  • I wish john hope was alive

  • Jim Cantore had hair?!?! O_o

  • Did anyone else notice that EVERY time there's a hurricane, the reporter stands in front of a palm tree? I notice that on almost every hurricane video.

  • @SuperSonicTailsEas it's actually the same palm tree each time - they truck it out to the sites. it's now the most senior member of the field team.

  • 5 people have no Hope.

  • where is dennis smith now?? i remember him being on the weather channel at least 10 years...

  • @domirules28 He's a behind the scenes Senior Meteorologist.

  • Wow -- Jim Cantore WITH HAIR?!?!?! Who knew!!

  • I haven't seen a WeatherSTAR 4000 in quite some time. I am old enough to remember the WeatherSTAR 3000, and possibly remember (at the time), my cable company using WeatherSTAR II around 1990 or so.

  • JIM!!

  • I was on the gulf coast for Andrew in Sarasota. It was intense.

  • @mpcolorado1421 Miramar

  • @mpcolorado1421 I lived in Jacksonville at the time. And we still got a bunch of rain from it.

  • @jmcampbell78 Heck yeah we did!!

  • Wow.. standing in a Category 5 hurricane. I don't know how one could manage that

  • @EndeavourLaunch Miramar

  • I hate jim cantore..he is too over the top. I love and miss john hope...I wanted to drink coco with John.

  • Wow, Jim Cantore has hair!

  • The Weather Channel from 1988 to early 1997 was a good time to watch in my opinion. They should bring back all of the classic maps used back then as well as the on air chryons as well.

  • Amen! My thoughts exactly.

  • I don't think they'll ever do that, not as long as a CORPORATE PIG like NBC Universal owns The Weather Channel!

  • I have a question. How did NBC Universal get ahold of The Weather Channel? I didn't see the transformation take place. It was just, one day, it was The Weather Channel...the next day, it was Wake Up With Al among other things.

  • Quite honestly, I don't really know how it happened. NBC Universal should've NEVER bought it from Landmark Communications. Now all the network is, is just a shadow of its former self.

  • I hear you. Maybe if enough of us complain to the corporation who bought TWC, they'll loosen their grip and TWC can go back to the way they used to be. Would that work? What I miss the most about TWC were the WeatherStar4000 graphics they used to use.

  • The good news is that our cable system in North Missouri STILL uses the WeatherStar 4000 system.

As for complaining to the corporation, they don't want to listen to us. All they care about is money, greed and power.

  • It does? Shoot. Our cable system is upgraded to the sick ass Interstar-whatever-it's called thing. As for the corporation...no offense, but they suck!

  • Well that's how corporations are nowadays. They don't give a rat's ass about the people. And I hate the Intellistar!

  • I'm sorry. Didn't mean to offend you. I was just stating my opinion on the corporation. I don't like the Intellistar either...thanks for the real name. I grew up with the older version of TWC with the WeatherStar 4000 and I miss seeing it. I guess all I got now are the videos of it on YouTube. : (

  • You didn't offend me. Its true! Corporations suck! Yeah, all we have now is the videos of the Classic Weather Channel here on Youtube.

  • That's true. But, I still wish TWC would go back to the way they used to be with all the real weather forecasting and the WeatherStar4000 graphics instead of the Storm Stories, When Weather Changed History, Wake Up With Al, and whatever else they have now. Stupid corporations.

  • I feel your pain, dude. Luckily a Youtuber by the name of theweatherchazz is preserving the CLASSIC Weather Channel, the way it supposed to be.

  • I know. I've seen some of his videos and they are very well done.

  • I think so too. He must have really studied long and hard to replicate it.

  • It's done with an emulator, I think. Man, I wish I had an emulator like that.

  • It is taiganet's WeatherStar 4000 emulator. You can download it, just look it up in Google.

