Also according to Molotov(foreign minister ), russians just wanted to move finish border futher from Leningrad(St.Petersburg) for safety of russian second largest city. Soviet territories were offered to Finland in excange for those close to Leningrad. But Finland declined the offer. So when diplomacy failed, Stalin just decided to get those territories by force. But Soviet Union did not want to occupy or annex Finland, the goal was purely to secure Leningrad. At least this is what Molotov said.
@arcpeter Yeah annex them like Estonia, Latvia and so on. Molotov is a liar and so is the propaganda from the Soviet Union. The USSR just doesn`t want to admit that the finns kicked the shit out of them.
Yeah, but you forget thet Finland was a former Russian province and before that it was Swedish province. It was given independence after Russian Revolution of 1917. So Finland was actually independent for only 22 years... So Stalin just wanted to bring back territories he felt belongs to Russia. Mannerheim himself served for more then two decades in Imperial Russian Army and made it to Lieutenant General there.
I think this defeat should also be seen as a payback for the Finnish(Mannerheims) support of the whites in 1918. Nothing is black and white, and some of the soil conquered in 1940 actually returned to the right owner. But nothing excuses the brute use of military force by the Soviets, as well the atrocities against civilians committed by both sides in this war.
@11month11day11our everything russia stole from finland was rightfully finlands own,and most of the conguers finns did were rightfully their too, russia had no reason to attack a small nation like finland and is holding all responses from it
@aker1993 And yet they fought of the Germans and fought them to Berlin. It was a hard lesson learned in which hundreds of thousands of peasents had to pay the price while high ranking soviet commanders had to merely learn from their mistakes. Mistakes unfortunately that they didn't learn from until 1942 after millions died.
You can;t really blame the UK or the other Nordic states, the UK was already at war with Germany, and the Norway and Sweden knew if they failed they would be next. It wasn't exactly caring, but it wasn't their fight to fight.
@XxxSakura101 what if the russians would have cut Finland in half !! Dont you think the sweds would have joined the war/letting the french trough their territorial waters??

Not quite everything Stalin had wanted. This war was a massive embarrassment to the Red Army.

@TomeOfBattle And a great justification for the massive German campaign of WWII on the eastern front.
