Hearing this on my local PBS' program lineup slates when I was a kid is what got me into jazz. I've been a jazz drummer for years now because of this. Joe - You will always be my favorite buddy.
@BrutallyHonestGamers It was a nice site until you messed up it with your aggressive comment. Live and let live. Hear and let hear. Like and let dislike
My friend Mike and I were drummers in high school in the early 60’s, and Joe Morello was our idol. We went to a Dave Brubeck concert one summer night. The show was magical and inspirational. After the show, the group stayed on stage for a meet-and-greet with the fans. We met Joe, who was very friendly and approachable. He let us check out his kit, and he even gave us some pointers on stick technique. It was something I’ll never forget. God Bless Joe Morello!
Brubeck got the inspiration for this song and time signature when he heard Morello 5/4 rhythm and the sax player just practicing before a performance. In essence Morello created the structured foundation for which this song was created.Carl Palmer was working with a 5/4 drum pattern that Kieth Emerson would use as the foundation for the ELP song "Eruption" on the Tarkus album. The importance of drummers that understand a "catchy"rhythmic grove can't be overstated.RIP Joe Morello.
I'm really, really going to miss my old friend and teacher Joe. For my money he and Elvin had the best touch/sound on the ride cymbal, let's put the great Billy Higgins in there too.
That is the best sounding ride cymbal I have ever heard!!! I have to get that sound...Anyone know EXACTLY what type of ride he is playing....weight, how many inch, etc..( it's got to be a Zildjian)
@funkydrummer14 He switched to Paiste around that time if I recall. However, check out the Zildjian Armand series - that is close to the sound in the clip.
@mike32738 Cool....I'll check that out! I just bought a pair of Zildjian A 14" medium hats from the early 1970's...a vintage ride cymbal with that sound would be a great match!!
@ridecymbol At the beginning of this video Dave looked at Morello like he was thinking "Let's see what you've got" xD I bet Joe amazed him numerous times. BTW, is Joe still alive? I know Brubeck is.
Joe freakin Moreallo-that's what I'm talkin's bout. What a tremendous talent. Ok-Mr. Brubeck also, but being an aspiring drummer, watching Joe and all-you know.
My favorite piece of music ever . can't forget it as years roll by ... I bet a new release and a bit of air play .. it sells mega tomes all over again, .... timeless
@epdisme It's a beautifully rendered version of a beautiful song that I highly admire. I also love Jazz bass and love it played effortlessly, which Eugene does. I'm just sayin, if there's time for the three white dudes to talk, then why isn't there time for Mr. Wright?
@epdisme Bullshit. Eugene Wright would get a solo if he wanted one. In fact, Dave went to bat for Wright when some southern venues said the Quartet couldn't play unless they substituted a white bass player. Dave told them to fuck off, and they caved, because these four guys were big money every show.
Es impresionante. En verdad uno de los grandes clásicos del jazz. La intervención de Joe Morello es fantástica. La melodía del sax es, definitivamente, excepcional.

They are all great but those bass lines just flow and flow making the music playing so smooth. He just sets everything off and when they solo you know it is about to happen.
Was playing with drum pads while thinking Take 5, decided to search on You Tube to see the real thing. Joe Morello is so expresses so well with minimal energy wasted on flair, very elegant and Zen. This is one of my favorite Jazz pieces of all time . . . hope you enjoy.
This is one of the most unique versions of this song, considering the drum solo, how can anyone come here, looking for this song, and find a BETTER version and give a thumbs down? We have 3 so far, that makes no sense.

Actually, I think Tito Puente's version of this piece is definitely awesome as well (he converted to 7/4). :D

Check it out! Tito Puente - Take Five... look for the [HQ] one as the live ones have really iffy quality.
Tito has a trumpet playing the head, while it's echoed by another trumpet.
Yeah, I definitely agree that Take 5 in 7/4 would be extremely difficult. :O
