@pecash ridin the tailboard, 3/4 boots and long coats. suckin in your fair share of smoke before maskin up. that was the thing back then. still old school, yeah, some of us still suck a little smoke, even a young guy like myself is guilty of it, but the fire service is 100 years of tradition, untouched by progress.
This brings back a lot of memories. Watching things go by, that Detroit by your head screaming, then you fought fire. Good times spent with great men. Rookies today complain when their headsets don't work

the only time the open jump seat sucks is when its about -10 Fahrenheit outside and you are running a mutual aid 20 miles away, other than that its a blast
How safe do you feel in the back of the truck?...I joined my local volunteer FD and I'm gonna be riding in an old 1980's e-one (Ford style) open canopy cab.
my dad is a firefighter or he has been for 26 years and one of his friends just about ate tha road the way it sounded with an open cab dnt know how somebody wasnt wearing te safty belt
Our department just got rid of an 83 American LaFrance. Riding jump seat was normal for us. You wear headsets to talk to the crew, and you HAD to buckle up
@gskizzle1025 I know what you mean my dept has a 85 duplex and the rest of the guy's think i am nut's that i would rather ride in the jump seat. Like i have told them it doesn't bother me one bit i enjoy the jump seat. Sadly however we plan to retire her this year.
I ride in an open jumpseat all the time. Especially as 2nd due behind the rescue for extrications on the highway. Never bothered me a bit except when its pooring rain and blowing in ur face at 50mph or more. That's a bit annoying but doesn't matter.
That looks like Dallas' 1980's model Spartan/Gladiator Monarchs. With Detroit Diesel engines. Oh this is one of the reasons why I feel in love with firefighting. Love the old open cabs.
tht is true. but you also know that there are a lot of rules that you dont follow that are in the textbook. in my department in south florida we bunker up if we get a call while in motion. it doesnt make sense to pull over and stop to bunker up. or bunker up on scene
My friend If riding in an open jump seat makes you nervous you probably never rode a tailboard. That can make you real nervous especially when the truck hits a bad bump. You hang on for dear life when your feet bounce off the tailboard. The first rig I ever road the tailboard of was a 1948 Aherns-Fox quad (a ladder service pumper combo). Unfortunately, yes I am that old.
so what do you do when you gotta bunker up when you get a call in the middle of the road? when me and my partner buker up we move alot...but great video and stay safe
You shouldn't feel that nervous about it. I love these old "Open Cab Warriors". So they're not exactly the safest damn thing in the world, but having your ass hanging out like that is what makes these old rigs so cool. The adrenline rush I get makes it all worth it. Especially when you're responding in the middle of a really powerful downpour of rain, the wind and water hitting you. And the Ear Splitter Federal Siren Screaming. It really is a slice of firefighting life. That's sadly disappeared.
I've been a volunteer for four years, captain in my department. Been professional for a year and a half so yeah, still pretty new to the professional world.
@mmarlin163 How times have changed. I used to tiller an aerial with no roof, no windshield, no seatbelt and no way to communicate with the driver except a horn button on the floor and this was a first line piece of apparatus. That was how they were built back in the day.
Ahh, you kids. We have the same issue with the young 'uns on my dept. If it has a roof, it's not an open cab. This is an open CANOPY. Nice video, though.
We're getting rid of a truck like this. It was a 1976 Ford/Grumman 1250 GPM pumper. It served as front line until ten years ago, then it ran second piece out on all fires and stuff like that. Now it's getting replaced by a 2008 Pierce Velocity 2400 gallon pumper-tanker. Awesome vid, five stars for sure.
this has been my dream to do on a maxim and also drive a seagrave tiller.lol

Baldwin NY just retired a Open Cab engine as of this year. So there are engines out there with no roof on them.

@gskizzle1025 Being non-buckled is quite an experience...We have a 55'ALF (Retired, used for parades and stuff) And there are no belts.

Nothing beats the feeling of riding in an open jumpseat like this. The sound of the detroit and the whine of the turbo is awesome. Great video

Out First out Engine is like this.. We call it an "Open Mother in law".
Ours does have a safety gate and we use our lap belts. Feels safe until the truck rolls over :)
Oh, and is it ever cold back there in the dead of winter.
911caddy 3 years ago
why foes it make u nervous?? we have a truck like this one and i love ridin in it
80fireman 3 years ago
It looks to have a roof.
If so,it's not an open cab,but a closed cab.
An open cab is no roof.
A closed cab is having a roof but no rear cab enclosure
And fully enclosed cab is a roof, usually rear doors and the rear cab is closed(closed completely.
fmartinjr 3 years ago
Are you buckled in? A seatbelt is always nice when running in an open cab.
nagrom12 3 years ago 3
Wouldn't be ridin' it any other way lol

@mmarlin163 The seatbelt on our rig was stuck... but i personally took a can of WD40 and made it work just for me!

At least it is better than the "old" days when fire fighters stood on the back running board and held on for dear life.
