  • This is a perfect example and very easy to follow. Well done!

  • Hello-I am a groomer also and have yet to find a pair of thinning shears that I really really like--and I use them alot of course. What kind do you use and reccomend if you don't mind my asking? Thank you so much and this video was great for me, too! :)

  • Thank you so much for this video. I have been trying to groom my dog and found it helpful. Although I still can't make her look as good as you do. I will get better. She does not like to have me trim with scissors or the shaver around her eyes so it becomes real difficult. I am affraid I will cut her. But I hope with time she will get a little more used to it. Thanks again.

  • Great video! Thanks so much for the super helpful, very informative video. Love your professionalism in both your craft and manner. Again, thanks!

  • Thank you for this video. I really appreciate this because I want to save money on grooming costs. :)

  • Thank you for this video. I'm new to grooming. I used your video to groom a friend's shih tzu, it was SO helpful. My friend absolutely loved the outcome. Whew! Thanks again!

  • pauvre chien devenu à la portéé des coiffeuses !

  • je prefere laisser mon chien tel qu'il est !!!!!!!!!!!!!!et ne pa le rendre con!

  • Thanks for the video! I'm going to attempt to groom my shih tzu's face, but she can be quite the diva. She won't let me trim her nails, but is perfect for the groomer or vet staff!

  • OMG SHE IS SO CUTEEE!!!!!!!!!!!:)

  • OMG I wish my shih tzu was that patient!!! My dog is a nut ball:)

  • I have a question. Can you cut the body with sissors, or you just have to have a 7 or 4 blade? I am not sure if you can cut it with sissors. I assume it would be more complicated! :S

  • what a fantastic job! I am just new to grooming taking a Distant education course where i do mainly theory but thier are not practical (you have to learn from reading videos etc) so its nice to see someone actually grooming a dog! I will soon be grooming shih tz's thanks for the video!!!

  • Thank you for sharing this video. It was terrific. The one question I have for you is that I noticed you combed her fur straight forward over her eyes and then scissored, and I have seen other groomers comb to the side and then scissor. Is that just personal preference?

  • Where are you located!!!

  • wow I so love your video!!! tks for that showing!!

  • Thank you very much for this post!!!. Great work!!. xxx

  • what's the name of the curved scissors you used?

  • super lesson 1 thanks

    gone do on my dog

  • she is so cute

  • Your Shih Tzu looks so adorable. My nephew also has a Shih Tzu with brown & white fur.

  • Awesome technique! She looks so cute! Can you do a full grooming tutorial for shih tzu teddy style? :X wld rly love to know how

  • Thank you so much! I've subscribed to your videos now and I'll be back. I've wanted to learn to groom my 1 year old Shih Zu, Isabella, for a while now.

    Jennifer from CT

  • Nice vid. We have a Shih Tzu and she LOVES EVERYONE! Like most of them do.

  • Such a cute and happy doggie...

  • Wanting to locate the clippers and blades video! I would love to view it. I have the Andis two speed clippers. The clippers are far superior than any others I've tried. ! I am not ever real sure which size blade to use on my Shih Tzu's though. For a super short Summer cut I've tried the 5FC blade..it's good, little too short. Also, which size would be good for a longer Winter cut, maybe 2 or3 inches long. I've tried a 3 3/4FC blade with no luck. It's like they are not sharp!?

  • Hi I bought the Andis clipper that came with guards and 10 blade. With the guards on I find it difficult to trim the legs and feet evenly to where it will look good. I notice you do not use guards. Should I just buy a 4, 7 and 40 blade and then I don't need to use guards? I was afraid to cut my dog without the guards thinking I'd cut her. I like to leave my dogs hair atleast 1/4 inch long with teddy bear face. Which number blade would be close to 1/4 inch?

  • @kjwoodall325 YES buy the actual blades for heavens sake... snap on combs are really hard to use when you are new to grooming... they still give me trouble. You do need to be careful with blades but the ones you mentioned are pretty safe ones to use, just make sure you get the F blades (finish) NOT the skip tooth blades. They will say 7F 4F... the 40 is just a 40. The 7F or a 5F would be closest to a 1/4 inch. Hope this helps! Good luck!