  • According to the website, I need some kind of Microsoft thing with a service pack to run the emulator program. This computer has had many problems with viruses (along with a couple crashes), so I don't know if I feel safe with downloading this program...at least, not now, anyway. This is my dad's computer, too, so I have to make sure he feels okay with it before I do this. Our security system is not fully functioning and we don't know how to fix it.

  • I see.

  • I've seen better graphics on the nintendo NES!

  • jim cantore has aged a lot since andrew!

  • I love the old weather channel intro song. I want it played at my funeral.

  • ha ha ha!

  • i was 13 year old want hurrican andrew hit in miami florida was scary alot i was nurves

  • @redoma2008 LMAO I have almost idea what the hell you just said but you at least still TYPE like you're 13.

  • What happened to Dennis? Why was this "historical" as Jim said? And if anyone knows where I can get a full, clean version of the song played at the beginning, I would appreciate it. It would make a sweet ringtone.

  • Didn't even know the Weather Channel was around back then.

  • its been around since 1984

  • No, TWC had been around since 1982. You were pretty close.

  • I never knew Dennis did field work!

    That is, used to....

  • WOW! Look at Jim Cantore

  • Wow, when jim cantore had haid. nice.

  • wow the weather channel looks so old

  • We once left from a vacation house in North Carolina, and just a day or two later a hurricane passed by.

  • man i was a kid when that happened i got up at about 4:00 am and went in the closet because i couldn't stand all the noises outside and the doors were shaking back and fourth that go outside

  • I don't think I'll ever forget Andrew (hell, who would) I moved from South Florida just months before it hit

  • I hate The Weather Channel is no longer hardcore like this with severe weather coverage. This was back when TWC was enjoyable to watch. Another side note...I miss John Hope. I like Lyons but this guy is irreplaceable.

  • Well during hurricane season there's they get some good footage

  • @TornadoWarning You are right. I had watched the Weather Channel from Day 1 back in the 80s. It has morphed into this huge commercial industry. Its not that bad though where I hate it, but I no longer feel that family type personality it had back then Dennis Smith, Mark Mancuso, John Hope, Bruce Edwards, etc., etc. Those OC Meteorologists were what carried the Channel. It was a different time back then, and it shows on all networks how time can change formats, and viewer appreciation.

  • @TornadoWarning what are you talking about the weather channel has been hardcore the last 5 years, live hurricane coverage multiplied by 5-6 broadcasters, way better then this clip, now they actually stay put in the harshest part of the storms and report every detail.

  • @MastaGT This comment was 2 years ago when they WEREN'T hardcore. I can remember several tornado outbreaks when they showed "Storm Stories" or other programming instead of covering the event. In the last year or so, they have ramped up their coverage again in the wake of those complaining that they weren't covering storms like they used to. I'm a tv meteorologist, in the business almost 10 years so I know what I'm talking about. I have friends and colleagues that work and have worked at TWC.

  • my name is andrew and i was born in 92!! and wow Cantore has hair!

  • So Cantore did have hair

  • That's me!

  • I have a Hurricane Andrew too!! He was born on the 15th anniversary of this Hurricane Andrew!!!!!!! When he gets older he'll kick my butt, but right now it's funny!!

  • Lol awesome.

  • I NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO

    looking for friends en

  • look at jim cantore back then lmao

  • Yeah, he had hair back then. LOL

  • Dennis Smith is not dead. He just moved to another station.

  • is dennis smith dead

  • i was in north miami,i was 11 at the time and it was awful,we walked outside as the eye went right over the top of us

  • I was 11 too. I was living in Lower Coverdale in NB in Canada, but I remember being so scared for all of the residents.

  • I was in florida city......it was terrible!

  • great video and I really agree this is how to cover a hurricane, as I kid this is how I developed my interest in weather

  • I was in Cutler Ridge during this storm in a shelter... it was some crazy shit!!! Our house was completely destroyed. We left with the shirts on our backs.

