  • Thanx for the thought, very much appreciated . One of my favourite JM song

  • genius or not he was still a alcoholic wife beater...

  • @django1889 a dead alcoholic wife beater who has given me and many others so so much. If you are jesus then forgive me but if not take a long hard look at yourself my friend.Respect others in life and death....

  • @django1889 What business is that of yours or any of us for that matter?

  • @django1889

To your comment on John's personal life, I will respond with what my wise old grandfather told me years ago, as he lay dying from TB:"Before you die, strive to create at least one thing of lasting beauty or importance that will touch the lives of as many folks as is humanly possible. If you can do that, the world will remember THAT about you, and any acts of human stupidity won't matter in the scheme of things. (cont.)

  • (cont.) "And when folks approach your family to sing your praises after you're gone, if your family have any common sense whatsoever you can be damn sure they WON'T recall the stupidity you also committed, because they will be too damn proud of you!" I reckon Grandpa was RIGHT all these years later, and I will bet good money that when folks approach John's family nowadays to tell them what John's music means to them the last thing on their mind at that moment is his drinking and temper, period.

  • Just touches my heart ! R.I.P. John

  • Great upload. Cheers!

  • Saw him a few times in Glasgow, shared a joint and had a pint with him, a true gent and genius, Danny is off the scale also, just glad I seen him live!

  • Thanks bro. Keep them coming.

  • Saw him many times, but I enjoyed him best at small venues, like a night when he stopped playing, and asked the crowd for a joint, it obviously arrived! Was lit, and with a smiling nod of approval, he broke into 'Solid air'.... times like that will never be forgotten.. Top man.

  • Ditto to all the above, excellent upload. Dues due, if you like, to the amazing Danny Thompson (Pentangle) looking very young there on the double bass.

  • I really dig this. it is a type of Fusion,as if a hippie folk singer somehow met Marvin Gaye. John Martyn seemed to have had the ability to draw on many different types of music and let himself be inspired by the best. A very talented artist indeed and sad that he's now departed.

  • That is a perfect description of his music. I'd never quite thought about it that way. As for those who hate him, they probably like head banger or punk or some polar opposite kind of music. Good for them that they actually have an opinion. They're just wrong, that's all.

  • Can anyone tell me why this man so split opinion. Apparently some people couldn't even bear hearing his name mentioned they hated him so much and others like the one and only Danny Thompson (I think playing upright bass here) obviously loved him in spite of his very temperamental nature. I'm genuinely curious to know why?

  • dark mother f##ker

  • How comes i never herd of this man! he is a legend! i love the dealer! i want every thing hes done !! arrgh!. thanks so much for sharing xx

  • many thx for uploading.

  • Even errors are perfection, how can that be?....I will never dislike this as long as there is breath in my body.

  • agreed,he was magic.

  • yes genius no doubt

  • to be dead drunk on the floor

get up and ask for more

    the man is a legend

  • absolute brilliance !! R.I.P no1

  • The sound of this video is tattooed on the inside of my ear drums ive watched it so many times

  • It clearly speaks for itself, simply beautiful. Rare to discover such open heart surgery captured live in a musical form.

  • how did he die? i didn't know and i am quite sad.

  • @daisypeachy he died of double phenomenia.

  • Beautiful. Pure genius.

  • yeah yeah yeah man... me & my girlfriend got to see him @ The Paradiso in Amsterdam in 1990... beautiful... did a twenty something minute version of Solid Air.... will neva forget that gig... R.I.P Johnboi....thanx for the music dude

  • The cause of his death was a double pneumonia.

I also heard it only now.

    A great musician.

I loved his music, his kind to play and his singing and not least his compositions.

I´ve also a lot of memories with this music ...

  • what caused his death? didn't even notice it :( sad thing to hear...

  • @deepenough2die He had double pneumonia. I couldn't believe it when I heard.

If I can't be a peaceful man, I will be who I can

If I can't get everything I want, I'll just get what I can

I was alright before I walked out the door

    I was alright inside

But outside I had to look again, again, again...

    Beautiful.

  • Music that will last forever.

  • Fantastic. So many great memories.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • Why not? is it bullshit? get over it then and count your lucky stars

  • haha Great song this is defo one of my favorites :)

I still cant belive i got to see John before he died.

  • I've never heard of this guy until now.

He is probably one of my new favorite artists. I love this.

  • Im glad young people are discovering this great genius who sadly passed away last January !

  • @AcousticMinja Welcome to a very privileged group!

  • a master and missed

  • How great this man was...I loved him so much...

  • (Reads vid description)

Its definately more than a few Waggonerslad :P

  • One of my favourite Martyn songs. The lyrics really hit home for me. Don't know if that's a good or bad thing!

  • the look he gives the camera after the first line is fantastic! pure JM!

