@alerciliano i'm suffering from an hearing disorder who has the same consequence than being deaf = i can't listen to any music since 2009 (and before that from 1995 to 1999) but i still record piano music even without hearing my playing, (you can check my channel for this),i was a pianist when i was 20 years old and i killed my hearing and my life while playing Cantaloup island on a stage with some stupid musicians who put their amp at max volume and .. i just clicked on "i like" !.
people complaining about the noise of his sleeves rubbing against each other, the sound of his fingers on the keys and...the squeakiness of his chair. come on.
Thanks for your comment. I have seen Mr. Medeski (from MMW) having this kind of stuff on top on his Hammond/Clavinet setup and I was wondering what it was. Now I know: Ring Modulators and so on, but still don't know how they use it really, or if they use a pre-configured setup for these vintage keyboards.
It sounds like he's wearing a clip on microphone on his jacket or something, for a interview segment or something. They need to turn it off during this part, because you can hear his hands flicking on the keys and his jacket rubbing on his sleeves, etc.
@SoundElectroJazz The point I see is, I'm pretty sure Herbie would make even a kiddie toy piano sound interesting. And it's always about context / taste - there ought to be many occasions where the sound of the Mk I works better than the Mk II, and vice-versa.
all live music done in one take has minor flaws or ..mistakes thats live music for you! thats what makes it different in every performance, or you might throw something extra in it
This makes me what to say screw electric keyboards. Give me acoustic any day. But of course Herbie is King. But I would much rather have heard this on an acoustic. Except for Red Clay.
what's obvious about you people, is that you find it easier to understand the engineer's work and the instruments flaws than THE MUSIC ITSELF (AND THE PLAYER OF COURSE).....
Why is everyone so obsessed with the rhodes?! HE'S HERBIE HANCOCK! If he wanted a mint rhodes to play, he could have gotten one. Maybe this rhodes has some significance to him or some story. Everyone talks as if they know something! Bah! Listen to the music!
I confess I hadn't noticed any of the flaws that you keyboard-tech-savvy people mentioned, And to be honest, I really don't know shit about any of it.
Still, to me, this is truly a case of performance intensity rendering crappy backline issues meaningless. :)
@piellekes No, it was the engineer's poor mic'ing technique. There should have been a pair of ribbon mics in front of the camera. Instead they were mic'ing the whole soundstage with one stereo pair, thus picking up every little sound in the room.
@FenderRhodesService I second that comment. This Rhodes is horrible - you can also hear from the way he is striking the keys that he felt the action was dead straight away. The gaffa tape all up the side of the speaker cab is a nice touch too. What a waste - Herbie plays an improvisation that could have been incredible, but sadly he is provided with a thoroughly uninspiring instrument.
@tomogradymusic It's not the rhodes, it's the poor mic'ing technique from an engineer that most likely is used to mic'ing interviews, not electric instruments. If you see the actual video this is from, it's obvious that the sound quality for the interviews in this white sound stage is fantastic. For an electric instrument, you want to close mic the speaker to eliminate extraneous noise.
@johanivanovic It *is* the Rhodes - a lot of notes are dead in timbre and it's not evenly voiced. Check out Herbie having to restrike the B flat octave with his left hand at 1:46. He did that because the piano didn't respond.
This has nothing to do with how well it's mic'd or not - I've recorded mine by mic'ing the cabinet and by using the amplifier outs.
does anyone know what kind of chords those are at 2:45 ? Minor sevenths?
