  • Man this jams so hard. Joe Morello has always been one of my favorite drummers. And Take Five is an awesome tune as well.

  • man.......this is what jazz is ALL about....

  • Oh god, we miss Joe. He was a pure talent.

  • One of the best jazz drummers ever on this planet. He will be truly missed!

  • Take a long Five Joe. RIP

  • just brilliant, thank you x

  • Just brilliant

  • Joe Morello, 1928-2011. Awesome drummer!

  • A killer band. I grew up listening to this music as my dad was a big jazz fan. Keep playing in heaven Joe!!!

  • My friend Mike and I were drummers in high school in the early 60’s, and Joe Morello was our idol. We went to a Dave Brubeck concert one summer night. The show was magical and inspirational. After the show, the group stayed on stage for a meet-and-greet with the fans. We met Joe, who was very friendly and approachable. He let us check out his kit, and he even gave us some pointers on stick technique. It was something I’ll never forget. God Bless Joe Morello!

  • Keep swinging Joe...RIP

  • Brubeck got the inspiration for this song and time signature when he heard Morello 5/4 rhythm and the sax player just practicing before a performance. In essence Morello created the structured foundation for which this song was created.Carl Palmer was working with a 5/4 drum pattern that Kieth Emerson would use as the foundation for the ELP song "Eruption" on the Tarkus album. The importance of drummers that understand a "catchy"rhythmic grove can't be overstated.RIP Joe Morello.

  • Thanks for all the inspiration.

  • Rest in peace JOE

    best jazz song ever...

  • RIP Joe

  • Say hello to Buddy, Louis, Gene and the rest of the musical greats up there...

    RIP Joe

  • I wore this vinyl out.

  • My favorite Take Five... God Bless Joe Morello!!!!

  • One of the best jazz songs and most iconic jazz tune in history.

  • Baddest 5/4 song in history

  • RIP Joe Morello... Keeping banging them drums up there...

  • Comment removed

  • RIP Joe Morello.

  • rip

  • RIP Joe.....

  • I'm really, really going to miss my old friend and teacher Joe. For my money he and Elvin had the best touch/sound on the ride cymbal, let's put the great Billy Higgins in there too.

  • @gregoryburrows I'd put Louis Bellson in there too. Joe was an inspiration to several generations of players through his masterful tuition.

  • 4 Morons - unbelieveable.

  • The drummer who inspired me to play drums.

R.I.P. Joe and thank you for everything <3

  • One of my inspirations to play. Never achieved his greatness but is fun anyway. RIP mister smooth.

  • Sonny Limatina loves to lick penis

  • R.I.P. Joe Morello and thank you for your music :-(

  • Far ahead of their time obviously

  • I can't believe there are people who dislike this! "Take Five" is THE exemplary jazz tune!

  • The Jazz Accountants.

  • 3 dislikes = 3 Joey Jordison fans who landed here by mistake. Classic stuff!

  • 50 years ago, this year

    Dave Brubeck - Take Five.

  • How come there are dislikes?

  • Joe Morello should have done a drum battle with Buddy Rich

  • @Leedysgladstones Most drummers would think I'm crazy saying this but I prefer Joe's laid back, smooth style over Buddy's any day!

  • Better music than today's music.

  • めっちゃええわっ!

  • thats so fucking cool, i cant even describe it

  • WTH? No bass solo?!!

  • That is the best sounding ride cymbal I have ever heard!!! I have to get that sound...Anyone know EXACTLY what type of ride he is playing....weight, how many inch, etc..( it's got to be a Zildjian)

  • @funkydrummer14 He switched to Paiste around that time if I recall. However, check out the Zildjian Armand series - that is close to the sound in the clip.

  • @mike32738 Cool....I'll check that out! I just bought a pair of Zildjian A 14" medium hats from the early 1970's...a vintage ride cymbal with that sound would be a great match!!

  • be$t

  • Yes drummers did!!! So smooth, getting his point across, without alot of crap! Oh the chops are there....but no showing off!

  • Dave looks great at the start of the video with that grin on his face! :)

  • 3:11 WOW!!! Now that's something!!!

  • So difficult in 5/4. No wonder Brubeck turned completely around to watch Morello shine. Jazz geniuses at work!

  • @ridecymbol

Agreed. This is definitely a difficult piece to play well, speaking from experience.

Actually, I think Tito Puente's version of this piece is definitely awesome as well (he converted to 7/4). :D

  • @halo6lord

I have not heard Take 5 in 7/4. I guess that would make it 'Take 7'. I can't imagine tackling that one.

  • @ridecymbol

Check it out! Tito Puente - Take Five... look for the [HQ] one as the live ones have really iffy quality.

Tito has a trumpet playing the head, while it's echoed by another trumpet.

Yeah, I definitely agree that Take 5 in 7/4 would be extremely difficult. :O

  • @ridecymbol At the beginning of this video Dave looked at Morello like he was thinking "Let's see what you've got" xD I bet Joe amazed him numerous times. BTW, is Joe still alive? I know Brubeck is.

  • 3:25

  • Anyone know what kind of ride cymbal he is playing there? Man does that have an amazing sound!!!!!!

  • desmond's got bags of tone.

  • Paul Desmond ties for first place with Stan Getz for best alto sax sound of all time.

    Magbloodynificent!!!!

