Amazing, teaching children to respect themselves through an art based on control of self, other and respect. I only see issues with school yard fights ending by arm bar vs fat lip :( .....
the BJJ that Helio created was a "defensive" martial art. Being able to withstand the larger opponent and survive. Helio never intended it to be offensive or to be on the attack.
If it saves someones ass, then it can be considered successful. People talking about how the art hasn't evolved have missed the point.
His record is nonsense. Everytime he sparred someone in the gym it went on his record as a win. As a pro, he fought guys that the paid losers have never even heard of. If I beat 600 guys from the bar with no experience would everyone be on my nuts telling me how great I am? Ricks always talks about he'd beat this guy and that guy, but when it's time to do it there's always excuses why the fight can't happen. He's just another fraud in a family of frauds. Rich, but still a fraud.
@Super8astard actually if you beat 600 guys in a bar yeah everyone would think your bad and be onb your nuts. It is pretty impressive espeially with all teh variables like bottles and stuff and bars.
@krnaxe I can see how any one who would beleive a guy claiming 600 bar fight wins would beleive a rich guy went 675,448,978,665,545,343,218,990-0 as a pro fighter, but still, they'd have to wonder what kind of people either guy fought against.
@karadan100 He is being honest. I don't think they were street fights. I would like to see a grappler take a kali master to the ground while he has a knife in his hand.
@Super8astard I agree but the world will never know. Fighting on concrete is different from fighting on mats. Last time a bjj fighter tried to take a kali master with a knife down it did not go well for the bjj fighter. No disrespect but just being honest.
@Arealmartialartist1 Not really, I find BJJ highly situational. It has a major role in combat sports, but as you pointed out, it's dangerous to oneself in the real world.
@Arealmartialartist1 Last time a kali master tried to defeat a navy seal he got shot in the head. Your compaing apple and oranges. I will agree with you a kali master with sticks and knives is very dangerous, but as far as wepeanless martial arts BJJ is one of the most efffective arts there is and I dare say that a kali master wtihout his sticks and knife would have a ugly timewith RIckson Gracie!
@xmanrules2001 Sorry bro I am talking about street fighting. You know street fighting where there is concrete, glass and dirty fighting. I am not talking about sport fighting with rules or rolling around on soft mats. Grew up in the streets of Baltimore Maryland. I don't care about sport fighting or rolling around on mats.
@Arealmartialartist1 Yea I am also talking about street fighting. But sometimes you cnat carry big ass knifes with you all the time fool. Also if someone is ontop of you pounding away good luck trying to grab something. Believe me Ive fought people in the streets so have alot of my friends adn Gracie Jiu jitsu allows you to pick where the fight goes. You forgot there are also guns in the streets. Its obvious you have never been in a real street figh.
@xmanrules2001 Sorry bro as I said before grew up in Baltimore MD. I am not some kid from the suburbs which you probably are. Trust me been in many street fights. You are a dumb as if you think rolling around on concrete is good for your body. Trained in Wing Chun, Judo, boxing and more. Don't believe in any styles. I am guessing you don't know anything about street because who said anything about big ass knifes? Tell me son do you know what a shank is?
@Arealmartialartist1 Hey buddy I am 48years old. I'm a former cop. I've done privated security. I used to manage some of the best clubs and strip clubs in LA and trained the security staff. Ive been put in the position to use what Ive learned which has allowed me to figure out what works best. As far as growing up in Baltimore i have no idea what that has to do with anything. I grew up in LA California. Obviously you believe in styles becuause you don't know believe in the effectivness in BJJ.
@xmanrules2001 Ok dude but you sound like an ass and I don't believe you. Do you have a facebook page? I can send you an invite. Oh one more thing I have done grappling matches and cage fighting and you will see that on my page. Go to facebook look up Javon ZenMaster Marable. Competed in my teens and early 20' but I focus mainly on the street. Don't care if you 48 I will still call you Son. And as I said before you probably from the suburbs. Tell me former officer, what is a shank?
