Do any guitarists out there know why, for example at :27, why Carl and Al would fret the F chord with their thumb on the low E rather than the standard index finger barring the whole fret? What is the advantage? I notice they did this a lot, in fact I don't think I ever see them use the 'Mel Bay' form. Is this maybe just the way they were taught?
@abata15 The advantage is that it will play a Fmaj7 chord, leaving the last string open on an E, and the first on an F, which gives a more prettier, delightful sound than barring the whole fret. That's just from me though, I prefer playing fm7 more than a plain F chord, and I could see why they do it as well. :p
@HangTenHangmen I don't know, though I don't see how they couldn't slow the recorded track down or speed it up if necessary before broadcast to match the tempo of the actual performance. While it might be possible that they ARE in fact lip-syncing, I don't much care to think they would. :D
@PacRimJim Odds are they went in after the show was recorded and dubbed the album version over their performance. It's not that they're lip-synching per se, they really did the song live, it's just been overdubbed after the fact.
@translatorjoe Isn't it more likely that they just played the record while the Beach Boys lip sync'd along with it? If they dubbed it in afterwards, it wouldn't be the same tempo as the performance.
music is God's language and Brian Wilson had an ear for translating it for the rest of us. Some of our finest musicians, actors, artists etc. suffer from mental illness. A very challenging question......
Anyone who automatically calls Mike names is not a real fan, and is just parroting what they have read. He had his faults, so did Brian. I'll even add that I find his personality in interviews unpleasant.
But people treat him like Beatles fans talk about Yoko Ono. I wish this trend would end.
This is great! But why is BW lip-syncing the lead vocals? It's really doesn't sound him on the studio track, it sounds more like Dennis. On my channel. I put up a studio take of this song with Mike on all lead vocals.
@Jonee90210 Because Brian sings the lead vocal on the studio cut. He manages to sound both like Dennis and Carl at it, but it IS him singing it. Having a band filled with family members is funny like that.
@kielego Sir, this is from the BB's appearance in 1965, on Shindig, a TV show that features rock stars of the day. This IS BW singing & Mike on chorus --I know, I know, say what you will, but Mike has a great bass voice, & he & BW made many fine duets together. This is one of the best. A vocal masterpiece. Wolfsky9, 65 y/o
to me it sounds like playback is going, yet brian's vocals are still live. So while the song is playing w/vocal track. He's also singing on top of it. cause there's an extra voice singing with the song.
This is odd. I thought Brian sang the "If I'm who you're dreaming of" part. Yet his lips are showing him to be singing "Please let me wonder" with the rest of the group. What's happening?
@madahpesojnothgual Here is an answer, but may not be THE answer: The BB are obviously lip-syncing here. On the recording BW sang both parts. I suggest that he simply 'forgot' to mouth the back fill lyrics due to stagefright or some other distraction.
@madahpesojnothgual actually listen close to the album recording. It's mike who sings the "if i've been the one you love, if i'm who you're dreaming of" parts.
IN one of the Doonesbury cartoon strips, one of the characters is on his deathbed, dying of Aids, and someone gives him Pet Sounds on CD (when cd's had just come out)..his last dying words were "Brian Wilson is God!"..then he dies happily...meanwhile, Brian Wilson said "Music is God's Voice"...i couldnt agree more, brian is a genius!!!!
I saw this, & was just so knocked out. What as voice he had--BW's was like no one--ever. He could sing anything. And the harmonies! Spring, '65. Wolfsky9
Lip Synced...too bad they didn't play this live for real.

@PacificRunaway Thanks! That makes good sense. I'm going to have to work on getting that stretch so I can sound the proper strings.

Dennis doesn't even try to play the drum part. Maybe that's the price of lip-synching.

Thank God that Brian was singing the lead instead of Mikey. This was one of the songs which gave us a taste of what was to come on Pet Sounds.
