  • this wount work in kuwait.,....lol (around 55c)

  • Shouldnt u léave more space so air can circulate better inside the cooler?

  • Lots of nonsense in the comments here. First, this is not going to cool the interior of an automobile effectively. The a/c compressor in cars and light trucks are 2-4 ton units (167-350 pounds of ice melted per hour). A cooler filled with ice bottles doesn't even come close. Second, the energy consumed by the fan is negligible. Do the math. There's nothing wrong with the idea... it's just that the cooling capacity is very limited. Spot cooling might be a good use.

  • Why would you insulate the top? are you afraid some of the "cold" that is inside will get out?!? lol Isnt that kind-of the point?

  • another stupid redneck

  • Tried that, a truck with no a/c and that was a waste of time and money. It had a cool breeze but that did not last long and there was no temperature difference in the cab of that truck. I ended up turning it off and rolling the windows back down.

  • @wduane2807 try it again, but this time, after you put in the frozen soda bottles or ice, pour some salt over the ice. It will lower the temperature at which ice will freeze, and, henceforth, make the output cooler, and last longer.

  • @luigi2999 Thanks, right now it has been put away for winter storage but when I get it back out I will try that.

  • Awesome video. I know that some people are going to tell you that freezing water takes too much energy etc but if I were camping in here in Texas, I'd use that in a heartbeat. This is the best design I've seen and the fact that you are running it off of Solar to Batteries is awesome.

  • This is a good example....but you also have to consider the power consumed by the freezer to make the ice....generally I like the idea....also do you have the discharge cfm info....I guess you need to upgrade that too.....

  • Thankyou. This is the most comprehensible method so far. I'm just dyin from the heat in my car. :)

  • what a waste. This is an ineffective air cooler. Not an air"conditioner". The fan probably produses more heat than the airflow cools down.

Why not just place the frosen bottles in front of a regular coolingfan? Placing them in a circle around you without a fan would probably also have better effect. Or even just leave the freeser lid open instead of freesing all this water? Waiste of time, materials and energy.

  • lol hes got a laser temp gauge but cant afford an a/c unit? good job though looks like it works good!

  • @BrendanJuel i saw a laser temp gauge for $29 at the hardware store

  • why would you put it on the ground?.... hot air rises and cold air sinks, so all the cold air stays on the ground...

  • only in amercia

  • were do i get the equipment from

  • @ArmandoMando17 Fan: specialised car shop. Wooden cover: just everywhere. plastic corner: building market.

but if you look at WallMart you can find it too,

  • this will cool but not dehumify right ?

  • why not take one of those electric coolers...the ones with the TEC built in them to keep your beer cold..and hole saw s few holes in it..1 for inlet 1 for out let..and plug it in...if it keeps beer cold it will keep you cold.

  • the problem is the noise

  • I was gonna make one of these things, but, as I was walking around, I notice my neighbors have (had?) a badass, sweet little window unit stickin' out of the side of their house...and, for some odd reason, someone had written my name of it. I wouldn't steal anything, though, ever. but now i went out and bought a nice sweet little black spray paint covered window unit. way easier to build.

  • Thanks for the info, love it. :-)

  • I loved the frozen coke bottle Idea, so you don't have to buy ice at the store.

you can take it inside you van and let it cool your car, can save gas too.

    five stars!

  • what???? HUH??? *hand up to ear*

  • i build this tommorow.

the heat nearly killed me today.

  • @xBloodXGusherx

did u make that really......what was the result???please tell me...i am planning to make such kind of small air conditioner...

  • @pprinceton11 Hey. Ya i built it. Mine seems to not work as well as this. I need a more powerful fan it eems. Also I need the correct elbow shaped piping to direct the air to me. I just barley managed to make the wood top. I used a drill gun, made many holes then punched the peices out. You do need a lot of soda bottles though.

  • @xBloodXGusherx

    hey...thanks for reply

i will try to make that kind of thing with some additions and subtractions,,,,lolz....means i will try but will made some changes,,,,

  • @xBloodXGusherx lmao, just go get a piece of styrofoam insulation board from home depot and use a blade to cut it up. WOW!

  • @Moe7133 ok expert.

  • @xBloodXGusherx Duck tape! Duck tape! Duck tape! It's your friend. :) Just don't duck tape yourself.

  • Where do you freeze your bottles? the question is because I'm afraid my fridge overheats and that the electricity bill increases. Thank you for your help.

  • I made one similar to this one and it was not much more effective than a regular fan :( - great experiment

  • tempature is about 70 in febuary with the air on hmmm maybe uploaded months later I take it...

