OpenArena on the Eee PC - Low Quality

Eee PC? I have one of those notebooks. Can't run Quake III Arena well, but runs Quake Live great.

yeah openarena runs great on my eee pc 900 16g linux version... but multiplayer doesnt work ?? it says wrong directory or sumtihing

You should try a better game, like quake 3. OA isn't ready in its current beta version. At least imo :S

Open Arena *is* Quake 3, minus the proprietary content. There is nothing 'beta' about it besides the version number.

OA is not quake 3. There are a number of examples I can present to you. First off, OA uses ioquake3 as its base. Nothing wrong with it, I use it. Next off, there are a number of changes to this base that I don't like. The developer claims he didn't make any changes (other than adding bloom), but looking at the source code that is horrible lie. Taking a closer look at what is in the proprietary data, you will find a lot of what makes up quake 3 beyond textures, models, and maps.

lastly, I present the incompatibility OA has with most mods. OA is also incompatible with baseq3 (the proprietary data from quake 3). If OA was just a set of mod data running on the ioquake 3 engine, then it should be possible to run baseq3 on the OA download, and OA on the ioquake3 download. This has proven not to be the case. OA also runs much slower than quake 3. If you own quake 3, then why would you download OA?

Look for q3config.cfg, on linux in ~/.openarena/baseoa.

Find these lines and change to below:

seta r_mode "-1"

seta r_fullscreen "1"

seta r_customwidth "800"

seta r_customheight "480"

This is amazing...I love playing a bit of OpenArena every now and then. I had no idea of the 3D capabilities of the Eee PC though! Maybe its because the screen is 800x480. I'm thinking of getting one but to be honest I cannot think of a practical use yet. I already have a MacBook and two desktops, not to mention a spare Dell Server sitting in a box somewhere.

yes I used an external mouse, its near impossible to play an FPS without one. (More specifically I use a Logitech G5)
