Dr. Andrew Saul has an extensive site discussing the enormous impact of vitamins on mental and emotional health. @supercell42 I would ask Joan Mathews Larson, PhD. She is the expert. Her contact info is in the video description above. (Click on "Show More" above to view the description.) Taking too much zinc can cause a copper deficiency which can cause problems -- joint pain, etc -- so I would be careful about this. I have a lot of these symptoms but I have a good dream recall. Do you have to have a poor dream reall to have Pyroluria!? I dream every night and can usually remember the last two dreams.
@Kyjo34 I don't know if poor dream recall is absolutely necessary to have pyroluria, but I doubt that it. The only way to know for sure if you have it is to send your urine to BioCenter Lab in Wichita, Kansas and have it tested. An important point is that Dr. Larson does lab tests for everything to prove what is wrong, whereas Psychiatry does NO lab testing, and instead diagnoses everything from a book.Larry Hobbs
If you're having symptoms that mimic pyroluria you can probably try to supplement for a couple of weeks to see if this is something that may help you. It's what I did, and I'm having pretty good results with it. If I start to feel 'wrong' then I'll stop but as I understand it, taking under 750 mg of B6 a day and 75 mg of zinc (morning and noon) won't kill me. You'd have to take massive amounts to have a health problems with basic nutrients. Luck to all who need the help!
I have genetical version of pyrroluria, tried supplements, but B6 didn`t change my depression or dream recall. White flecks on nails went away after 3 months with zinc.
@hokuspokus29 I have pyroluria diagnosed 2 years ago and for me its been very important to rebuild my adrenals in order to truly see benefit from the b6/zinc

it helped in so many ways I can't tell you, and all the symptoms on here describe me 100%. B6 really helps and I have been on numerous Antideppressants and 2 wks of this made me feel like I was so happy and on ecstasi! i get cramps and etc on my face i take p5p as well which helps. Do you think this is just by chance or do i in fact have it, and If i do is it really that severe. I have probs since childhood and the reall probs started after puberty.
hey, i have an important question or you, and thnxzx for this vid btw. About a year ago i started ZInc suppl. Before that I was riddled with depression and anxiety to a crippling level +acne. The zinc was a miracle drug, within 2 wks i was completely diff. I went to my doc and told him but he didn't believe me and offered no help. I decided to start b6 supp on my own and at first it was bad but over time it my face felt cohesive and my nose felt like it was connected to my face
Bamptonbred, Based on her website, it appears that Dr. Larson gives 25-50 mg of Zinc per day 100-500 mg of Vitamin B6 She also gives: 10 mg of Phosphatidal 5 Phosphate 100-3000 mg of Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) 100-1000 mg of Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) 5-20 mg of Manganese. Zinc can cause depletion. 350-1000 mg Magnesium -- taking half the dose of vitamin B6 I don't know if age affects the dose required.
"Pyrolurics respond very quickly to nutritional treatment. I have observed that within one week there is noticeable relief and often substantial recovery will occur within three to six months. However, the treatment regimen is ongoing, throughout their lives."
I just found the page PYROLURIA on Facebook and joined. Now, I formed a group from that page called PYROLURIA PLACE a place for sharing about pyroluria. Come join us. :)
In normal urine, the amount of pyrroles excreted is small, less than 20 ug/dL.
[They bind with B6 and zinc.]
As large amounts of pyrroles are excreted in the urine, it depletes the blood of B6 and zinc.
[Elevated levels of pyrroles] may be found in the urine of 11% of "normals;" 24% of "disturbed children;" 42% of psychiatric patients, and 52% of schizophrenic patients.
Yes but what causes pyroluria to manifest itself? Just like everyone could have cancer but what makes it come out of hiding? My guess it is the diet. We eat all this crap that our genes were never designed to take in causing genetic anomalies. While we were in the womb our childhood. We never really had a choice of what we ate.
Great question! Pyroluria starts rolling in the middle to late teen years, though I've never read why the body would suddenly crank up production of pyrroles when you're in the 9th grade or so.
I read a story about a teen girl. She spent hours in her room, crying for no apparent reason. She was very depressed. It turned out to be pyroluria.
With zinc and B-6, she gradually improved. It takes at least 2 weeks to notice improvement and several months to feel okay.
@AppleSouffle Thanx for the replies. But what I was trying to figure what causes this genetic malfunction in the first. I've been taking b6 and zince for almost 3 months now. Still don't have dream recall but I only take 100mg of b6.
Hey buddy. I have the condition, too. Try adding p5p, the activated form of b6 to your regiment. I'm taking 50mg p5p & 100mg b6 to deal with pyroluria. I now have dream recall.
Hey, I am almost positive i have had this for a while. I had been suffering with all these symptoms and almost went insane at the turn of puberty, it turned out that everytime i ejaculated i got worse. It turned out i had a zinc defficiency that has been mostly corrected with suppplements, I now realize that this is what i had and i told my doctor about it today and he looked at me like wtf. I don't know what you are talking about. I get really moody and am desperate for a cure
Also note that Dr. Larson says there are 15 common causes of depression, requiring different treatments.
Psychiatrist Daniel Amen, MD has done 50,000 brain scans and notes there are 7 different brain patterns of depression, and that treating all of them the same invites disaster.
Each one requires a different treatment.
Beware: My impression is that most doctors have never heard of pyroluria, and so are likely to dismiss it as nonsense.
Dr. Larson states that there are at least 12 common causes of depression. Pyroluria, which can be cured with zinc and large doses of vitamin B6, is just one of them. Dr. Larson does specific lab tests to determine if a person has pyroluria. She also uses a specific lab, because another lab she tried, did not do the test correctly. Other causes she talks about are: - low thyroid - food allergies - hypoglycemia - vitamin dependencies - etc You might also read her book Depression Free.
You and your Mom might want to read Dr. Larson's book "Depression-Free, Naturally" to see if you relate to anything else she talks about.
Dr. Larson discusses many things that can cause mood problems such as food allergies such as to wheat and dairy, and chemical sensitivities, as well as vitamin deficiencies.
She also talks hypoglycemia as a cause of mood problems.
Sorry to hear you still experiencing mood problems.
I'm sure you will find the solution if you keep looking.
In case they gave you a different number, you can also call the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine and ask them if they know of a doctor who lives near you.
This is probably the same number that Dr. Larson's office gave you.

