Thanyou for this guide i modded a pair of myvu crystals using this as a guide if i had tried it on my own i would of been scared i was going to break something :p (i got them £100 on amazon btw) i plan to hook them upto a Fit PC2i Turbo (worn in a jeans pocket) when they get released this month with the mypall battery they also sell on the website in the other pocket to power it (10+ hours runtime)
Holy crap! this video is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I'm camping ebay at the moment for a decent MyVu Crystal to do exactly what you just did there! It's awesome to see the wearable community documenting these things on youtube. By any chance are you a subscriber of the Wear-Hard mailing list?
So I decided to do a similar project but with the much cheaper Myvu Solo Plus also known simply as the Myvu personal media player. I got mine for under a hundred dollars, however it came with extra trouble because the casing was extremely hard to pry off, the two lcd projectors were connected via a ribbon cable, and it required some creative rewiring to turn it into a single eye display. To top it off it was only qvga resolution. From your video it seems like the crystal is easier to deal with.
Have you tested this with an iPhone or iPod Touch? I know that the Myvu has an iPod model made for watching movies, but I'm curious to know how well regular apps appear.
One of the main reasons that I am developing the TVOut extension for iPhone OS is so that I can use it with the Myvu (or similar HMD).
Nice idea.. going to part 2 now! Though, can you tell us, have you had a chance to test out the single display over a couple of hours - solidly? If so, did you have issues (e.g., headaches)? Cheers
After I stare at it for quite a while, my eyes get a bit of strain, but I actually think that's more about the fact that I'm looking right than anything to do with the screen (look right and hold your eye there for an hour or so :P )
The fact that there's only one screen doesn't seem to hurt, I suspect because it's positioned such that the brain knows the other eye wouldn't be able to see it anyway.
Awesome mod. Thanks for sharing it with everyone. I just got some Crystals and an Eee PC, but am still saving up for a frogpad so I can actually interact with my wearcomp.
I'm keeping it simple: A small bluetooth keyboard (the Freedom Input slim keypad) and an awesome little ring-mounted optical mouse that works surprisingly well on clothes and is absurdly cheap (on DealExtreme . com). The frogpad is too expensive :). I may also get a full-sized bluetooth keyboard so that I can more-or-less use my wearable as a laptop.
@GregorRichards as far as input goes the logitech diNovo Mini Wireless keyboard looks good handheld approx 15" wide and with a trackpad too and backlighting maybe a bit fiddly tho
$1,000 upfront, $500 of which to be returned if and only if the construction went without a hitch, otherwise less depending on parts lost. Guaranteed profit!
is this transparent???

how much did this project cost all together?

Just the Myvu Crystal was $250. The total, all components, should be ~$700.
