  • so it was worth it?

  • You can grind the crap out of the chambers and not change CR enough to make a bit of difference. Fact is CR is theortical in nature, what fill % does an engine have? If you make it easier to fill by relieving the chamber wall and moving it away from the valve, unshrouding, it gets more air into the hole, so who knows where the dynamic compression ends up. I know the engines make more power, so more air must be gettin in. Polish don't move air, it sells heads. slick chambers soak up less heat

  • Well done!

  • Wonder what the stock heads flow before doing any work to them ? Does anybody happen to know the stock SOHC 2.0 lt flow numbers for both ports. There was a time when MOPAR sold porting templates for there heads. Not sure about the 4 cylinders thou. BTW you did not say if the V-guides & pistons where still good after the bent valves... Hope you get a fair reward for the money & time. Best, yl

  • looks good for a first timer, lol i do this as a sidejob and have been doing it for a while and sometimes its a struggle even with the tools i have, i cant even imagine how long it took you with a dremel! not bad at all though, first head i ported was in high school shop class a 5hp briggs n straton hahaha

  • @96Rolla briggs and straton are flatheads, and there is nothing to "port" but nice try anyway.

  • if you just polish the combustion chamber it wont change your CR bad enough for you to notice unless u dont know what your doing its only to keep carbon from sticking to the metal

  • Its a cheap car that i wanted to do something to for the practice and the hell of it while it was apart. Its a non tubro neon so not much was expected. and the CR was increased by the 0.030 taken of the head when it was apart. Maybe when i get serioius with one of my mustang projects I'll spend alittle more time and attention to detail and go all out with it.. appreciate the info. though!

  • With the head milled 0.030 the CR will be 10.40 on a SOHC. You can mill to 0.050 without timing belt issue.

  • how did u get the valves out? there at a horrid angle

  • Mopar 2.0 SOHC allready have 9.8:1 CR, you are in the 10.x:1 Range for sure!!

  • no your not how does a ported head give you a higher CR, unless your talking about Dymanic CR

  • The CR was not increased by porting the head, it was the 0.030 taken off the head.I couldn't go any more cause the machine shop said it would give me timing belt issues (being to loose due to a shorter head)

  • nice art

  • so the port help out.. was going to port my head myself thought be fun.. but people started offerring me huge discount tellin me not to do it myself because I might ruin head.. my shop said he'd do it for $200 as side project if I could go without car for a week or 2.. too bad not in texas anymore

  • didn't this changed the compress ratio? thanks.

  • Yes but i'm not sure by how much.

  • did you get any more power? or was it like a noticeable amount of torque? considering a miata 1.6, port/polish head, higher compression pistons... aiming for 11:1, doubt i'll get there. think i'll use a drill press for this, then dremel to clean it up.

  • your not gona more/loose compression by proting the head ?!?!?! only modify the turbulence in the cylinder when air pass trought the head, giving u a better air/fuel mix and small fuel drops, that how you get more easy hp and plann 0.020 of the head encrease compression a little bit, not that much give u extra power, but if u port your head too much........gona loose 15hp instead of gaining 5hp lolllll

  • Damn interference engines! The tensioner failed on hubby's NYG last week and bent up his valves. Time for the 2.4 swap I guess. (especially since all this happened less than 100 miles after replacing the head gasket, plugs and wires, swapping out the intake and exaust manifolds and putting in a new radiator) God damn .34 cent bolt!

  • Are you sure they took off .30"? That's a big hunk of metal. Did you mean .030

  • Yes I meant .030

  • did it make a noticeable diff?

  • It seamed to help on the top end of things. Still trying to get more low end torque, but was worth the time, seeing as I had to take it all apart to fix bent vavles. And also I had it milled for $60 and took 0.30 off of it to bump compression alittle. Good luck!

  • This was all for fun with limited tools, no garage and out in the cold. And next time I will have better tools and hopefully warmer. For an everyday driver at 90 miles a day, I was able to maintain 32 miles a gallon and a nice increase from 4,000- 5,600 rpm. If I wanted to go faster I'd turbo it or just get in one of my mustangs for the day. The car is a great everyday driver through Columbus rush hour traffic and takes one hell of a beaten! But thanks for the comments!

  • Dude you have to get around those valve guides. The exhaust becomes static in that area.

  • I see you got lazy around the valve guides. What I suggest - theres a carbide tip sears sells thats really small and is able to get around those valve guides good and proper :)

  • the porting is great?
