Canvas kayaks, overloaded, on an ice-filled Nordvestfjord, with nowhere to go if the brash ice closed in. The walk over the col to Erzberg was the first -- and only -- time I have ever collapsed from sheer exhaustion, after wading through knee-deep slush around the firn line. The music? Karl Jenkins -- Benedictus. Very appropriate!
