Americans need to be a lot more cocky and much less trusting. If these events prove anything, it's that there is always someone casting there covetious eyes on their neighbor.

Believe it or not, I think you got closer to the truth than anyone commenting on this topic.
People have long speculated if we knew the attack was comming or not, but even if we didn't we should have, or at least remained ready incase it did.
