This song is about a woman being abused. "Green Lights, 7-11, you stop there, buy a pack of cigarettes, you don't smoke, don't want to", the woman is being forced to buy cigarettes for him. "When he hits you, you feel alive", the woman is so used to the pain and Bono talks about "staying" overnight so he can be with her, end her pain. At the end, "Just the bang, and the clatter, as an angel, hits the ground", she kills herself, falls to the ground, the clatter is the gun dropping, very sad song

Bruno Graz (lead in the film) and Nastassja Kinski (the sequel) are both in this film clip and like the movie its filmed in Berln. Im not sure if the lyric follows the films or is about an abuse woman but the line "an angel hits the ground" was based on how an angel becomes human again in the movies...

@MelanTheCholeric I used to think that way too but if you look at the inspiration for this song you'll probably chage your mind. It's about beeing an angel willing for feeling humanity. "You say when he hits you, you don't mind because when he hurts you, you feel alive." I think these are the words of someone who can actually FEEL the life, not like the angels which don't feel anything. This track is inspired by "Wings of Desire" anyway.

But of course, anyone can interprete it their own way.

the video is indeed filmed some in Berlin..and zooropa was recorded some in Berlin as well,not as much as AchtungBaby--U2 was in middle of biggest tour to date when they decided to release Zooropa...and i believe they filmed Stay because they had filmed other videos there as well,a version of One for example