@Arealmartialartist1 YEs my it's under Xavier Cabrera I a sent you a request. Dont be so closed minded is all im saying. I beleive a shank is knife. LOL
@xmanrules2001 I got a few friends who train bjj. I expressed my opinion and I never said it was not effective. I said it was certain things I would not do and I don't believe in Rickson's record.
@Arealmartialartist1 Yea his record is slightly bloated. Ok more than slightly. Yea mounting someone with shorts is not a good idea. I won that fight, but my knees were really scraped up. With pants your fine with shorts I would avoid it this time. Anyways I'd avoid fighting now anyways I'm getting too old for that kind of nonsense.
@Arealmartialartist1 My challenge to you is to visit a Renzo Gracie or his studio and see if what you do works. I've trained in Wing chun and I find it unrelaistic. There is a reason the military now has their soldiers training in BJJ. Also the LAPD LA Sheriffs dept and many other polilce departments doing BJJ not Kali wing chung because it works. Sometimes even if you don't want to roll on ther ground you have no choice.
@Arealmartialartist1 To go on with what I'm saying there are diffrent elements to street fightin. While Kali is fine martial art when it comes to street fighing with sticks and knives you still need to know your ground game. Is there a guarantee you win with just Gracie Jiu jitsu alone? No of course not there are no guarantees, but I assure you if a kali master has a knife and I have a gun i win, but it still dosen't invalidate kali. Quit being so close minded you might learn something.
Rickson is the best ground fighter ever known.......period. He will submit the best blackbelts in the world in under 5 minutes probably.
And ppl like Ricardo Arona and Fabio Gurgel, who testify to his unreal ground skills, Gurgel even saying he's being tapped all the time in practice, should tell you something about Rickson's skills.
As for his record, I believe it, I mean, it's not gonna be hard to win all those style vs. style when ur light-years ahead of others.
Plus a large part of his record was grappling fights, which, given his legendary reputation, doesn't surprise me if he went undefeated for that long. The Ron Tripp uchi mata doesn't really phase me as far as I'm concerned....Rickson is still the greatest grappler.
have respect for master rickson. remember that gracie jiujiitsu and groundfighting was put on the table to expose the limitations of the stand up striking game and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the groundfighting. groundfighter vs. striker not groundfighter vs. groundfighter .... master rickson gracie red and black belt the best ever.
lol @ all the johnny come latelys bad mouthing rickson. he was running over tough guys in brazil vale tudo while your momas were still cooking your meals and you were watching kung-fu theater and suckin on your juice boxes. i'm taking real nhb, not this glove-wearing, weight-class, rounds and time limits bs mma has become.
If Rickson really believes he can defeat Fedor he suffers from the same delusion his brother Royce did when he thought he could beat Matt Hughes and only embarrassed himself. Rickson in his prime couldn't beat Fedor, let alone at the age of 51. One sign that a former champion knows he cannot beat the current champion is when he is only willing to claim that he could still win without proving it. His boasting that he could beat Fedor in itself tarnishes his reputation.
@R4lfin4tor I don't remember where but I heard Royce saying that Hughes could be the winner. He, royce is the challenger in this fight. Royce said that before their fight.
I remember that because it is unsual to see a fighter talking like that.
@R4lf you said "Rickson in his prime couldn't beat Fedor, let alone at the age of 51" look , think of what you wrote. If Rickson would of fought Fedor when Rickson was in his prime Rickson would of choked his ass out, think about it who the fuck an where the fuck was Fedor. You did not know about Rickson then either, besides Ricardo Arona beat Fedor but was robbed.
Hey Dude, what you mean with ´noname´? I 1994, when ´Japan Open Vale Tudo´ was done, Rickson was there to fight. Who was there to figth against him? Did you want Fedor there? Rickson is 51 year old man, he is from another generation, and if we have MMA today, you have to thank him and Royce.