I imagine the college health center will think it is nonsense and not be familiar with the test.
Ok sorry for writing so much but i called and the secretary gave me a number to call so that i can find a place near me. They are going to either email me or call me back. They took my name, email and number. I am going to contact my college's health center just in case if they can do my testing......i am really desperate for help. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INFO!!!!
It is ok for me to start trying out ZINC and B6 without having a proper diagnosis? Seriously i am desperate and i am pretty sure i have it. I have a doc appointment march 12 and i can't wait for that. I need something now because this is really taking over my life. Sometimes i feel like killing myself, and i am always anxious and having to pee. Then this stupid nauseous and seizures and it really bothers me. I also get stitches when i try exercising and i always feel tire...... :(.
I would also call Dr. Larson's clinic to ask for specific advise on how much to take and when to take it.
I believe she uses about 40 mg of zinc and 600 mg of vitamin B6, which she divides into at least 3 doses, so 200 mg three times per day.
There are many other natural supplements that have antianxiety and antidepressant effects. such as 1,000 mg of niacinamide three times per day for a total of 3000 mg per day.
Dr. Jonathan Wright also notes that he has found that about 70 percent of patients with general unexplained fatigued are helped when they go on a bland diet eliminating all common food allergens such as wheat, soy, dairy, corn, citrus fruits, and I forget what else.
Dr. Larson says she has seen the most amazing turn arounds after figuring out what people are allergic to and eliminating it from their diet.
Also, i have a question i have all the symptoms of pyroluria. I also PEE A LOT!!!!! I thought i had a bladder problem but they checked and everything is fine. My Urine has a really bad smell!! Also, bad body ordor, very unusual smell although i shower constantly and daily. It does not smell natural, my feet are always cold and sometimes i get this seizure. My body shakes and i get a weird sensation in my brain.
Dr. Andrew Saul has an extensive site discussing the enormous impact of vitamins on mental and emotional health. He recommends large doses of certain ones as the only way to get a therapeutic effect, the same thing Dr. Larson is recommending. He also talks a lot about Niacin, or B3, in correcting mental disorders such as schizophrenia. Bill W. of Alcoholics Anonymous highly regarded B3 in the treatment of alcoholism.

The only way to know if a person has Pyroluria is to have your urine tested by the following lab.

Dr. Laron notes that other labs do NOT do the test correctly.
But if you feel better on zinc, B6 and p5p, then I would just keep taking it.

300,
Thanks for sharing your story.
Very interesting.
I am not surprised that your doctor did not believe you.