  • I bought a 5000 btu air conditioner for 80 bucks at walmart, it cost 40 dollars a year to run

    just buy a ac

  • Во мудило пендосовское!

  • How is this better than just some ice blowing over a fan? Might be worth it if the freezer was solar powered too.

  • kool i can ues it in my car i have a 64 cad i will try it out

bc i have no free on

  • Great idea. I need to make a unit like this for the rear of my Cargo van. I make deliveries and it its so hot. Also. If you turn down the power of the fan it will blow colder. Turn it on high and it will blow a little warmer. Same as the front ac in your car. Good video. Thanks for posting.

  • Stupid just wasting my time IDIOT

  • @aaquibr then don't watch.

  • im using the same exact fan for mine so that i can use my solar power to run this as well, nice setup

  • i made one and it works really good thanks

  • y on earth u need cooler when ur room is fucking 22 degree...

  • i tried doing this once.. it didnt turn out too good..

  • Curiously.. all things being equal... it takes more money to run the freezer compressor to freeze the bottles than you'd save by doing this?

I mean.. rigging a swamp cooler would be far more inexpensive.. moving air over water makes for a hell of a chill.

  • @dubbified There may be some validity to what you are saying but imagine this in a car with no AC when you have no alternative or while camping when you have no alternative. This would be perfect.

  • nice idea. I want to try that. Although we're getting a foot of snow, as I type, summer will be here in no time.

  • i like it thinking of making one for my computer room, tho room is 40 degrees in summer. so maybe will do not much at all. if it was 22 degrees i would not need a aircon.

  • Comment removed

  • not what i was looking for - am looking for a 12 volt air conditioner - not something that use's frozen water - sheesh !!!

  • it is noisy

  • does it cool a room

  • does this thing actually work?

  • @SuperSexyBoiGod There is a library in California that uses this system. it freezes 2000 gal of water each night when the price of electricity is most expensive.

  • @SuperSexyBoiGod i have a portable swamp cooler, uses abut 300 watts of power and has to be refilled every 3 hrs. It works in low humidity areas, it cost me 89 $ before tax .

  • The heat produced by making the ice (by your freezer) indoors + the heat made by your fan will result in a net effect of heating the the area with this system.

  • @BIGTROUT01 U freeze the pop bottles at night when the electricity and temperature is lower. The amount of heat put out by a fan is not able to be felt by the typical human. I run a fan by my bed in the summer/fall and i never felt the air flow any warmer. It would get too cold at night.

  • Great for me and my room mate. He can keep his bedroom FREEZING cold at night and I don't have to shiver in the middle of summer. For some like me, who lives in Texas, WAY cheaper than putting in a Window AC!

  • @SuperSexyBoiGod

Probably would be. but DIY solutions are typically cheaper in the immediate outlay than their commercial counterparts, plus the mental 'bonus' of actually doing it yourself rather than relying on some big nameless company.

  • @SuperSexyBoiGod

Technically, you could simply take a small fridge or freezer, put in a copper coil and pump, then run PVC pipes to your fan (Another copper pipe coil around that), then back again (Complete circle with water running through it).

It'd make cooler air from the fan and as long as you don't put the fridge in the same room as the fan, it would be a cooler room, the downside is, its not going to be close to an A/C cooled room AND you'd be heating up another room.

  • @SuperSexyBoiGod

Not really, consider the scale. Freezer has to cool a small, insulated area down to zero and keep it there.

AC has to contend with a larger room, more airflow (So less thermal stability), more external heating sources (Humans, animals, electronics, etc) and has to be larger than needed to get decent cooling.

Just check out the energy usage of a freezer and fan verses AC, its a surprisingly big difference.

  • @SuperSexyBoiGod

It is a "Room Cooler" not a house cooler. Many people prefer an Individual relatively sealed room to be cooler than the rest of the house. This allows that to happen for minimal increase in power bill (What power is needed to refreeze the bottles)

This would REALLY help in peoples rooms running extremely high wattage (600+W) Systems that cause the individual room to heat up greatly. In this case it will be cheaper to freeze the bottles than cool the whole house with AC.

  • NICE Job! And you are FAR more realistic about this than other videos. Some are claiming free or near free air conditioning but simple physics will tell you that pulling heat out of the air is never free.

I REALLY like how you use bottles as the cool surface to transfer heat to. What many of these other videos do is make things worse because the nonsealed systems quickly add moisture to the air.

The solar system is a GREAT idea in my opinion.

  • Good Job..How about putting a thermometer near the out let,to show what the temp is coming out...

