  • GOOD

  • awsome song , i want this played at my funeral.

  • You can find the chanting by Difang and Igay on Itunes. Its on thier album Circle of Life, The song is called "Elders Drinking Song"

They also have another album called "Across the Yellow Earth"

Hope that helps those who want to listen to it.

  • the incidenital music is singing by who???

  • The Amis tribe from Taiwan

  • ), part of the French Ministère de L'éducation Nationale &put onto an "anonymous" compilation of "Taiwanese aboriginal songs". The French government then sold the recording, again without permission or public announcement, to EMI. EMI allowed Enigma to use the recording as a sample track for their song. So, promoting world culture, huh.But hopefully things changed since the 80s...I'd like to find Duanas' version, too.I hate it how everyone thinks it's Enigma's composition.

  • In 1988 Difang and Igay went to France to sing on a tour. They and roughly 30 other aboriginal Taiwanese artists were paid $15 a day for this privilege. Their performances were recorded without their knowledge by the Maison des Cultures du Monde (Institute for World Cultures).

  • Too bad Enigma doesn't know how to credit anyone...oh, well, they had to give to the Amis of Taiwan, so it ended well.

    Rest in peace, Difang.

  • Does anyone know how to get to listen to the original version of the chorus?

  • There is a CD called "Circle of Life" by the people who produced Deep Forest. Basically, you're looking for:

Difang & Igay Duana (郭英男 & 郭秀珠) - Circle of Life

**Probably, you only need to look up Difang...but this CD is hard to find, you'd have much more luck getting it in Taiwan (or having a Taiwanese friend get it for you...maybe check Ebay).

  • It's from 1998. This song is from 1994. I read that the song this samples for is from 1988.

  • You won't find the original sample, but he recorded it without instruments for the album I listed above...the same song, called the "Elder's Song" (also known under a few other names).

  • How did Cretu get to know the original version?

  • Taiwanese Aboriginal is good...!

  • Original version by Difang Duana from Taiwanese Aboriginal.

  • finally finally! I have been looking for this for ages! Thanks a lot for posting. I came across this melody once some years ago and then the melody seemed implanted in my mind -- simply can not chase away. Now I got it save in my fav... disregard the name some Taiwanese call themselves, I love this music and I believe this is typically Taiwanese --nothing to do with Holland.

  • It is true, pure, Taiwanese, actually, it is the aboriginal in Taiwan..

  • which is true Taiwanese, as you pointed out.

    Love Taiwan.

  • thank you.

A na da mo, Gan ba re.

  • if only they let Difang sing the whole thing... that's some fucked up english lyrics >.>

  • I agree. At least the 1st verse.

  • Awesome!!! Sound from the heaven...

  • @mthsu

  • TAIWAN GO!!!

  • Those who say Formosa as slave name is not only stupid but disgusting.

God bless Taiwan, Ilha Formosa--the beautiful island.

  • wonderful song nice singer

    nice voice from Taiwanese native

    love Taiwan love others kind

  • Let's pray for Taiwan for being free of those red asses~

  • Wow, if the ami weren't credited for their contribution, we'd never know the origins of the song and the meaning behind it. Big music companies suing youtube for copyright infringement? Perhaps it isn't to much to ask them to look at themselves first.

  • I think its only right if you credit someone when you use their work, especially if the chanting part makes up 50% of the entire song. the male aborigine singer's voice is etheral and strong. Haunting indeed.

There were articles that the chant is from the tribe's "Jubilant drinking song" which is sung with friends in celebration. Because the tribe lives near the sea, the chant moves like waves breaking against the sea rock.

  • I remember that the singer's name was Knu something... and was in his 70's at the time. But, I dunno. I haven't looked really deep into the subject. I just know that it explains why I don't like Enigma's other songs! And has opened a whole new world.. of Taiwan. Whoo!

  • I remember the singer having another name... Knu something... In his late 70's at the time, not sure how long ago... Anyway. This song means more to me since I learned where the chanting came from. Opens up a whole new world! It also explains why I dislike other Enigma songs, since the chanting isn't even theirs.

  • Yes, Enigma borrows a lot from other works. So is this Difang Duana character supposed to be the chanter at the beginning or the soloist? Cause I thought it was said he's the soloist. I remember he was listed as 'Angel' in the CD cover paper.

They both sound nice, but I think the soloist has a truly amazing voice :) kinda girlish too :P

  • I have no idea who Difang Duana is... I have learned that it was Kuo Ying-nan and Kuo Hsiu-chu who did all the chanting, and that their song was pretty much stolen by Enigma.

  • Enigma borrows under permission, or so they say. I wouldn't think they'd get away with so much use of popular material if they didn't get permission.

  • The thing with the chanting was that it wasn't popular. *scratches head* It's now like there's 2 sources for it, which is very confusing. Searching on Google "enigma return to innocence court" I can find information on how they were sued for using the chanting without premission. That it was sampled. Hm. Maybe they had someone else chant it, or something.

  • heh wow...this um...brings out a whole new face of Enigma. And they always seemed so innocent to me. Methinks I should look into this more.

  • I read some things quick, so deeper research would probably be needed to fully understand. Maybe I should go back and try to read up again XD

  • Hardly anyone(including me) knew the original version.

  • Difang Duana = Kuo Ying-nan

    Igay Duana = Kuo Hsiu-chu

Many Aborigines have adopted Chinese names to avoid discrimination.

When was the last time you met a Native America with name like "Cloud in the Wind"?

  • wow. interesting discovery!

I will be in Taiwan this September..cant wait!

  • Ilha Formosa! i love taiwan! wink :)
