Do you or somebody know that is it possible to be in mars for hours or days with just some plastic suit and oxygen tank (what could be pretty big because it wouldn't be so heavy like in earth) or is there so high- or low-pressure that you need some crazy space suit? :D and could you live there for second or two without anything else but normal clothes and holding breath O_o I mean really what would happen?
@isokessu Mars has a surfare pressure of about 1 kPa (or about 0.15 psi, or about 1% of our sea level pressure), so it's basically hard vacuum. You'd need a pretty regular space suit, preferably with dust-hardened joints. You could survive for about 10 seconds in vacuum without any protective gear without suffering any major damage, after that you'd lose consciousness and soon die. And you should exhale and *not* hold your breath, as the overpressure of air in your lungs would tear them up.
Is anything really ever going to come of this request for video responses. I posted one weeks ago, and it has not even shown up above on the "Video Response" pull-down tab, which still shows a "0." I know that Jeff is a busy man, and can't get to our questions right way, but I can't even get confirmation that my video was received or is in some kind of a queue.
I have a quick question, on one of the previous trips into space (further out from simply orbit) some astronauts said the radiation was dense enough to see with their eyes closed, is orbit far enough out to see the radiation while your sleeping? Or are you still too far in the earth's protective magnetic field? (I know it says video response.. but it's my opinion that I'm a nerd and most people following probably are also, and we don't like cameras...)
Jeff: This is John Beissel, Bernies friend - met you at the fish fry. What was it like to experience the false alarms, was it all training that kept you sane. What is your space walk schedules? Watching and keeping you in our prayers.
Please more govt. funding for NASA! Possibly an international cooperation effort to get back back to the moon and on to mars like the ISS would help too.
Lets write to our congressman, representatives, and world leaders now everyone. No matter what country you are in, educate and get people together in the name of space exploration and human advancement.
This is the only way that governments will take this space effort seriously, is if their constituency is actually behind it.
Are there plans to move past the outpost? How long do you think it will be before tourist are allowed to space? I know there have been civilians in the past but they'd paid alot from what i heard.. Or my best question. How long do you think it will be before there is a cheaper transportation method of people? It seems the only draw back from going into space is the amount of fuel needed to reach orbit not to mention other destinations. I'm sure these questions won't be addressed but oh well
Now that Obama has cut NASA's budget in favor of sending money to his friends on Wall Street does it still make sense for a high school kid to want to be an astronaut any more?
I still think so, for one thing the budget was never there at all my friend. The budget has flown away into deep space since 1975. The govt commitment to NASA is a joke! They were just flexing political muscle by landing on the moon, and now there are more pressing issues to flex their muscles with like war and oil unfortunately. Everyone has friends somewhere and that is the reality of things, we just need a president who has friends at NASA so we can have a bit of money bias on our side.
If you're in space for a long time, is it tough always being enclosed inside the same surroundings? Even after a few hours of being in my room I'd get tired of it and go outside or something.
Hello from Argentina. We are used to see the NASA misions that begin and end with almost no mistakes, every little thing you do wrong is worth millions and i guess that's why. But in ISA theres people living, and i started thinking, how about everyday routine, or easy jobs that turn out to be the most hard thing to do. I once read that putting on socks can be a very difficult job. Do you have any story about those simple things that up there just turn very complicated? Thanks for the oportunity
i have a ? what do you see up there do you guys look at clouds and try to find shapes of animals in it or are you constantly doing work? any way looks like fun hope you guys are safe
That window looked dirty. I wonder if it was the outside or inside. Inside would be easy to fix outside they should try to figure out a good way to clean it. maybe an easy way to swap the outside material.

Tons of it, a lot of research that is making it's way back to earth. I think there's plenty of it to find on Google.