  • Eventhough the idea is good and is probaly inexpensive I think you would have better cooling results with a vortex tube. The only thing that needs powered in a vortex tube is the air intake. The cool side air output with enough air pressure can expel cold air at about -40.

  • @cardwellent Will a regular fan power a vortex tube? Where do we get one?

  • So how large are the solar panels + how long does it typically take to charge the batteries ?

  • and what is the point of the insulation if the idea is to get the cold out of the box???

  • @jducati11 This allows you to direct the air and makes the ice last longer.

  • GLAD YOUR STAYING COOL. GOOD jOB!!!. I agree that placing the cooler up on a table would be a very smart way to increase efficiency. Also, have you tried standing up the bottles. You would get more surface area exposed to the air flow. May melt bottles faster, but then youll know it is working more efficiently.

  • cool idea and cool execution, mate.

I'll definately built one for the next summer

    thanks for sharing

  • canaian tire fan to good uuse they suck and blow arond hot air

  • thats a good ass idea

  • nice job man!

  • You probably already know this and maybe this was just on the floor for the video but you will get MUCH better cooling if you place that unit up on the counter or even higher. Since hot air rises and cool air falls it's best to have it cool the air from top to bottom. It will be much more efficient the higher in the room you can put it. I wonder what effect it would have if you also filled the cooler with water as well as ice. Just a thought. Maybe try it and measure the difference.

  • If you blew the air across the fan would it not produce even cooler air? The air going in would be cooler thus making even cooler air - I think.

  • haha great, could install one in my `88 audi 80 without AC :D

  • يعجبني من يفكر

  • This is so cool. The guy had the basic decency to acknowledge the first contributors. Good work man.

  • I think I have a idea which would increase the efficiency of this. You would have to use a larger cooler. Get an old air cooler from a turbo charged car from the junk yard. Pipe it so that the inner cooler is inside the ice box, and the fan draws air through the inner cooler. Just a thought. I may try that.

  • @onefarmville use a heater core. there is an Instructable on it, I just finished mine and am very pleased. check it out.

  • And what did you use to make the 24 cubic foot freezer in which to freeze your eight 2 liter bottles?*

    *Not to mention power it.

  • didnt work

  • could you do this with dry ice?

  • @Airsoftshooter1995

Not a good idea, dry ice emits alot of carbon dioxide....very bad for the hemoglobin. I've made one of these same setups with reg ice & soda bottles. I've found another downfall is the amount of humidity the ice creates. Will notice a smooth floor wood, linoleum etc will become very slippery or makes carpet soggy creating mildew. IMO, good for camping or short times in a car.

  • Will be making one of my own very soon.

  • Nice! but it sounds like aircraft..

  • @epoht105 i am going to make one to use for my dogs when I have to leave them in the in the back of my Durango, i don't think they will mind the noise, lol

  • use anti freeze

  • buy an inverter and get an air conditioner.

  • how many cfm fan is that?

  • try 2 fans

  • Sounds like a Boeing 747

  • The fan must not be too big because thers not enough time to damper large quantity of cold from the frozen bottles, attempt to place the fan pushes air into the "heat exchanger, below or beside the box so that the air passes the longer route among the frozen bottles great job !

  • what kind of plug in fan i can use and whic is better this one or the one with copper tubbing

  • you should have a curved pipe from the fan passing below the bottles into the exit pipe, that will give you more degrees below

  • Why yo you make the outcoming hole so small ? Make bigger and it cools faster.

  • @mrek94 The smaller hole obviously creates a better airflow. Who wants to huddle around something to cool off?

  • You should make a way to bottom and then the air goes from bottom to up and out. Then the air moves better between the bottles.

  • I built it, it works great but I adapted CAJUN Technology to it to reduce the amount of humidity it puts out. Using a 5"6" foot long 3" round aluminum vent pipe (4 foot sections sold at Home depot for $4) that goes almost to the ceiling allows the moisture to condensate in the pipe and most all of it drips back into the cooler. It also puts the cold up high which cools more airspace faster.

  • putting water bottles in the freezer causes more power consumption on the freezer to keep freezing the water, but still much cheaper than a window ac! great job!

  • cool idea! i built a solar can heater now I'm trying to figure out solar air hehe.

  • How long do the frozen bottles stay frozen, otherwise: how long can you use the same bottles? Please reply, thanks!

  • There are the type of items bedini motors would be great to use.

  • Amazing! Thanks for posting!

  • where i can buy this fan

  • it sounds loud on the cam...

