I love how this orchestra filmed the soloists and ripieno group separately. Have a look at the first movement, it's so funny how each soloist walks around and even walks up the stairs when they play! hahaahaha~
Is this the only concerto that you have with the Basel Radio Orchestra? The tempi are so relaxed and enjoyable... much like the tempi of earlier recordings. I like all versions, but this one hearkens me back to a gentler time in musicianship. Thank you.
tragic that you have to go back to a 40 year old mono recording to see it played correctly at the originally intended tempo...thank monopoly and over commercialization of music by certain people in New York
@mothtits966 I think it's too fast. Sounds like he's showing off going at that pace and trying to play all those high notes. Check out any of my videos for some proper horn playing. It's not all about technique - it's about getting a good sound and playing with feeling.
They are all very skilled, I just think the oboe player is f-ing sick! He looks pretty funny, too! I would fondle the hot violinist, that is getting the close ups, and see if she would react to it while playing. Im sorry but the music just makes me think about sex.
Good performance...but the THX 1138-esque bright white negative space is only slightly less creepy than the disturbing robotic looks on their faces...lol
@MatthewThornton89 : Real men feel respect regarding such artists like Marc
Ullrich. He's also able to play the baroque trumpet, but
this is an early recording, so people usually have played with piccolo trumpet. Today al lot of trumpet players take the baroque trumpet because of the different sound.
For all those people who think this trumpeter is showing off, why don't you look at the actual music, and FOR THE PICCOLO TRUMPET MUSIC, JUST REMEMBER THAT THE MUSIC FOR THE PICCOLO TRUMPET IS WRITTEN ONE OCTAVE BELOW THE NOTE THAT IS HEARD. This piece was written like this, with every high note! There are only a handful of notes without leger lines. Most of the notes in the piece have at least two leger lines. So he's not showing off, just playing the piece how it was written!
What's all this talk about "legers" and "piccolows" and "octaves" and blah blah blah...
Hey "gonadbrain", sounds to me like you're too bogged down in analyzing minute details to hear what's happening in the music. As I said before, what's important is the SOUND, not all this nonsense about theory and technical jargon.
Wow, you're not a nice person. my point was not that. you said that this guy was showing off because he was playing so high, and i just wanted to say that he wasn't, because he's playing the song just the way it was written
Bach is a geniuos.. i like this version, most ppl play this very fast but the time here is perfect... I also liked also the violin player Bettina Boller, she is so beautiful!
@number1trumpet to be honest I don't like too much the trompet here... he cuts notes wich should be longer, lots of them, taking out the energy, but the tempo is ok for me.. i didn't get your point of -there's no need for so many high notes... what year is this video?? someone knows??
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I just think it's showing off to be playing so high all the time. Check out any of my videos and you'll see that though I could go up into the higher registers if I felt like it, I stick to what is required by that specific song.
have you bothered looking at the actual music. This was how it was written!!! With all the high notes!!! If you were looking at this piece for the piccolo trumpet, you must remember that all the notes are written one octave below the note that is actually heard! So, don't say that people who play this piece high are showing off, because that's the way Bach wrote this song. And i personally enjoy Bach's music, but you entitled to who you do and don't like
Yes but all it does is facilitate fingerings, slotting, trills etc. If your lips can't produce the note, blowing in a picc won't change a thing. Marc Ullrich is simply awesome in this performance. Precision, clarity, pitch, ease, he hardly seems to put any pressure behind it. And Bettina Boller is not only superb in performance but also beautiful. Thanks to Gordon for another excellent vid.
true true true you actually know what youre talking about...but smaller instruments require less air intensity to produce high notes...because they are smaller the vibrations inside the instrument are intensified and it makes it easy to play higher...but as you said if you cant produce the note playing the piccolo trumpet wont do anything more for you
The performance is quite nice, don't misunderstand! It's the video that cracks me up. I also love how they line them all up "voltron" style at the very end of the video.
I find everything about this performance to be great aside from the lack of a harpsichord. Still though, they managed fine enough without it, I suppose.
I totally agree. It sounds right at that speed. Some of the arly recordings of it are too slow and some of the recent ones are too fast. This performance feels right.
@JirSevd although, no one really knows how this is meant to be played as bach didnt even play it so it was left up to the interpretation of the more modernistic orchestra's to how to it should be played
This is probably one of the thoughest trumpet parts there is in the classical music (due to the insane height), now Marc Ullrich is doing an outstanding job here, but remember that this is music written in the baroque, and played on baroque instruments this is really tough.. There are two different inteprentations of the trumpet part here that you should listen to; one with Toshio Shimada and one with Gabriele Cassone. You will enjoy the one with Cassone, and your ears might hurt with Shimada ;)
Now this is what I call a music video. I'm dying to play the trumpet part myself. I'm surprised that in all 6 brandenburgs, this is the only one with trumpet. What I really like about his particular video is that the way it's shot is very Kubrick-esque, and I couldn't help but laugh at 2:02 where all four soloists are bunched together. Still a really cool video, adn an amazing concerto.