  • i ditto above, i will be doing my puppy this week and i wanted to get tips, i have the clippers with all the attachments and i am excited to try but also a bit afraid .. Thanks so much, very nice and what cute bella

  • thanks for the video!!!!

  • what a fantastic video! thank you for your very clear instructions! i will be using your tips to groom my Lhasa Apso :) oh and i LOVE petedge :D

  • Thank you for this post, I've learned so much from it. I've wanted to learn how to groom my Shih tzu's face for a long time. Bella is a super cute little girl, I love that dog....such a sweet disposition. She's quite the star.

Where can I get professional electric shears with the different size blades? Do you have an online store you buy from?

  • @bluegrassgirl44 Yes Ma'am I go through Petedge.com and I recommend you get a pair of Andis 2 speeds, you should watch my video on clippers and blades if you are really serious about getting a pair and doing your own dog regularly. ;)

  • Thanks for all the great tips! Such a great tutorial. :)

  • @TattoosBeGone Thank you! :)

  • Thank you for a great video & narration. Our little Molly is a rescue dog & looks like Bella - even in coloration! Only difference is Molly has a little longer muzzle. Now if she'd just be calm, like Bella, when I clip her!

Unless you've already done so, would you please show us the tools you use & how to keep Bella combed out? Unsure as to what to use for Molly's thick, wavy hair.

    Again, thank you!

  • I LOVE YOUR DOG and yoou helped me groom my shitzu!! THANK YOU bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for this video and all your others, I began watching because I wanted to groom my cavalier spaniel, now I'm on dog grooming course in Uk and your videos are invaluable.

  • This is what I`ve been looking for . An excellent video , clear , up close & well lit so we can see exactly what`s going on . Informative & simple instructions to follow & last but not least , a groomers dream dog , Bella . I agree with an earlier comment , just clipping around her eyes was instant cuteness .

  • @109ecroyd Thank you, such a nice comment! :) Just groomed Miss Bella again yesterday. ;) She has no idea she's become quite the celebrety LOL :)

  • what blade did you use on the body and on the neck( i know you said 1 or 2 shorter than the one on the body???? thanks for this great video

  • @Jessicague315 Ok I hadn't done her body yet in the video, but I usually use a 3 3/4 or a 4 on her body, I use either a 7 or a 5 on her neck.

  • ma parlate italiano?

  • @BarbaraGenna No, non parlo italiano, spiacente. deve utilizzare il traduttore in linea.

  • are those special electric clippers, or just normal human ones?

  • @Angele905 They are pet grooming clippers. You can see more about them and the blades used on my "clippers and blades" video. ;)

  • So what did you do for the top of the head? Clip it with the same blade you did the body?

  • @mykeee Yes, I clipped the top of her head the same as her body. If a Top Knot is wanted then you would leave it.

  • Thank you!

  • Excellent teaching video! I'm getting a "Coton de Tulear" soon, and being a "human" hairdresser, I think I'll be able to handle it myself..I'm wondering..Are "dog" clippers/shears "really the same as the ones I've used for "hairdressing?" They are the same "brand names"...Please let me know before I run out and "spend money I do not need too spead...Also, what is the "best brush" to use on a "daily basis" for my thick coated German Shepherd?

  • @christinelou1 No dog and human equipment is different. They are made by the same brands but are different. Dog shears are much thicker due to having to be shaprened often. Clippers and the blades you use are different too. Not really sure how though on those. I would use a slicker brush along with a double toothed comb, by double toothed I mean one with two different lenghts of teeth. long short long short long etc. hope that helps. :)

  • What length of shears are you using on this video, 10 inch?

  • @mykeee 8 inch actually.

  • Thanks for great direction, now my Cairn terrier (teddy bear cut) looks great and it was my first go at it. I do have a request for you. When I lived in Colorado my groomer always groomed the potty trail in a beautiful heart shape, accentuating the two cowlicks that are on his "cheeks". It was very nice looking, and always got a thumbs up from everyone.,Since I have moved out to California though, no one seems to know how to do this. Can you show us on a video?