  • Remember guys if you do this by frozen bottles from the fridge.. You will just create more heat in the house.. Since the heat created from the fridge when freezing the bottles will spread in the house... It will work if the area you have the fridge in is separated from the area you are trying to cool.. Remember that! :)

    Very nice creation!! :)

  • I love it your way of doing it is a winner in my opinion!!! Sweet thanx for posting!!!

  • THE PERSON WHO HAS PREPARED THIS A/C UNIT AND POSTED THIS VIDEO SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE HEROES OF THE UNITED STATES. I AM A DOCTORAL STUDENT AND HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO MONEY TO PAY FOR MY TUITION, OR FOR DECENT FOOD. I AM TRYING TO PUT MYSELF THROUGH COLLEGE DURING THE HARDEST TIMES OF MY LIFE. I CANNOT AFFORD A/C. IT IS NOW 10:28 IN NORTH FLORIDA AND THE WEATHER IS RIGHT NOW AT 92 DEGREES. I HAVE NOT SLEPT IN TWO NIGHTS. THANK YOU, SIR. GOD BLESS YOU. THANKS TO ALL GIVING TECH ADVICE.

  • Nice design, dude. It's good to see you're into solar too. I've been looking for something effective to run off of 12volts. I'm trying this.

  • ive got to try this. i dont have air conditioning so i definetly need this!

  • wow dude i have the exact same wooden floor. oh ya awsome idea with the ac

  • Enjoyed your vid. Rather than using plywood as a base I used a piece of 2" thick EPO foam, used dc fan also ran off my solar panels. Your absolutely right, it cools down a single room as I've used it the last few nights in the bedroom and it did chill it down. The concept of what it is definately deserves 2 thumbs up. I've taken it with me on the road yesterday, just plugged into the cig lighter, works really good for road trips in vehicles with\without functioning A\C.

  • If you need a small, powerful fan get an airbed fan. I have an 'aerobed' airbed and it came with a small fan which runs from a built in battery or it can be run from a car cigarette lighter using a cable. It can inflate an airbed in under 30 seconds. It must be much more powerful than the fan you are using.

  • I agree the fan is the key. The more airflow the better it will work.

  • @plaidzinc That is true, but the fan has to be rated for long runs. Most fans like the one in your airbed are normally rated to run for a few minuets.

  • @plaidzinc

Where can I get just the fan?? I assume your speaking of a fan that pumps up an air bed?? Can you get one at walmart? What are my options if I want to use a fan in my apartment and don't want to worry about moisture going up to the fan motor and causing an electrical problem or something like that??

  • Comment removed

  • Man I need to make one of these. I don't drink a lot of pop, so I thought of using the largest size of Ziplock freezer bags. Good work!!!!!!!!!

  • Can you post the links to build the air conditioner in the description please?

  • how big is the cooler?

  • what size cooler is that?

  • It holds eight 2 liter pop bottles, thats 16 liter, so with the extra space my guess is its a 20 liter size cooler. I don't know for sure I just picked one that held the most bottles.

  • Very loud , if there way to reduce this loud fan about 50% or more , would be the best 12V Air conditioner . Also the size should be smaller than this about 50% or more . and if its use water would be better because in the desert we haven't ice :( . im looking realy for 12v air conditioner for my roof top tent in hot summer but i didnt found best deal with products , because its so heavy , loud and big .

  • just tell me pls how much area that kind of ac keep cool?

  • the ice melts absorbing room heat. while the heat from the water is absorbed by refrigerant, and dissipated from the condenser coils back into the room. I guess it would work if the freezer is in a different room.

  • thanks i like it very much i am in dubai hear very hot pls tell me is this ac cool aroom like compreser ac? and how much time aftar u change ice? ty

  • Well Calgary aint that hot, so I only change the ice every 24 hours. sounds like you need to buy a off the shelf AC unit.

  • inspiring

  • if this wasn't so loud it would be much better..good design ..if u could build a rack in the cooler to allow the air inside the cooler to circulate better

  • Hi, the camera exaggerated the sound. its no louder than a regular fan turning.

  • great dude! it really works!

  • Thanks for share this!!!!!! God Bless you

  • i think this is more efficient than the a/c if you will make ice during the off peak hours.

  • very nice! hope to see more... thank you so much!

  • Ääneen vaikuttaa myös se millasen ulostulon tekee. Hyvä vois olla joku pyöristetty refleksiputki.

  • I made this finally, and it works sorta ok. I am using it at the moment in a small bedroom. Barely keeping the bdrm cool with outdoor temps of 80 degrees.

