Never heard "Kay-Go", although both crosstown rivals used verbal shorthand (in-house for years before it ever crept into on air promotion).
One was KPIX; obviously "Kay-Pix".
The other, KRON, had at one time been owned by the San Francisco Chronicle, long known as "The Chron". Eventually, the single syllable was applied to the station.
@dinfg6 That was never an FCC mandate. Ratings services combined them all in a single metro (market designation), and broadcasting consultants decreed station IDs should give a shout out to each area so viewers (or listeners, for radio) would "feel included" and be loyal to the station.

Pete Wilson, you're the man. Stay tight, dude. As for the open, nice edits of the NS2K. In fact, I think this might be the first station to use NS2K for an open, none the less, this arrangement.
Pete Wilson Will always be remembered for making the Hayward Fault a national issue. Also He was one of the first people on KGO who had to tell the Nation with Anna Chavez and Cheryl Jennings on ABC News about Loma Prieta.
I only remembered Pete working on KGO because of how the atmosphere back in Sacramento during the 80's, one of our TV's could pick up Bay Area stations. He was the best newsman for the Bay Area.
What does that mean? "Interesting"? People die. It's very sad, but it is a natural course of human existence. Jensen succumbed to cancer, Wilson to blocked arteries. Please try to avoid conspiracy theories. These were great men who deserve better.
KGO had a pretty unique open, similar in nature to WPVI. They were top of the line when it came to opens. KABC on the other hand followed WABC and WLS when it came to opens by keeping it simple.
Will also add...if i remember the credit rolls...they had a guy, Wiley something, who worked in house and designed their sets; 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997...the exception being the 1985 set that was a replica of KABC/WLS/WABC when they moved into their new building on Front street. His 1997 set was quickly dismantled again in 98 when the GM from WLS arrived an installed a replica of their set. Might also explain the oddball overly creative music cuts.
Susan Gregory had come from KCRA in Sacramento a few months before this (I had a tape of KCRA from May of 84 with her on it but I lost it). I don't think she was at KGO very long.
do they read this kgo or k-go?

I had no idea John Buren worked in San Francisco prior to coming to WJZ in Baltimore

@UIWWildthing Yeah, he had a cup of coffee here in the bay area back in the 80's. His style didn't go over well as he only lasted a year.

KVII in Amarillo, TX had a opening like KGO-TV around 1980-1986

When did the FCC mandated that all SF stations must include Oakland and San Jose in Station ID's

My how I miss this theme music! RIP Pete Wilson. You had replaced the earlier crew that I remembered as a kid: Van Amburg, Jennings, Giddings.

Interesting that the person who replaced Jerry Jensen is also dead too

I guess its sorta like WPVI, they just wanted to be different from your average O&O. Personally, i like this music cut from NS2k.

These old clips of KGO annoy me. They had the same music packages and graphics as the other O&Os... yet insisted on editing them in oddball ways.
