  • does anyone know what kind of chords those are at 2:45 ? Minor sevenths?

  • the way he thought about it at the beginning was almost disturbing, to think what amazing shit is going through his mind in those few seconds.

  • what doc is this from?

  • @thadrazdow It's from "Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue"

  • herbie+rhodes+moogerfooger=slow humping magic

  • I wish some one would record some Liszt or Chopin,on the lovely Fender Rhodes, This is great

  • Sounds more like, Herbie Hancock on Chic Corea.

  • @TheAxis456 sounds more like you don't know what you're talking about

  • @ChungFat4eva Really? I don't? Do you even know who Chick Corea is?

  • ha why is he playing in an office chair? haha prolly hella awkward to play in

  • One deaf people didn't like this because it wants to listen and it couldn't

  • @alerciliano i'm suffering from an hearing disorder who has the same consequence than being deaf = i can't listen to any music since 2009 (and before that from 1995 to 1999) but i still record piano music even without hearing my playing, (you can check my channel for this),i was a pianist when i was 20 years old and i killed my hearing and my life while playing Cantaloup island on a stage with some stupid musicians who put their amp at max volume and .. i just clicked on "i like" !.

  • bitches brew

  • people complaining about the noise of his sleeves rubbing against each other, the sound of his fingers on the keys and...the squeakiness of his chair. come on.

  • wait... does anyone else understand the first comment?

  • Creative

  • Very beautiful!

True artist, tender notes, nice spaces timing.

  • who else read "milf" in 2:30??

  • The sound of the mallets is always so sweet :)

  • herbie like a surgeon

  • Can anyone tell me what processor has Herbie on top of the Rhodes ?

  • @fingers1971

That's one of the MoogerFooger effects, I'm pretty sure. Don't know which one.

  • @AFiestOfFriends

    Yes it is! : )

Thanks for your comment. I have seen Mr. Medeski (from MMW) having this kind of stuff on top on his Hammond/Clavinet setup and I was wondering what it was. Now I know: Ring Modulators and so on, but still don't know how they use it really, or if they use a pre-configured setup for these vintage keyboards.

  • Oh man, this makes me wanna go back and re listen to Sorcerer & Bitches Brew. Those early fusion records were UNREAL.

  • @markmarktarmann hey, wenn dann Scheiße^^

  • It sounds like he's wearing a clip on microphone on his jacket or something, for a interview segment or something. They need to turn it off during this part, because you can hear his hands flicking on the keys and his jacket rubbing on his sleeves, etc.

  • NIE MA CO TEGO SŁUCHAC-Z TYM SIE RODZIMY

  • Everybody relax. It's fucking HERBIE HANCOCK. Jesus...

  • @WRavalJazz haha :)

  • i hear mad bitches brew motif...this almost seems beyond human comprehension ...

  • @SoundElectroJazz The point I see is, I'm pretty sure Herbie would make even a kiddie toy piano sound interesting. And it's always about context / taste - there ought to be many occasions where the sound of the Mk I works better than the Mk II, and vice-versa.

  • @SoundElectroJazz YOU COMMENT AND THIS VIDEO HAS SOME RELATIONSHIP.. OR SO I FELT

  • He really does such a great job of building so much tension throughout, then just releases it quite casually near the very end.

  • all live music done in one take has minor flaws or ..mistakes thats live music for you! thats what makes it different in every performance, or you might throw something extra in it

  • @WELLBRAN the flaws and the extra stuff are what make it interesting :D

  • Yep, Thats Miles :D

  • Haunting.....beautiful.....mysterious.....eclectic. Damn good keyboard work Mr. Hancock. I believe Mr. Miles Davis would have loved it.......

  • This makes me what to say screw electric keyboards. Give me acoustic any day. But of course Herbie is King. But I would much rather have heard this on an acoustic. Except for Red Clay.

  • cool

  • this sound is just so realistic

  • about miles davis

  • plus his chair is really squeaky

  • what's obvious about you people, is that you find it easier to understand the engineer's work and the instruments flaws than THE MUSIC ITSELF (AND THE PLAYER OF COURSE).....

  • Why is everyone so obsessed with the rhodes?! HE'S HERBIE HANCOCK! If he wanted a mint rhodes to play, he could have gotten one. Maybe this rhodes has some significance to him or some story. Everyone talks as if they know something! Bah! Listen to the music!

  • they should have had a mic on that speaker... is sounds like the camera mic. what?

  • @tyleryesta1 Yes, extremely poor engineering here.

  • I confess I hadn't noticed any of the flaws that you keyboard-tech-savvy people mentioned, And to be honest, I really don't know shit about any of it.

Still, to me, this is truly a case of performance intensity rendering crappy backline issues meaningless. :)

  • @johnnywellas sir, you get it. end of story.

  • @johnnywellas whats a backline issue? :)

  • @johnnywellas Went from "Call it anything" to this and saw your comment :)

    You're right

  • this rhodes is a disgrace for herbie hancock. still, the great imperfection has a certain vibe that i like

  • @piellekes No, it was the engineer's poor mic'ing technique. There should have been a pair of ribbon mics in front of the camera. Instead they were mic'ing the whole soundstage with one stereo pair, thus picking up every little sound in the room.

  • There is something charming about a beat up rhodes, but yes; if you get Herbie Hancock to come and play the rhodes, make sure it's a good one.

  • Hancock made it sound goooooood...

  • The guy who choose this remarkable Mark 2 to be played on by Herbie is a hilarious phenomenon.

  • @FenderRhodesService I second that comment. This Rhodes is horrible - you can also hear from the way he is striking the keys that he felt the action was dead straight away. The gaffa tape all up the side of the speaker cab is a nice touch too. What a waste - Herbie plays an improvisation that could have been incredible, but sadly he is provided with a thoroughly uninspiring instrument.

  • @tomogradymusic It's not the rhodes, it's the poor mic'ing technique from an engineer that most likely is used to mic'ing interviews, not electric instruments. If you see the actual video this is from, it's obvious that the sound quality for the interviews in this white sound stage is fantastic. For an electric instrument, you want to close mic the speaker to eliminate extraneous noise.

  • @johanivanovic It *is* the Rhodes - a lot of notes are dead in timbre and it's not evenly voiced. Check out Herbie having to restrike the B flat octave with his left hand at 1:46. He did that because the piano didn't respond.

This has nothing to do with how well it's mic'd or not - I've recorded mine by mic'ing the cabinet and by using the amplifier outs.

  • this is amazingly fantastic ...

  • Herbie+Rhodes = magic