  • @wagerlk I must admitt, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by the heart shaped potty trail... if you had a picture I could possibly do it but I'm sure you didn't take a picture of your dogs bum... LOL Sorry I couldn't help you out there. I'm curious now, wish I could talk to your old groomer in CO :)

  • really cute face, the #40 scares me though, i ve been grooming for a year and i seldom even use clippers on the face since most of the dogs we have dont handle it well, but she was very good and very cute.

  • That's my dog don't be haten

  • what type of thinning shears do you USE?!!

  • @ILuvMyScraty Right off hand I don't remember the brand but that really doesn't matter with thinner/blenders I just recommend getting a pair that have the most teeth you can find. Mine are 42 toothed. The more teeth the nicer the cut. It blends better and doesn't look choppy.

  • oh goodness i wanna swap my shih tzu with bella

i just attempted to groom her today..... i dont wanna talk about it lol

  • I HAVE A DOG BUT NER HES TAIL IT ALL MEASY

  • is that a andis ultra blade?

  • Good job! I would love this cut for my Shih Tzu. He is still a bit hyper though. Any tips for keeping him calm? Bogie is 1-1/2 yr old.

  • Wow. she looks uber cute already with just the face scooped out. reminds me of my little angel :) love love love this post!

  • @SunKissedLioness Thanks! :)

  • Thank you, Thank you for this video. It has helped me so much with grooming my Shih Tzu's faces.

  • thank you so much for this video! i was wondering how to blend the teddy bear face/head with the rest of the body when you're doing a short puppy cut for the rest of the body?

  • spanielmom93 I want to thank you you have showed me such wonderful info. I have a male maltese 10lbbs and a female maltipoo 7 lbs. I cant afford to take both all the time to the groomers. They may get to go 2 times a year. Thank you for taking the time to post this.

  • WOW i wish my dog could stay still like this one

  • awesome video liked and subscribed i have 2 shih tzus im trying to train

  • This is such a good inspiration. I'll be tackling my girls tomorrow between professional grooming, and this is a great confidence builder. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

  • Hi, my shih tzu is matted on her tail, feet and lower back. Her name's Bella also :) Do you think this teddy bear face will look good if her body gets buzzed?

  • @comicalbonkers Of course, she'll look just fine. Just make sure to try to make it proportionate to her body, in other words if you have to cut her short then do her teddy bear face a little shorter as well. That way she won't look like she has a huge head. ;)

  • @spanielmom93 Thank you so much. :) We've taken her to the groomers and they usually don't match her teddy bear face with her body, kinda makes her look like a dandelion! Haha

  • How do you get a shih tzu to sit still like that when you clip them? We have a shih tzu that's about a year old and she wants nothing to do with clippers. It's super hard to clip her. How can I get her used to the clippers??? Your videos are great!

  • OMG that dog is so well behaved. My Yoda would have my butt!!!

  • this dog is so sweet! how long did it take you to get the confidence you seem to have, to cut a dog's hair so efficiently and quickly? i have a shih tzu but i am so scared of hurting her. so me grooming does not work. but i'd like to learn. now that i think of it, i am going to search for someone to teach me how to groom my dog. nice video!

  • @sharaim Well, I was a bather for 6 months before I even touched a pair of clippers... it does take time but practice makes perfect. :) Thanks so much for your comment! :)

  • I prefer a round teddy bear face instead of a top knot on shih tzu. I had my own first cut for my shih tzu based on what you showing on your video. I think my cut is not as perfect as yours , but I'm happy with it :) Now he has a cute teddy bear face!! Thank you so much for sharing!!

  • looks like a live teedy Bear.

  • hello thanks for the video----can you tell me what blade # u used for the neck part. also did you just clean and trim up the ears..thanks for the great video....