  • my name is andrew

  • I remember this hurricane and John Hope. I was 11 when the hurricane hit and i remember it like it was yesterday. It was ALL over the news and i couldn't stop watching it!

  • JIM CATORE HAD HAIR??? Whoa

  • LMFAO!

  • id be nervous if it came to new jersey because thats where i lived.

  • HAIR!! HAIR!! He had Hair!

  • If there are such things as lassic storms, this is one of them!

  • pls if anyone know what cat this was??

  • Andrew was a cat 5

  • geez, how old is jim cantore now?

  • he is 44

  • The most terrifying night of my life, our car was blown upside down, our house was demolished, it was a huge nightmare.

  • jim is now bold

  • I was 18 and we were in Cutler Ridge. The roof came off-it was the most terrifying night I have ever experienced

  • in WILMA i was in ROYAL PALM BEACH my ffin power went out and has been out for 3 weeks... oh yay if i was 2 years older i would have been in ANDREW

  • i was in my mom's belly! :D

  • SO was I!!

  • OMG!! what where you doing there!?!?!?!

  • wow! at the time I was living near MIA, I was about 5 years old but remember quite vividly the night the hurricane hit and the aftermath. YOU'RE NOT A TRUE MIAMIAN IF YOU DIDN'T GO THROUGH ANDREW =D

  • i was 5 years old too! i was in kendall when it happen. i still remember that.

  • So that's what Jim Cantore looks like with hair...

  • Wow takes me back. I remember staying in some quality inn hotel near Miami airport. The windows started to blow up inside the hotel rooms. The building was also shaking pretty scarey I was about 12 so I was scared to death.

  • Yep...I will never forget it. I was near Dadeland. Happened pretty much exactly 16 years ago...right now.

  • Me 2 i was 3 i remember openin the door and it swung clean off...i was so bad then and crazy

  • I lived in Homestead when this one hit but luckily I don't remember much beacuse I was only 4 when it went thru

  • I lived in Coral Gables at the time. What an unbelievable experience this was.....

  • I was 20 in Miami at the time. Never forget it.

  • Man, I remember this when I was a little kid, I was on vacation with my family in Orlando when it hit! WOW!! lol.

  • Good video of Jim, looks like he took a trip to the weight room, before going on the air that night lol.

  • OMG! Jim has hair!

  • I remember watching the Weather Channel as a kid in the early 90's while every other kid was watching Barney. lol

  • me too.. TWC takes me back as a kid everytime I see or hear the archives.

  • Yeah. I just noticed that Cantore has hair!

  • haha yeah, that was totally me too!

  • Weather Channel was so much better back then. They really went downhill when they split with the NWS. Now they make up their own local forecasts which tend to be inaccurate.

  • wow jim cantore actually had hair that time :D

  • I've been watching TWC since 1990. I actually watch this opposed to watching TV. I remember this news cast vividly as I lived in North Miami Beach when Andrew hit. The Doppler radar images are very classic. This was a chilling night. BTW, RIP John Hope; you will be missed.

  • Completely agree, although I was too young to appreciate watching this on the TV in '92. Still love to watch it now, and John Hope was the best - RIP!

  • LOLZ JIM CANTORE HAD HAIR THEN HE LOOKED TEH FUNNAYZ...LMAO.

Dennis Smith was on a couple times in the evening in October 2005. So he's not dead.

Oh, and Mike Seidel's funny spanish was funny too.

I was a baby then...by the way my name is Andrew and I was born in March 1992 :D

  • John Hope, one original gone. Is Dennis Smith still working at The Weather Channel? I know Jim Cantore is still there.

  • Jim Cantore is now Evening Edition. But also is the voice for Storm Stories.