Gracie family kept the Ne-Waza from Kano-Ryu Ju-Jutso alive under BJJ, while olympic Ju-do killed it. So, please take it into account.
Tell me a video, or an interview which shows Rickson saying that he could beat Fedor, Rutten or Nog. I speak portuguese, and I aready saw several inverviews where he shows a great respect in regards to Nog. About Fedor, the only thing he said, is that in case of combat, Fedor would require much more technique to be defeated than Brock Lesnar. Rickson is from 80´s and 90´s generation man (Wand speaks too much, it is his style, but in UFC he did nothing).
Rickson told Tempos de Rio that Brock Lesnar is "impressive as an athlete. But he has holes in his game like anybody else. Technically, he is not as good as Fedor Emelianenko. It would take me longer to submit Fedor than it would him."
I believe you want to say Dave Meltzer said that Rickson said on Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Personally I did not believe he said it literally, based on what I listen from Rickson, I do believe the semantics of the statement had some other meaning. He clearly states about an hypotethica combat between he and Fedor, considering both in the same phisical level. And he is actually correct, Lesnar is technically poor if you compare with Fedor...
Additionaly, after UFC IV, the Grand Master Helio Gracie public advertised all of the Ju-jutso competitors to do not accept combats with time limit, limited number of rounds and rules to avoid full contact. In Helio´s mind, the Ju-jutso figthers can only exercise their techniques when the combat is similar to real combat. Guys like Rickson and Royce should never get in to combats with time limit. Watch Royce vs Dan Seven in the end of UFC IV and you will understand why.
Boy, Sakuraba was clearly underestimated by Gracie Family.
Sakuraba was a great fighter and he did to Gracie family what they desearved at that given time. Ju-Jutso/Ju-Do is like Life, one thay you are up, another day you are down. This is the Tao of Ju-jutso, this is the Tao of Ju-Do...
every fighter who has not been beaten in a very long time or is undefeated will always have an aura of being invincible and this plays to their advantage in every fight. confidence and the presence of fear ensues his opponent.
till they phase of defeat, that's when you know what they really are. a former champion or a legend.
the path to downfall occurs when evolution stops, if his game remains the same then there is a blueprint to defeat.
i dunno man ALDO is the man right now. a natural striker with the legit bjj blackbelt to back it up. that's going to be hard to stop. and that type of fighter seems to be on the mainstream lately. (examples anderson, machida, bj penn, fedor)
but if there's anyone that's gonna put out a hurting against him. it's got to be faber.
truee. well machidas ground is so so. but yeah brown out muscled faber. i dont see aldo doin that to him. aldos one tough dude but if faber fights a classic faber fight i think aldos got nothin on him. now if faber does lose then damn aldos gonna own that division for a longgg time
examples of fighters who have evolved and have dominated the fight scene after defeat, through the evolution of their game after defeat.
1.) GSP
2.) Penn
3.) Anderson silva (although still undefeated in the UFC)
4.) nate marquardt (after his defeat by the spider he has dramatically enhanced his game to a whole new level and i think will become a future UFC champion)
5.) vitor belfort
6.) randy couture
7.)brock lesnar (the mother fucker has improved dramatically after defeat.)
To understand what I mean, watch youtube video inxxJcwVWy8. You will see what Rickson thinks about Ju-jutso, and Fedor.
By the way, I really think there is one guy wich will be able to beat Fedor IF (and only IF) he keeps evolving his style: Lyoto Machida. In his shotokan practice, Lyoto developed a very good TAI-SABAKI, wonderful MA-AI, accurate KYO. These are the keys to defeat Fedor and Lesnar, however it can not be easily done under time limit. Best Regards
Machida is a quite good fighter, perhaps he will stay unbeaten, but he is in the light-heavyweight class and Fedor is heavyweight. Machida first has to grow his mass what will make him changing his style a little bit and then we would see how good he can adapt.
Rickson, you are awesome dude! I miss training with you, and I miss the long conversations. The friendship will last forever my teacher!