  • @SMOKEONEMORE420 Hi there, on Bella I used a number 7 blade on her neck because she gets a number 4-5 on her body. If you aren't cutting the body shorter then I recommend using thinning shears for the neck. I usually say a blade or two shorter then the one you are using on the body... does that make sense? And yes, her ears just get cleaned, plucked, and trimmed up around the bottom. :)

  • Can you tell me about your thinning shears? Are they a 30 tooth? Brand? They seem to really blend well. Watching your video prioritized me getting new scissors!

  • thanks for sharing the video! real helpful! i;ve been struggling to shape my baby's face. Can you share also how to shape their ear hair? sometimes it gets too long and thick and i usually end up giving her "boxy" shaped ears.

  • @pinkberry87 Yes, if you watch the creative Cocker trim I have uploaded I show you how to trim ear hair on it. Not sure wich part it is but I do cover that in one of the creative Cocker trim videos. ;)

  • thanks for sharing the video! real helpful! i;ve been struggling to shape my baby's face. Can you share also how to shape their ear hair? sometimes it gets too long and thick and i usually end up giving her "boxy" shaped ears.

  • We're looking to get a Shih Tzu, so I appreciate you educating us. :-)

  • I just love these little dogs...I've had two, and miss them both very much ~! :(

  • What type of curved scissors and thinning shears do you use? Too bad I'm too far away, I can't bring my Shih Tzu to you to groom!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have just begun to try to groom my Shih-tzu's to save money and this was a tremendous help!

  • I love this video, I am going to groom my own malti-shitzu whom looks like Bella, and this instruction for a teddy bear face is excellent, and has taught me alot, thank you

  • Wow!! is that a pure ST?? (personal opinion, I think it look like ST x Bichon Frise)

  • @tez1204 Yes, she is a pure Shih Tzu... I will send you a vid of a Shih Bish mix to show you the difference LOL :)

  • Thanks for posting really love all your

    videos,very helpful I have a shih tzu

puppy(8months) she is great when being groomed impossible to get a good groomer in my area ,rural Ireland, would like to give

it a go,myself even inbetween groomer visits I know it will probably take practice

but , can you recommend a good electric

clippers, keeping hair on head like Bella's

with a low maintence shorter body,

  • I like this video! I think the shaved neck gives the head and face more contrast. Also looks very clean. nice scissoring as well.

  • @Lavasurfer1 Thanks! :)

  • Hi Spanielmom you are a gift to pet owners like me. I have a Shih Tzu terrier. She is my baby but very squirmy even at the Grooming school. I appreciate this because at least I can maintain her at home in between her grooming appts. I am patient so I'm willing to learn. Never mind the rude comments everyone techniques arenn't the same. Great job.

  • @mzj88 Thank you, that is very nice of you to say. ;) Glad I could help!

  • @mzj88 Thank you so much, you are the kind of people I am doing this for. :) good to know I am appreciated. :)

  • thank you for this video! I have a Shih-tzu named Sophie and she thanks you too since now her momma doesn't screw up her little face all the time. I still need to invest in the rounded shears and thinning shears, but at least this still helps her look neat every few weeks. Thanks again!

  • I tried to do this look on my dog and she just would not stay still. I tried giving her treats but that didnt work either what should i do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I REALLY NEED HELP

  • @MaKeUpAdDiCt15 Well if you want to do it at home the only thing that will help is patience and practice. The more you do it the better your dog should get, try getting someone to help hold your dog still. Keep up with the treats and positive rewards and just don't get frusterated. It can be scary and some dogs never learn to like it, but most can learn to tolerate it. Is your dog aggressive about it or just squirmy?

  • I found this very informative - especially after having both my little dogs massacered at a new groomer. My question is, do I need special clippers for dogs? I do have thinning shears - people ones but would I also have to get thinning shears for dogs? Thanks so much

  • I love the shaved neck. You're right, it does keep it neat. I also like how you shaved behind the ears because it always gets matted there. Thanks for sharing. The teddy bear face is absolutely adorable!

  • @lilmunky11 Again thanks! :) I think so too. ;)

  • The shaved neck is terrible, I would never do that to my clients dogs!

