When I first saw this commercial, I thought Kalaka was going to be a new Saturday Morning cartoon series in the Fall. But then I found out it was only a commercial.
I mean they kept our spirits "up" in a decade of doubt and uncertainty. Of course back then I didn't feel any doubt and uncertainty about my country. I was too busy being a kid and having fun to worry about such things.
Now I bet you guys are wondering what does the OPEC oil Embargo, the Shah of Iran, the Ayatollah Khomeini and Islamic revolutions have to do with this cute cartoon commercial. Alot of you are probably saying: "What is this guy talkin about?" But sometimes unfortunate events overseas affect us in many ways and most of the time we're unaware of it. Commercials like this were very helpful and amusing as well.
KALAKA was Babylonian 4 CARPOOLING?! Well, there's our history lesson 4 today. It just goes 2 show u, CARPOOLing or KALAKA is worth the time today... CONSIDERING THE BLOODY GAS PRICES WE HAVE!! Thank GOD for KALAKA.
@mr2del This was from the 1970s during the Energy Crisis when Americans were trying to save on fuel by sharing rides in cars together. The Energy Crisis was caused by the OPEC Oil Embargo of 1973 because the West supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War with Egypt and thus oil prices in America skyrocketed.
@67nairb When this psa was reintroduced in 1980 fuel prices at the gas pump skyrocketted because Iran Hostage Crisis and President Carter froze all Iranian assets which made the Ayatollah Khomeini impose an oil embargo on the U.S.
@67nairb I mean fuel prices at the gas pump skyrocketed "again" because of the Iran Hostage Crisis. I read that during the Oil Embargo of 1973 the only OPEC country that didn't impose an embargo on the U.S.A. was Iran because the Shah was on friendly relations with us. That all changed however when the Shah was overthrown by the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
@67nairb OUCH!! I was born in '73. What a dirty shame that was. Thanks for re-educating me 67nairb. You really have your history down pat. I immensely appreciate that.
@mr2del Your welcome and thanks for the compliment. I myself remember the car lines at the gas pump during the 70s and the Energy Crisis. But I don't remember hearing about the Arab OPEC Embargo or the Yom Kippur War in 1973. I was six years old then and learned about it afterwards as a teenager. Thanks for the compliment anyway.
this is truly amazing! i actually remember this from when i was in the 4th grade.

Does Kalaka really mean carpool in Babylonian or was that name just made for laughs?
67nairb 1 year ago
I always thought it was called Caclac and I always wondered why it was called carpool. We never had a pool in our car.

Actually, that is incorrect. The voices on this are as follows...Alan Barzman as the reporter, and Pat McCormick as Noah.
