generally this is because people set up their 360's on their sides not their bottoms... while this may look cool, when a game is playing it is spinning very rapidly and any minor vibration around it say a bump to the setup holdin it or if it's on the ground even just walking to close to it can cause the games to get scratched beyond playability.
