September 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Hoffnung's untimely death, aged just 34. In the modern world, it hardly needs saying that we need more Hoffnungs to remind us not to take life - or indeed music - too seriously.
The original Surprise Symphony has always been quite dull for me, because I encountered the Hoffnung Music Festival first!
