big bubble with nothing inside. (How the hell do i fit CFL into my hall lamp? /falls downwards with the glass dome/)

  • that's y they say don't throw them away. It's because the mercury will seep into the water table and b carried to the nearest river where a lot of towns get their drinking water from as well as people eating the fish which can not process the mercury and it stays in them and u or something eventually eat it.

  • Then if you're that stupid n the 1st place, mayB u're better off dead. The biggest threat is getting the mercury in the water. Where it will dilute and poison thousands of gallons of water with just 1 bulb... Continued...

  • The minute amount of mercury vapor in the lights are not enough to cause that much damage unless you break it in a bag and then stick your head in it... continued...

  • I don't believe this. I think this has been blown WAY out of perspective. Yes Mercury is some really nasty stuff but COME ON! florescent lights have been around for decades and you don't see a bunch of people running around with toes growing out of their foreheads because a bulb got broke! Thousands and thousands of these get broke everyday and not once has it ever hit the news... continued...

  • Present day CFL's contain about 2 miligrams of HG in vapour form. A standard 3-foot fluroescent contains about 5 miligrams. Fluroescent lamps have been around since the 1930's and have always used mercury as a component of their manufacture but it is still a small amount and can be cleaned up with a wet paper towel. Most older home thermostats contain a mercury switch with 1000X more HG than a CFL. EPA rules are overkill.

  • Wow! Let's hope they get LEDs going before everyone has a real mess. Are the tube flourescents that are in schools and every where else just as bad?