  • Well that's you sweet heart. ;) I like it and it keeps them nice and clean around the ear canal for less infections. :)

  • Great Video!

I'm in grooming school currently and love the idea of shaving out the eye area prior to bathing. It will make the cleaning process much easier.

  • @siaccino Yes, it sure does. Thanks! :)

  • Fabulous vid (not too sure about the shaved neck, but that's just a personal thing).

I don't know if she'll let me use clippers by her eyes like that - and it's hard to tell how much to cut away right under her eyes. Is there anyway to do a video using scissors?

    She's a beautiful girl!

  • thank you so much for the video it helps me so much... my shih tzu is not so full furred, is there a way to encourage growth?

  • Nothing I know of, you may check with your Veterinarian though. ;)

  • Who taught you to shave the neck like that? It's godawful. I would never, ever want my clients dogs to walk out of my shop looking like that. I would be reamed out by them for doing such a thing. It's disjointed looking, not proportionate to body.

  • No one taught me that I just came up with it on my own, it is a personal preferance and I have NEVER had a complaint. I don't see any grooming videos on your channel so how about you keep your rude comments to yourself until you can back it up! ;) Have a nice day!! :) By the way, she wasn't done, I hadn't clipped her body yet, you can't see the neck when all done... just so you know.

  • Great informational video! Thanks! Bella is such a sweetie.

  • She is so well behaved! I can't imagine my dog sitting still for all this!

  • Great tips...thank u...pet groomer

  • thank you very much for the video i gave my shih tzu a cut the other day (first time grooming for me) and i about cried on what a terrible job i did.

  • Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for a video on this! Bella is so well behaved!

  • bella is such a happy dog, she kept wagging her tail non-stop

  • So very thankful for your posting. I have groomed my dogs myself for some time but never had this kind of information. You are a blessing!

  • Great video! I've been grooming my Shih Tzu for 6 years because no one could get her face to look like a Teddy Bear. I will have to get some curved shears...they seem to make the job a lot easier. Keep the good videos coming!

  • Thank you so much! Best video I've seen. I have 3 Shih Tzu's and have been grooming them myself since I got my first one 3 1/2 years ago. Your video is the most helpful. Where can I buy quality shears? Thanks!

  • Adorable. Thanks for sharing.

  • OMG THIS IS WONDERFUL!!!! i never would have though of that little trick you did with the muzzle and curved shears, i will be doing that on all my teddy bear heads!!!!

  • cool this is helpful;

  • Excellent video. Such a sweet little dog and a wonderful cheerful narrator. You make it very simple and use easy to understand language. THANK YOU!

  • what a lovely lovely lady. I am so happy to have found your videos, My training as a groomer is just finished and I am due to open my own business in the next few weeks. You have such a different way to that of my tutor who is a little stern. I will definitely refer to your videos for my work and especially when i get stuck. best wishes from Ireland

  • Bella is gorgeous!!!! I am trying this look on my puppy Missy.Very helpful

  • I also would like to thank you for showing me the light on how to groom my 2 babies. they are my practice dogs for my on line course and they also thank you so much..I can't wait to see all of your next videos, they are great and so educational.

    thanks mokituk..

  • You are very welcome. ;) Thank you for your kind comment.

  • I have watched this video about 10 times! I find it so helpful because i have a Shih Poo that i groom myself, and she has a very long nose and an under bite! So i couldn't get a nice haircut for her! And so i tried this on her and i think it turned out very well! I will try and get some before and after pictures to you, maybe you could suggest something! And once again, great video!

  • Glad you liked it. Just send me some pics and I will let you know how I think she will look the cutest. ;)

  • I have been watching your videos, and I think they are excellent. I am taking a dog grooming course online and am almost done, I believe I learned more from your videos than my text books! Thank you for your posting your videos, very helpful!

