Bismillah Khan was the name of this great musician. He was born in Dumraon, trained at Darbhanga and moved to Varanasi at a rather young age where he stayed till his end. He was the best Shehnai exponent ever. This humble instrument was hardly considered a classical instrument till Bismillah Khan raised the level.

His best was when he would perform near the Vishwanath temple at Varanasi. He was a true representative of the great secular tradition of India.

Bismillah Khan died in poverty. In his last days the government gave him a few lakh rupees to survive. I have read he did not care much about money while giving concerts.

I met Ustad Bismillah Khan in Atlanta in the late 80's when he was on tour. I approached him near the stage and he was wea Gray color Nehru Jacket.