    R.I.P. big man...

  • probably the best song by the best singer/songwriter. i will forever miss john martyn he was amasing RIP big man

if i cant get what bi want i'll get what i can!

    genius

  • my favourite is small hours. i dont see why no one else thinks its as great as I do. He is so ahead of his time with that song, ironic as the best music is usually in the past

  • how is that ironic? and also, its because it has time to spread and people can discover it better, their is plenty of amazing music out now that barely anyone knows of

  • @eqios my understanding of ironic: the reality is different to what you expect. His music is extremely advanced for his time (implying that in the future(post 1980's) music will be more advanced) while in fact the reality of it is, is that songs from the past are more complex and 'advanced'

  • @happyhour2624

It's definitely one of the best songs of his out there.

  • @happyhour2624 I think you'll find a lot of people are in agreement with you. Have a look at how many views it's had. I suspect it may well have influenced my favourite guitarist; Vini Reilly of The Durutti Column non-fame! Martyn and Reilly two of the most criminally underrated guitarists and song writers of all. unfortunately for poor Vini, the man just can't sing!

  • just beautiful, and a soundtrack to my freehwheeling life

    what a waste.....

  • a waste?... what.. your freewheeling life or John Martyn?

Your life sounds geat. Try not to worry about it.

    Cheers!

    A

    Here to help!

  • Thanks alien. It was a little late in the day when I wrote that, and my life is great !

    G

  • Good news! I was a litle concerned.

    :-)

K, back to the matter in hand. I wonder if JM hadn't had pushed the bounderies so much in all aspects of his life, we'd still have the same music in his memory.

Gutted i'll never see him life though.. and that is a shame.

    Keep the faith.

    Cheers.

    A

  • Legend! True Legend!

    RIP John

  • The last time I saw JM at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, he posed the question, "How do you know you've had a Deadhead as a visitor???? They're still there."

Bless the weather for John Martyn. R.I.P. forever.

  • he took his life on

    i saw him in uk

    one leg

    an all

    he could do it still

    still as tress

    thoses r thoses

  • He was 25 at the time and what a great album this is from. That era produced some wild talent. He still had his best years ahead of him. Pity this isn't included on the Live at the BBC dvd. I'd watch it all night!

  • thanks! i've never seen this one before and i doubt i ever would have if you hadn't bothered uploading to youtube. this is what it is all about!

  • Absolutely. You're very welcome.

  • to be dead drunk on the floor .. christ I've been there brother

    RIP

  • an get up to ask for more

  • i love j martyn...does anybody knows the guitar model he's playing? maybe a martin d 28...i don't know... thanks.

  • Yep thats a d-28

  • Thanks a lot. I love the sound specially in J. Martyn or S. Stills hands but too expensive and too big size for me.

  • Like an arrow through your heart. Too cute he was then. I was all of 12...

  • I met John on several occasion because my sister Pat Elliot-Shircore ran the Hanging Lamp folk club in Richmond (The Vineyard). What a guy!

  • did you buy him a drink ??

  • I've just learnt of the tragic loss of this truly inspiring musician. RIP John Martyn & thanks for the trips into your soul.

  • Saw him perform many times live - always a moving experience. Only Van the Man comes close.

God bless ya John - peace at last for the big man!

  • thanks man...my favourite tune

  • R.I.P

  • your right the man was gorgeous simply gorgeous, that look at 0.25..and to sound like that too..listening to him is like taking an arrow through the heart..

  • Mmmmmm - if I could time travel I know where I'd go!!!!!

  • He was absolutely beautiful. That look at 0:25.. wow.

  • My favorite part about the journey home to Ireland was passing through Thomas Town an route from Dublin to Waterford. Just passing through the town where he lived was enough to remind you you're in the presence of greatness. I would look for his face outside every bar. Never got the chance to buy him that drink I always wanted to... RIP John

See the BBC documentary 'Johnny Too Bad' if you haven't already.

  • BEAUTIFUL.

one of my favourite John martyn songs ever.

    RIP

  • Once bought John a triple vodka up on stage in Galway.

Gonna miss not ever being able to see and feel your power up so close again John.

    Love You Man!!!!!!! Sean XXX

  • Pure. Hearing these OGWT sounds is wrenching.

I loved JM -- saw him live 30+ years ago and still listen to Inside out and Solid Air on old old cassettes.... RIP

  • those cassettes are cool

    sweet as it goes

  • I have only heard of this guy today, i really really like him music!!! This is amazing

Can anyone recomend any of his records to me?

  • This song "Make No Mistake" was originallty on his great album _Inside Out_, which is my very favorite. It isn't perhaps to everyone's taste, it is maybe the most jazz- or experimental- oriented... He was a magnifcent singer as well as a great guitar player!