I also made a copper tubing ac which works fantastically in my LR for cooling. Now that copper tubing works like a charm! Difference is though that the copper tubing ac must have electricity. I'm trying to find an ac that works great with batteries in case of a loss of electricity so I'll keep looking. This has been an interesting experiment!

  • theres nothing like a quiet hum of an air conditioning unit to lull you to sleep on a hot summer night, lol.

  • i like it

  • awesome!!!! but man that is funny how the fan sounds so laud lol, I know it is just because how it recorded but still funny :)

  • the heat generated by your freezer to freeze those 2L pop bottles is what's making your place hot to begin with. Simple einsteinian physics; energy cannot be gained or lost. Go to walmart and spend $99 for a proper heat exchanger.

  • good , but is 2 noisy

i like the idea way u keep the ice bottle in the ice box xD

  • Love it!

This would work great in the cabin of my boat to keep it cool on those hot summer nights.

So basically one amp to run the fan.

Did you think about just using the original lid for running the fan and "air duct"?

  • If you use a styrofoam chest it it would be easier to cut the holes and no need to spray insulate I am thinking (cheaper, too). This will be my project for this weekend.

  • Thank you very much for this! now it's fall in Argentina but next summer I'm gonna make it!!

  • ok, interesting idea.. no need for cooper coil and a pump.. just forced air...kinda noisy tho..wonder if putting water in the cooler would help ?

  • Reminds me of Red Green Show! lol

  • some1 can tell me ,if put salt in can make the ice dissolve slowly ?

  • on my to building mine now ...thanks

  • this is great, thanks, i'll try it.

  • how cold could the air get?

  • I like what you did here! I want to build one like it this week. What are the parts you used and where did you get them? Hope you don't mind my asking. A 12v fan and cooler is all I got from this site. It looks like wet/dry vac parts on top....?

  • The fan is a cheap 12 volt two speed fan. Made in china available in Canada at Canadian tire, Check out lowes or home hardware in the states. The black directional outlet is plumbing parts.

  • Thnxs! I found one at Wal-Mart today. I also picked up a dashboard solar fold-out thingy that runs the fan, I tried them out today and it works great! Next I picked up a deep cell marine batteryfor use with the battery. I tried the copper with fan ac and liked it, so now I'll make one like yours to compare with. If my electric goes out again, I won't suffer while waiting for repairmen to show up. My dog will love that!

  • How long the ice in bottle can hold ?

  • \mine has lasted over twenty four hours.

  • hey man how big is your room? this gonna be the first thing on my to-do list next morning!! gotta take the hell out of my room...Malaysia is so fuckin hot country!!! lots of humid too

  • The room \i use it in is about 16'x10' , so 160 square foot room.

  • This is SO COOL! (pardon the pun!)...I just love the "red neck" ingenuity!! I can see myself making one of these one day for my tiny house that I will build! Thank you so much for posting this!

  • whats the quart size of that cooler? Im going to try it this weekend.

  • The cooler I used would hold eight two liter pop bottles, So depending on what size you use, just pick a cooler that will hold about eight quarts.

  • Quite a few people like to nit pick this project, but it works. And I'm happy with it. The greeny nit pickers are amazing though.

  • mine is better and thats true. i still like this one

  • I can see your well on your way to being a top notch HVAC man. Keep up the good work.

  • hey am not saying yours is bad i love it am just saying if you use a coil like i did it would work a lot better.

  • Thanks for the advice, Did you mean you used a radiator? Or do Americans call a radiator a coil?

  • no i used a radiator cuz am not going to pay 600$ for a coil like a hvac coil.

  • Whats to say he is not freezing the bottles with a 12v freezer from solar panels . there you go free power from solar !

  • somebody ...has to much time on his hands....

  • With the money you spend on freezing the water you could just buy an air conditioner. There is no free energy.

  • The money you spend freezing the water doesn't even compare to the money you spend having an air conditioner plugged all night long... It's true that's there's no free energy...

  • @salvadorscavuzzo : wrong, an energy saving AC will actually be better for your home than re-freezing bottles of water (opening/closing your freezer constantly has to be replenished). I had 3 AC units (energy efficient) costing me about $100 each cooling my entire house during the summer costing me less in electric than my 2 heaters during the winter.

  • I don't recall ever stating that it was free energy. And am not concerned about the price. I wanted cool without buying a off the shelf AC unit. That goal was achieved. Not only that but AC units have free fallen in price the last couple of years.

  • Why not just run air thru a tube that goes thru your fridge (or freezer)? isn't that the same thing? This "air conditioner" is basically putting the heat from the room into the bottles until ice melts and the water gets as warm as the room, then, you remove that heat from the bottles when you put them back in the freezer...
