Tänak closes in to the car just before the very narrow uphill section with trees on both sides of the road. the codriver Kraag says that they cannot overtake the whole section until they are at the top. Tänak knows it and doesn't want to brake the front window with stones from the first car so he slows down and doesn't get too close. Just before the end of the narrow section codriver says: "now we need to close the gap" and follows "of course they will turn off to the left".

and if you look closely you can see 2 things:

1) that they don't loose any more time than they have to. just before the last car-following turn they are as close as they can get without hitting it

2) look at the speedometer - they are about 10-20 km/h slower when following as opposed to 2 times they drive the narrow section without obstacles.

and last: Tänak wins all gravel stages with big margin over the others so there is no question who is the fastest :)
