ive had the ipod 2G for 3 years and its still in good shape, it lags alot though but the scratches are minimal. ive dropped it many times and there are hardly any dents. the only put down is the slow processor and low quality screen.

I agree with the scracthes on iPods, I have an iPod Video 80GB from 2006 and it haves some scratches but it's in much better shape than my friend's iPod Touch 2G, which haves dents heavy scratches and cracked screen as my iPod only haves heavy scratches but it's much older than my friend's iPod Touch

@Firebolt773 They don't scratch very easily (well in comparison to all my other Android phones). My iPod Touch 3G is very old and has not one scratch on it and the same with my iPhone 4S. They only scratch if you shove it in with keys in your pocket and your running.

iPod touch 4G loads faster because there's less module for it to load. For example, GPS, 3G, and maybe Proximity Sensor. I personally don't think that the number of application you've installed will affect performance, since they don't install background process, unless they're jailbroken.
