The first time I flew anywhere on my own I was a 21 year old nervous flyer. The route PER - LHR via SIN, the aircraft a747 - 400. I remember cruising and finding the rumble of the engines comforting. Then I found this. That symphony at take off punches deep into the soul, evoking images of the glamour that flying once was. The burble or those engines would gently send me off to sleep, on that fantastic long journey to the motherland.
My Dad left West-Berlin in 1954 from Tempelhof-AP on board of a PAN AM-Connie sitting at wing position like the video shows. Engine #2 caught fire at full throttle therefore take off was aborted but nobody got nervous or even scared. The batch was extinguished quickly and after a repair break of only three hours she worked properly again and went back to air. Fine machine!
you wanna talk about raw power....wowww those bad boys out there on the wing just pumping it out.... awsome.. the closest I ever came to that was a c130 ride from okie to the phillipines...that was kool too tho....
Reminds me of the B17 ride my youngest brother bought my middle brother and I for working on his house. I was on the first of the two flights and got to experience the engine start!!! Given the history of this air craft, and how tough they are I never felt as safe in an aircraft as this one. Also, if anyone has ever said "it was so noisy I couldn't hear myself yell", that is how noisy a B17 is inside.
Spent many hours in the Canadian Argus sub-hunter aircraft behind 4 Wright 3350 radials... like they say; flyint behind those round engines was really flying! -groaning and clanking and farting and smoking on start-up... not like the lady-like poof and whine of a turbine, and the 30+ hour endurance of the Argus was limited by the 60-gallon oil tank, not by the fuel tank!
Wow - this flight took you pretty much right over Botany, and I see the Randwick Racecourse as you bank to the south. Great video. I was in Sydney just a few months prior to this. Cheers.
can this girl fly from LA to NYC non stop.. and what is that bud with connie written on it on the wing tip.. i noticed on other constellations some dont have them..
I think the Connie would perform better with 4 bladed props. Still though, she is an awesome aircraft and next to the DC-7C, she's the fastest and most beautiful propliner to fly.
In 1959, I flew on this bird ( I was 8 yrs. ) from LA to the Islands for Dads Air Force job and man, was I overcome with airplanes at that point of my life.
@brucek68 May GOD bless you bruce. my grandfather built these, my great uncle flew them, although me and ms connie never got to ride together, ive gotten to ride in a dc3, a b17, and maybe one day a connie. AND ive found ( thanks to you) the perfect alarm clock, thanks to you, my pc, and 1100 watts of amplifier
@PappyTF My first experience was when I flew on a BA Boeing 757 and was hooked from then on. I was eleven and at twelve, I wanted to be a pilot, but never had the ability. You are so lucky.
Oh my, is she ever graceful... I've never flown on a radial-powered airliner, but the Connie is just so stylish and distinctive. I love how gracefully she eases into the air with those big wings.
I've flown on the "Save-A-Connie" Super "H" Constellation three times between Kansas City and Chicago back in the 1990's. All your sound effects here bring back memories of those precious flying memories!
This takes me back. At age 7 in 1957, I was featured in the London Times with my sister for traveling over 200,000 miles in Connies from the 049 to the 749. It was a promo shot set up by my Dad , who ran TWA in London from 1953-1959. I had unlimited free trans. on TWA until 1972. The 707 was great but there is nothing like a Connie. My favorite wasn't the 1049 it was the smaller older 049.749 series were you really got to know the people on board. My longest flight was from LON to LAX .
The sound of those R-3350 Cyclones is priceless, the B-29 Superfortress got to live on in the connie, my farther flew the constellations for TWA after flying B-17s after the war, he loved the connie, Thanks.
hey thanks for the ride in the old connie; I remember the takeoff sound well and coming back to METO power in the inital climb. Ah, the old days..................
Hats off to the boys at Lockheed for giving us the Connie- she's one of the most powerful, yet elegant, planes of her generation, I only wish I'd been around in the days when she was the princess of the air-
What an amazing noise! Turboprops just sound so much more pathetic in power compared to these babies, not to mention planes like the Connie, DC-6, and DC-7 are MUCH larger than pretty any turboprop currently in commercial airline service today. Sadly, because of jets most propliners are much smaller. Can't believe you actually got the opportunity to fly a Connie! Love the flames.
Nice way to compare the different types of engines. Radial engines are like steam powered locomotives. They almost have a soul. Living and breathing, mechanical parts, moving in all kinds of different directions, trying to tear themselves apart. High-strung and tempermental, needing constant attention. In return, enable you to go places where you have never been able to go before...
*smile*... both aircraft enjoyed their own charisma; the Connies, DC-6 and like ilk were at the top of the food chain for their genre'; spacious, comfortable and a feel all their own, but those early, unmuffled 707's with the water injection shook the earth and unquestionably made music like nothing else since. Each aircraft embodied it's own claim to aviation romance. I transited the "DC-3" generation into the "jet set", revering both respective eras held fondest nostalgia
VERY VERY lucky!!! Right place right time. A colleague that i work for is connected with its operation. it was passing thru Syd and the opportunity became available to catch a ride back to Woolongong. Best flight yet by far.
You know, as odd as this may sound, the only time I have *ever* been able to sleep on a plane, was during a hop from VanNuys to LAX and back on a super-connie during the VanNuys air show. Something about the chatter of a big radial just puts me out like a light.
the flames out of the exhaust ports are normal; those wright 3350 engines sound great...at night, you could read a newspaper in the cabin with those flames; what an outstanding restoration
nice video brucek68, thanks to your video, I have had the opertunity to see from the inside what it must have been like to travel on Connie. My mom and dad flew one from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 1955.
Neat brings back some memories of leaving Logan Airport in 1954 for England at the tender age of 4. The flames were the most memorable i thought the plane was on fire.
P.S. What is the whistling sound just before the power up?

They seem to reduce a lot the trottle once in the air. Why can't they keep the engine full trottle?

@sssnowday - The same reason you don't keep your boot into it when you're cruising down the highway in your car. Piston engines, man.

I flew on the connies many times in the late 50's to and from Africa to the states...a different era, to be sure.
When the 707's came into service, we were all flabbergasted at the size, speed and comfort which were light years away from the prop-jobs.
