How would you connect these lights to an existing switch in a finished bedroom. In particular, if you have an overhead light and you want the light to work independently of the pot lights, how would you connect this scenario?
ok, just the hundereds we havee installed do not have the ground pre-attached, just the screw in the back of the box for the ground wire, maybe the brand you ues..
@HouseImprovements ok I watched the vid 2 more time, at the metal light box you twisted the 2 grounds together, but did not look like you attached them to the metal box ground screw, also no mention of attaching the ground to the metal juction light box, you did show shuving the grounds up into the box, but not attaching to the box ground on the light, like you did at the swich, corect me if I am missing something here, watch the part were your doing the grounds at the light, swich box is fine.
@arnoldcustom These type of lights have a ground wire pre-riveted to the box. You may notice when I start to twist the wires by hand you can see 3 wire ends there. Guess I could have mentioned this but I have never seen it any different they always come with a ground pre-attached. Thanks for watching!
This is a great video! I have searched youtube for a video that shows how to add a switch to a light. Yours does this exactly as i need. I saw completely what i need to do. Now i don't have to go and hire some fat slow, lazy electrician who is going to charge me a ridiculous amount of money for almost nothing. Thank you again!!
@hotfevers This white wire travels back to the switch carrying the power, making this white wire a hot wire (that's why we put black tape on it in the switch box to identify it's the hot supply wire) so when the switch is ON, both the white and black wires between the light and switch are hot.
@hotfevers This is a standard method and any electrician opening that light or switch would be able to easily identify things. Basically we do this because otherwise we would need a piece of wire w/ 2 black wires in side and that is not available.
How did you ever pass your ruff in inspection, you electrician or yourself must have all receptacle box grounds consented to the boxes on the Rough in inspection before you insulate or install your dry wall, I see none of your grounds are connected in your switch box, so I can’t help to think no other box in your new home has the grounds connected ether, it’s a must to connect them before dry wall
you just failed your inspection, your ground must be connected to the ground screw inside the metal box, all grounds MUST connect to all boxes, no matter if it is a light, switch, plug or a junction box sub panel, main panel
@arnoldcustom Yes you are completely correct all ground wires must be attached to the electrical boxes... If you watch the video again you will see that I did indeed secure all ground wires to both boxes.
Can you please upload a video on how we can have multiple recess lighting going to the same connection, that's the only thing that is stopping me. thanks.
Great video. Is it possible for you to go over the why you connected the black wire to the white in some detail?

@dcire9999 If you want the existing light to work independently from the pots than you need to install the pots on a separate switch.
