One of the most remarkable musicians, imho. Exceedingly wonderful craft coupled with the keenest of musical intelligence. He even makes Bach sound not boring! Lol.
Hard to believe that playing of such marvellous spirit and vitality came from a man at death's door. Such a testiment to Lipatti's courage, his deep and abiding spirituality, and his genius as an artist. These priceless recordings of his are a gift for many generations to come.
Lipatti playing Bach is new to me - we had recordings of him playing Chopin when I was a girl 50 years ago. This is wonderful - thank you. I will look out for more.
that's the magic of bach. you can play it almost in every tempo and it's sounds great. this i cannot yet understand. how is it possible ? the only answer i came ouy with is that bach (j.s.) is more than music.
(1) I agree a lot of Bach's music can be played almost in every tempo and it still works. I don't know if Glenn Gould's phenomenal control and precision has something to do with that too. Gould also played other composers' music at extreme tempi and he often made those pieces work in my opinion.
(2) On the other hand, Bach's music power is in the enormous expressivity of every note in the melodic line, the command of harmony and the most complex counterpoint as well as a constant drive towards the end of the compositon, a combination I would say unique in the history of music. Just my two cents.
I agree. Bach is one of those very rare guys who makes you shake your fist in anger at the whim of fate that allowed for only two ears on a human head...
This is one very "guarded" video. =p

Interesting how slower and really fast tempo both work perfectly for this allemande - or at least to my ear.
