I think the “woe is me” black blues music in background makes no sense within the context of this video. As I recall the relationship between Europeans and Africans in 1960s Northern Rhodesia was cordial. Africans lined up to work for Europeans as domestic servants and in the mines. There was only ever a maximum of 75,000 Europeans in NR (2/3 were women and children). Our servants cried when we left for South West Africa. It was back to bush and poverty for them and they knew it
We lived there until 1979 when we moved to Ontario, Canada. We also knew the Coopers who ran Fixit. If we had been made welcome we would have stayed and continued to work hard and bring our children up as Zambians and enrich the country but it was made quite clear to us at the time that we were not welcome because we were white and as a result could never become Zambian. Luckily Canada welcomed us as it did other Africans of all colours.
We had a similar experience. We were given 24 hours to get out of the country because of the fact that we went to SA for a while and then came back to Zambia. My father grew up in Zambia in fact when it was still Northern Rhodesia. We lost everything after my father was arrested for 2 weeks, treated like an animal while he was imprisoned and then kicked us as a young family out of the country.. My grandparents helped the black people for years previously.
thank you so much for this video it brings back the best memories of my life I grew up in Chingola from 4yrs old until I was 12 best childhood anyone could wish for Those were the days !! it makes me cry when I see this video
Its nice to see that my video is bringing back old friends for you. I also have some of my best memories there as a small child in the sixties. unfortunatley I was too young to remember peoples names. cheers
Sorry folks - these mines destroyed Zambia. Mining is not nostalgic and wonderful - too many black Southern African families have paid the price of mining through death, displacement, cancers and broken families. The mining companies and some few elites take all the money and claim they are benefiting the economy. Do the math, the economies bread only inequality, poverty and death. The long result is environmental disaster.
@cassava99 I recall Africans lining up for jobs as servants and in the mines... an African with a job on the mines was a man of substance... Copper was waht created Northern Rhodesia and Zambia.. when we left Kitwe for South West our servants were weeping as if they were at a funeral which in some ways they were... back to bush or poverty of urban Kitwe...
Its nice to see other people share similar feelings towards Chingola. I lived there from 1959 to 1963 as a youngster, we came back to Zambia a year later and were forced to leave after a year unfortunatley. I have vague but fond memories of the country being that I was so young. Iam so glad that it has not developed and changed like the rest of the world so that when I do go back one day to visit I will see it as it was when I were a young child. Thanks for your comment.
Hi! ZEITGEISTism, I dont think that is a catholic church as my Dad took this film and I am sure there are some of my relatives etc coming out of the church which was baptist i think. The town hasn't changed one bit. It is exactly the same today as it was then - nothing added. Fond memories of a great country. The music complements the video.