  • I haven't seen Dennis Smith working for The Weather Channel in several years. Shame, really. :(

  • i wonder what the music was like on it back in the 80's? i knwo they played good stuff in the 90's

  • the music was actually better when I was a kid in the '80s. They played hit background music such as the Eurythmics "here comes the rain again" instrumental part during local "NWS forecasts." The weather channel is too "glossy" now... :(

  • You're right about how TWC has changed. The thing that originally set them apart is what they're trying to lose every season. More sensationalist junk, and less and less weather.

Funny thing about Hurricane Andrew: I can distinctly remember Mike Seidel TRYING to read an emergency notice IN SPANISH for residents of Florida...his reading was so bad; like he'd never seen Spanish. Hilarious now.

  • I hate TWC now. If I see one more when weather changed histroy promo Im gonna jump. I swear. I will do it.

  • The correspondent has my respect.

  • I've seen it on a part of "Storm Stories" on the Weather Channel once - or i think so

  • This is the type of professionalism that you'll never see on TWC nowadays. TWC was almost somewhat of a public service back in those days, closely aligned with the Nat'l Weather Service (which they now avoid if at all possible, even removing mentions of NOAA Weather Radio from NWS advisories before they scroll them). TWC is now just another typical entity in this vast "zoo" of cable media, relying on sensory overload to fulfill their purpose which is to entertain and/or scare.

  • Jim Cantore with hair. looks better with hair than without it. Poor Dennis Smith. I feel sorry for those people that go to be at the site of the storm. Then on one clear day, you see Jim... run, a hurricane is comin.

  • Ah, the good ol' days of The Weather Channel. This was great to see.

  • Dennis should get inside ASAP, that would IMO show people how dangerous these stroms are.

  • Cantore used to have hair!

  • I know I agree, I first saw TWC in 1992 when they were talking about Hurricane Andrew!!

  • I received my meteorology degree from Penn State back in '96... We talked a lot about the "sensationalism" of the weather back then in '95 and '96.. so much about about ratings..etc It continues.. ten years later

  • The Weather Channel looks a lot better back then than it does now.

  • Yeah now its like your in your town, then you see Catore there.. your like.. OH GOD LEAVE US!

  • yeah, was much better back then. TWC is turning into what MTV did, all shows no music videos! It's becomming all shows, no weather!! RIP John Hope.

  • slowmanEF, whaddya mean "all shows, no weather"? Hey, at least they put shows on 7pm and 11pm on weeknights and 5pm, 7pm, 9pm, 11pm and 1am on weekends (Eastern Time)! At least they put the "L-Bar" on the 8s during Storm Stories or Forecast Earth. But they still show weather! Hey, if you don't wanna watch TWC because of the shows and the "hype", then don't watch it. There's always your local 24-hr. digital TV weather station or NBC Weather Plus or those other weather websites. Just my 2 cents.

  • I am not hating by any means. I've been watching TWC everyday since I was 9 years old man. I just don't like the path I'm seeing. That's all!

  • That's right, 15 years already. Damn! My new house is already 15 years old.

  • This is a very cool video! And yes, The Weather Channel was better then, And RIP John Hope! If somebody can get local TV coverage of Andrew that would be GREAT!

  • I'm with ya'll. I really miss John Hope. His reports were so in-depth and informative. He knew how to keep us ahead of the storm in every sense. And I also think Jim Cantore looked a lot better in those days than he does now.

RIP, John Hope. You are sorely missed!

  • yeah so that how the weather channel look like back then

  • This was Jim Cantore's best peformance to date at TWC. Man, nowadays, The Weather Channel is now The Global Warming Channel. Oh, and RIP John Hope. WAY better than Steve Lyons. I miss these days.

  • Weird seeing Jim Catore in the studio and not in the thick of things.

  • Oh yeah, and I just wanna say, John Hope is WAY better than Steve Lyons. RIP John Hope...

  • Good stuff... Jim Cantore was 100 times better when he didn't have to act so serious, with his overly serious forecasts and bald head...

  • He is bald cause of Steroid Usage

  • I really miss when The Weather Channel used to be like this.

  • really cool
