Because something in the States would be considered offensive does not mean that the rest of the world should consider those same things offensive on face value. Of course there are things that should be considered universally inappropriate, but I hardly think something that entails this much historically knowledge (of a foreign country's history) meets those merits.

Australia has a rich history of racism. Much like other colonies of imperial britain, aboriginal children were stolen from their families, raped, and taught to assimilate into white culture. This performance exemplifies the entrenched racism in Australian society. The fact that it took two performances of this "minstrel" show for some to realize how offensive this is, shows how far Australian media and society has come in the past few decades and how far it still has to go.

It depends on the type of person as to whether or not this is funny, but as people have pointed out and these people have explained they were not trying to be racist. What they were was culturally insensitive to people in a completely different country, and they apologised, so its ok. If you want an example of racism presented as humour look at the representation of 99% of white Australians by Hollywood. And we take it.

I can understand Americans being offended(the past tradition of "blackface" routines in that country), but in Australia no such traditions existed, and most Australians would have no knowledge about that sort of thing (unless they've studied American history). Therefore, one cannot really say this act was racist....unless we're all supposed to know everything about America's history regardless of where we live.
BTW, don't know if it's relevant but a couple of these guys were Indian.

Because something in the States would be considered offensive does not mean that the rest of the world should consider those same things offensive on face value. Of course there are things that should be considered universally inappropriate, but I hardly think something that entails this much historically knowledge (of a foreign country's history) meets those merits.

Who does this act hurt? I mean, it's only offensive if you choose to be offended and I wasn't. The act didn't appear to be poking fun at black people it seemed to be poking fun at the Jackson Five.
