"Upsets the mainstream conventions of narrative structure and characterization and destroys (or, at least, toys with) the audience's suspension of disbelief to create a work in which a less-recognizable internal logic forms the film's means of expression"
Worked for me!
I dislike Existentialism-philospohically. However your short film did a good job capturing the essence of this plot in the basic framework of existentialism.
Now we're talking. We tried to make the film as 'sensory' as possible, because that is the way Mersault experiences life (he hears the nails and the clinks and the waves, he is pierced by the sun, he registers voices but loses track of their drift through boredom), and we tried to blur over actual 'events' or plot points to keep the audience rooted in the absolute now... how is that not existential?...and what is an existential style, anyway?

Is that a bad thing? Keep in mind, this was designed for a class that had all (theoretically) read the book.
Also, I find Meursalt's logic relatively alien (at the very least less-recognizable); hence the title of the book. I don't think there ever will be such a person - he is just a part of each of us.
Mersault is indeed possible, and my last comment was not describing a bad video, it described postmodernism nearly verbatim from Marriam-Webster's dictionary. You refuted none of those claims proving that while the video was not inherently "bad," is most certainly not existential and still stands as a disgrace to The Stranger, Camus, and Existentialism itself.
Etranger, je ne sais pas. Etrange, certainement.

CAMUS WAS FRENCH NOT ALGERIAN!!!!! =o =o =o

Yeah he was French born in Algeria and he was also not an Existentialist, he was an Absurdist.

Beutifully executed depiction of existentialist plight.

I would say that you missed everything that made the book great, outside of the sensory experience. Dropped the ball on everything else.
It's like you made it for an art class and not philosophy class. Oh post-modern "art"....
Starski4 2 years ago
But the whole novel itself is based upon an individual (Meursalt) who exists only by sensory experience.

Wow! Great job. Your work truly represents Meursault's sensory awareness and 'in the moment' way of life.
actingup63 3 years ago
I dug this. You've really captured the "sensory overload" that Meursault experiences in the book. Great job, guys!
visorhater 3 years ago
Only real problem I can think of is that you need to have read the book to really appreciate it. It's a different experience.

The film was more postmodern than existential. A disgrace to The Stranger, Camus, and Existentialism itself.

Camus considers Mersault to be the epitome of the absurd man, so at the very least he must believe it to be possible

@ccr1567 Camus is not an existentialist. The Stranger is not an existentialist novel. It just exhibits some existentialist tenets.
But this was a pretty big disgrace to The Stranger...

But it was better than most the videos of the stranger most high school students made for their IOP's.

Very good, you left out a lot of interesting things like the man and his dog, but over all well done Camus would be proud.

I wish we had had the time and means to do the full Stranger. As it is, we tried to capture the world of Mersault.