If it's correct pyrroles are a by-product of adrenaline production, is this why pyroluria becomes worse under stress?

Dr. Larson also notes on her website:
"Pyrolurics respond very quickly to nutritional treatment. I have observed that within one week there is noticeable relief and often substantial recovery will occur within three to six months. However, the treatment regimen is ongoing, throughout their lives."

maybe you should speak to a professional. just don't overdo it on the zinc 50 mg should be fine to start with.

So what actually causes the pyroluria in the first place?
dbztiki 2 years ago
Here is more of what Bio-Center says:

We never really had a choice of what we ate.
dbztiki 2 years ago
dbztiki,
I tried to post this a couple of times, but it would not let me.
It is from the Bio-Center website.
Pyrroles appear in the urine of patients undergoing severe physiological or psychological stress.
The presence of urinary pyrroles was first reported in patients with LSD psychosis.
Later, high levels of pyrroles were found in the urine of schizophrenic patients.
It is also called kryptopyrrole. Kryptos comes from the Greek word "hidden."

Larry, may I ask a question?
If pyroluria is a disorder people are born with, how come some people with it don't get depressed with it for many years?
Shouldn't everyone with pyrole disorder be unable to manufacture adequate levels of serotonin from birth?
fireiciclespark 2 years ago
fireiciclespark,
My impression from what she said is that it tends to get worse as people get older.

AppleSouffle 2 years ago
Dbztiki, pyroluria is caused by pyrroles, useless byproducts from making red blood cells.
With most people, the kidneys dump the pyrroles into the urine and you pee them out.
With some people, the body makes way too many pyrroles and they attach to the B-6 and zinc in the blood, then you pee out zinc and B-6.
The thing is to take so much B-6 and zinc that your body still has some after you pee out a bunch.
And arachidonic acid is supposed to help, found in eggs.
AppleSouffle 2 years ago
@AppleSouffle Thanx for the replies. But what I was trying to figure what causes this genetic malfunction in the first. I've been taking b6 and zince for almost 3 months now. Still don't have dream recall but I only take 100mg of b6.
dbztiki 2 years ago
Oooh, I don't know about the genetics of pyroluria. It probably started because of a mutation. Humans have over 4,000 genetic disorders.
If you do have it, 100 mg of B-6 isn't enough. I take 5, 100 mg capsules, 1 when I get up, the rest spread out through the day until 5:30 or 6 pm.
With many people, if they take B-6 too late in the day, it will keep them awake, no matter how tired they are! So be careful.
First time I took B-6 at 9 pm, I was awake all night long!
Good health to you!

@dbztiki

Beware: My impression is that most doctors have never heard of pyroluria, and so are likely to dismiss it as nonsense.
larryshobbs 2 years ago
Wow, I never thought my depression had anything to do with my zinc defieciency.
If I continue to take calcium magnesium and zinc vitamins along with a high zinc diet, will this cure my depression?

hi,
i am 15 years old and developed this problem when i was 11.
My mum got me to take zinc and b6 from then on,
It really helped but when i miss a dose my mood goes downhill again, also i think i may be missing some vitamin because my mood still isn't right...
90sKidSarah 3 years ago
Sarah,
You and your Mom might want to read Dr.
Thank you

Pyroluria can cause secondary deficiencies to zinc and B6 such as deficiencies in manganese, vit C,vit E,omega 6 fatty acids, cysteine.
DefeatADDnow 2 years ago
B6 increases gluthione which detoxifies mercury and other toxins. If you were low in B6 in the past you could have accumulated mercury.

If you have a silver fillings in your mouth get them out ASAP with a holistic dentist because are you are being exposed to mercury.

SexyDrBitch 3 years ago
I'm sorry you feel so badly.
If it were me, I would go ahead and try it.
I would also call Dr. Larson's clinic to ask for specific advise on how much to take and when to take it.
I believe she uses about 40 mg of zinc and 600 mg of vitamin B6, which she divides into at least 3 doses, so 200 mg three times per day.
There are many other natural supplements that have antianxiety and antidepressant effects. such as 1,000 mg of niacinamide three times per day for a total of 3000 mg per day.

ok thank you so much and sorry for bothering you. I am going to give her a call right now thanks.

Dr. Larson also notes that wheat, dairy and sugar can make people feel anxious, depressed and even suicidal.
I would also try eliminating them completely for 3 weeks and see if you notice a difference.
larryshobbs 3 years ago