  • @IowaOz First place goes to Bird - maybe they tie for 2nd.

  • a beber um copo com uns amigos , num bar sossegado , não há melhor !!!

  • Best Jazz Song Ever

  • @StarChildMoviesNL i respectfully and adamantly disagree.

  • @StarChildMoviesNL I think one of the best pieces of music, period. It has a great hook, intricate parts and masterfull musicianship.

  • foottaping aches

  • I like this version.

  • sounds like something i heard from super drumming dvd

  • Still love the way morello touches his glasses while playing an incredible solo!

  • best improvisation version.

  • It sounds better with a fuller string sound in my opinion :/

  • took me soo loooooog to find this song its so good

  • Give me five, I give 5/5 for this perfomance! Morello drumming is the rhytm of all mankind! Also other players are TRUE PLAYERS :)

  • this is perfectly brilliant tune

  • I think this is the best this song sounds. Nice upbeat and a little qicker than normal. So very America back in the early 60's.

  • Joe freakin Moreallo-that's what I'm talkin's bout. What a tremendous talent. Ok-Mr. Brubeck also, but being an aspiring drummer, watching Joe and all-you know.

  • Now Rob remember this epic !

  • i keep coming back to this vid. joe morello is a smooth playing legend....ty

  • moms loves this great peice,as do I . Glad you liked "Wooden Ships" :) :) :)

  • take 50 in some quarters :-xxxxxx

  • I heard today that this was voted 4th best song ever....not sure who or what the reviewing body was..but there you go ....Nice ....

  • My favorite piece of music ever . can't forget it as years roll by ... I bet a new release and a bit of air play .. it sells mega tomes all over again, .... timeless

  • Surreal, sublime and effortless. silky smooth. You go Joe.

  • Holy Cow. Joe Morello is a BEAST!

  • And why can't the black guy get a solo?

  • @doktordre77 Racism.

  • @epdisme It's a beautifully rendered version of a beautiful song that I highly admire. I also love Jazz bass and love it played effortlessly, which Eugene does. I'm just sayin, if there's time for the three white dudes to talk, then why isn't there time for Mr. Wright?

  • @epdisme Bullshit. Eugene Wright would get a solo if he wanted one. In fact, Dave went to bat for Wright when some southern venues said the Quartet couldn't play unless they substituted a white bass player. Dave told them to fuck off, and they caved, because these four guys were big money every show.

  • @doktordre77 well maibe he's not good at improvisation

  • ohne Worte! EInfach nur wundervoll!!!!

  • l'altra faccia della mediolanum

  • Who is the bass player?

  • @tofuleg Bassist is Eugene Wright ~

  • Very Great Song!

  • that drum solo.............

  • uoww excelnte buen video buen tema

  • By far one of the most musical drummers of all time...

  • When i was tripping on mushrooms i listened to this song atleast 20 or 30 times in a row, needless to say it was a good time

  • Beste vom Besten !

  • Who is the drummer?

  • @dozeydevon The great Joe Morello

  • Es impresionante. En verdad uno de los grandes clásicos del jazz. La intervención de Joe Morello es fantástica. La melodía del sax es, definitivamente, excepcional.

  • I pity the 3 who do not like this amazing video

  • @RiversideIndian On a video like this, I'm betting the thumbs down was hit on accident.

  • Excellent!!!

    Grandma Mary

  • They are all great but those bass lines just flow and flow making the music playing so smooth. He just sets everything off and when they solo you know it is about to happen.

  • i thought this was going to be a beatles vid, glad i did. never heard before, but fell in love.thanks for improving my life!!

  • Was playing with drum pads while thinking Take 5, decided to search on You Tube to see the real thing. Joe Morello is so expresses so well with minimal energy wasted on flair, very elegant and Zen. This is one of my favorite Jazz pieces of all time . . . hope you enjoy.

  • bisogna studiare la storia!!

  • That´s genuine jazz, groovy and smooth. Thanks for sharing!!!

  • hell. yes.

  • Just the best....

  • this defines jazz so smooth and classy. thank you soooo much for putting this up!

  • @moroccansunshine smooth cool andclassy !!!!! As for Joe Morello ? Outstanding.

  • This is one of the most unique versions of this song, considering the drum solo, how can anyone come here, looking for this song, and find a BETTER version and give a thumbs down? We have 3 so far, that makes no sense.

  • @voxslain i guess those are just missclicks :)

  • And all this is done without any sign of effort. Definitely another era !

  • Unglaublich!

  • a great remarkable song!! i'm glad i joined our school's big band otherwise i'd be one of those jonas-brothers-crap-listeners :) dave brubeck worshipers unite!

  • Lost for words. Joe is great!

  • yes the best jazz in the world

  • LOVE THAT BEAT !!!

  • The magnificent Joe Morello! Listening to him on clips of him in his late 70s, he still commands the utmost respect and admiration of any drummer.

  • The drummer had DIGNITY in those days.

  • @shechaiyah Thats Joe Morello

  • @shechaiyah

everything had dignity back then dude...

  • Morello really CREATED something there. Master of time.

  • OMG! that drum solo is absolutely out of this world? Was that guy an autistic savant or something? Must have played since he was 2 years old haha.. amazing!

  • I would not call him an autistic savant, but he was a musical child prodigy on the violin. See his biography on Wikipedia.