  • Thank you that is very nice of you to say. I am glad they have been helpful for you, that is why I post them afterall. ;) Thanks for the comment and good luck with your course! ;)

  • I just watched your video, and wanted to say thank you for posting these videos.....What a huge help this will be for me as I will be grooming my first shih tzu tomarrow. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

  • No, Thank you! and Good luck on your Shih Tzu! :)

  • great vid! my only comment would be to use a #10 or #30 blade on the eyes. As a groomer, I've seen plenty of nicks and cuts over the years when people use #40s to scoop the eyes. Until you are very comfortable using the clipper and with how your dog handles having clippers in his face, I would stick with a safer blade!

  • Thanks for your comment. I actually feel that the #40 is the safer blade personally, the teeth are much closer together therefore less chance the skin will get in between them. Thank you for your take on things though this might help others. ;) Have a great day.

  • You're an amazing groomer!

How long have you been grooming for?

  • Hi and thank you for your kind words. :) I have been a groomer for over 7 years now. ;)

  • Great video I saw one where the poor dog was in pain and not happy!! Your gentle with Bella which is nice to see!! Thanks for the video I always wonder how the groomers could get the beard nice and even---Thinning sheers!!! I'm going to buy some!! Thanks Prsian I can tell you care about Bella!!

  • Thank you very much for your comment. I love them all! :) Bella is a very sweet girl, who couldn't love a girl who wiggles her tail each time you talk to her? LOL Thanks again for the kind words. :)

  • I am a new Shih Tzu mom and used your video to do his first cut. It turned out good, I think!!! Thank you!! I am wondering if I can have him have a shorter beard than I see some Shih Tzu's have. He is a messy eater and I want him clean and smelling good. Bella seems to have a shorter beard than most I have seen. Is it a personal preference or is there a recommended length? Thanks again, you have done a wonderful job with this video!! I used scizzors around the eyes, afraid of clippers.

  • Hi and thanks for the comment. :) You can trim your dogs face as short as you like, some people even shave them, though that is an entirely different look. :) I find that the shorter they are the cleaner they stay. ;) Good luck and have a wonderful day! :)

  • Thank you so much for sharing your grooming techniques. You are a God-send. Makes me wish I had some curved shears, to give it a go-when the time is right for my Baby! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge! We love You for it!

  • Thank you for that nice comment. :) I have had a couple mean comments lately so this is nice to hear. :) Thank you so much for making my day a little better. :D

  • 123ayc

Well I got shears from Ryan's and decided to trim my two new pups. I cannot tell you how much easier it is with the curved shears!! The thinning shears really make a nice final look. I got a rubber mat for them to stand on so they don't slip and I think that really helps. They were both so patient (with much praise). Thank you again for sharing your talents.

  • Not a problem! Thanks again for the nice comment. I really appreciate it. :)

  • 123ayc

You do a great job and thank you so much for all the information. I have two Shih Tzu puppies and I would like to know if you have a video for a puppy cut (with the Teddy Bear face). What size blades do you use on your Andis for the puppy cut?

  • Well it all depends on what you consider a "puppy cut". On puppies, normally I don't really trim much off at all, usually around the face feet and sanitary area. Basically a maintanence clip. Now if you want length off the entire body I consider that a kennel clip and that is what I showed you in this video. You can use whatever blade you like. The longest I know of is a 5/8, and will leave the hair ABOUT an inch, and the shortest I would recommend is a 7 wich is SHORT. It's all up to you Thanks

  • Thanks for showing Bella. Do you have a video on how to puppy cut a Shih Tzu. I have two puppies. Thanks

  • what a perfect instruction video! bella is such a good puppy. i'm going to attempt this on my lhasa apso this weekend, blueberry. she isn't nearly as good as bella so wish me luck!

  • Excellent indications, easy to learn, thanks. That's great you want to share your experience. Looking forward next lessons about other breeds :)

  • Spanielmom93 - Thanks for the good videos. We have a Shihpoo and want to do our grooming at home. Can you please recommend the right equipment? I have tried the $40 trimmers from wal-mart and they don't even begin to do through the dog's hair. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Thanks! I sent you a video, hope it helps. Thanks again for the nice comment. :)