  • Look for the video of 'May you never' from the same OGWT session in 1973. It's brilliant! RIP JM.

  • You Tube Spencer The Rover The best video on YT

  • Gladly. I'd recommend you check out Solid Air, Bless the Weather, Sunday's Child, On the Cobbles, Grace and Danger to name a few of my favourites. Start with Solid Air though, it is his most famous recording and there's a reason for it.

  • Thanks man!!!!! Will do...i checked out solid air and its just mind blowing so ive decided to go through every single thing to do with this wonderful man has done!!!!

  • sorry that makes no sense but you know what i mean...

  • john martyn's music gives the most souly blues jazzy folky feeling you can hope to experience

  • I see John in Rome in the middle 80' , great concert. He was one of the few that have seen Nick Drake as a genius, dedicated to him His masterpiece "Solid Air" . Great John !

  • From Coventry folk club in the late 60's to Beverley Playhouse a couple of years ago. loved the music, May you lay your head down John

  • Thanks for this waggonerslad. Many happy times had at his concerts and listening to his albums.

  • R.I.P - a true inspiration to much of the great guitar players through the past 30 or so years.

  • Make no mistake I loved this guy and his music.

    RIP

  • I think he was at his best at this time, there is so little of him available live many thanks.

  • First time I saw him live was Glastonbury 1986 (Radio one live in concert CD was recorded there) and he was brilliant. Last time I saw him was on the sunshine boys tour with Danny Thompson. Once again he was brilliant.

  • Blast from the past. Hey does anyone have his cover of "somewhere over the rainbow" almost as good as IZ's, in fact on par but different. If someone could post it... I'd be greatful. Cheers

  • i was named after this guy...

  • I envy you.

  • what ... bobby ??????????

  • no john martyn

  • I reccon Bobby Star had some good hits. the lingering tilt of the voice singing 'Kassiopi' is surely unforgetable. others too many to mention are the common standard Star songbook. Equalled by many, craven by few. Bobby had the gold

  • I never knew Bobby Star was anything real.

    Just searched his sounds shit.

RIP - Still, his name will live on through me.

  • hey peace i knew it was coming

all life sounds shit when your dead

    are you listening

    Take me back

  • Your not the only one Jenisonc I'm still in high school and I love John Martyn, I love most music from this era but I was born far too late.

  • John Martyn - probably the most underrated singer/songwriter/musician Britain has ever produced. An absolutely phenomenal, towering talent.

  • I totally agree with you!

John Martyn is a singer/musician to die for. And Solid Air a timeless gem.

  • Damn! Why am I the only person who loves John Martyn as much as all of you but I wasn't Old enough to see him like this. Thats not fair.

    I envy you all.

Ps. I love him now but 1977-87 wow.

  • God, i love this song! John Martyn is such a performer! I saw him live in Liverpool on his "final" tour, amazing musician!

  • The man is god, that's all there is to say really. I've been there since I was 14 yrs old, 35yrs in total and he still makes me weep!!

  • Everything is beautiful here: John, his voice, his guitar, this song, Danny Thompson style...

    Thanks a lot Waggonerslad!

  • so beautiful...

    thanks

  • Thanks very much

  • If only Danny's bass sounded better...still fine though in my ears tonight.

  • He's one of my favorite artists

  • Another classic ...

The guy has no limits when it comes down to a live performance ...

  • I'm listening to this a hundred times a day. I wish the sound quality was better. Would really appreciate a better rip of this!! John is worth it!

  • Came from a VHS tape. I doubt this clip has ever been released on DVD.

  • Oh ok! You still rock though, just putting it out there, thanks again.

  • He's got one of the sweetest and most creative voices in rock history and this is one of his vocal masterpieces; legendary singer-songwriter!!!!

  • That look at the camera speaks volumes. Genius at work.

  • This is the best song i have ever heard, its been in my head for months, i fluked upon john martyn through youtube, such a talented song writer, and now a major influence in my song writing, i wish i grew up in the 70's so i could have seen him when he was young and rad

  • ARISE SIR JOHN .....sometime the world will catch up and recognise you'r musical genius and vision

  • saw John and Danny at Glasgow and it blew my mind....about 2001

  • That I love J. Martin, is an understatement. The epitome of what guitar /voice should sound like...when I was around 20, biy , did I make love on this vinyl!!! Boy, I mis JM.

  • Classic John Martyn slurred vocals, exquisite acoustic guitar with the main man Danny Thompson on bass. Nice one.

  • thank you waggonerslad, lovely stuff. TOGWT...what a show!

  • thank's bud ....

i'm still looking for " only you " john martyn covered it and, i know portishead covered it too ...i've got it on one of my live cd's but he was a little drunk at the time ...

  • I don't know that one at all. I know he's done a brilliant cover of "glory box" by Portishead but that's all.

  • wow, i love him
