  • This may be Keith Richards' favorite Buddy song. He has done this in concert.

  • I'm a bit older as I was born in the '50's & I can attest to the influence of this man in the music of those days. I understand how utterly heartbreaking it was to lose Buddy Holly along with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens that fateful day. I was only about 8 years old at the time but his songs played on the radio--which my parents always had on--and the teenagers who were some of my aunts & uncles, were nuts about the guy. To this day, it grieves me that he's gone. The loss was immense.

  • Timeless. It's not a 50's song, 60's song... its a timeless song. Buddy Holly IS Rock and Roll.

  • Pierced my heart.

  • That voice!!!!!! . . . .WOW!

  • Buddy did it all--sing, compose..what a genius. No one can replicate his unique singing style.

  • His voice, among other things, is flawless here.

  • Why am I surprised at how great this song is? Note to self: it's Buddy Holly, bonehead! Peace, everyone. Love each other.

  • My God, this is brilliant.

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • 1 person didnt learn the game

  • 5***** Such a giant.

  • I'm glad so many people like this video that I posted. You can read my blog on it at those 3 w's, then jmeshel, then a period, then com. Then search for the song titile. Pretty clever workaround, right?

  • when you listen to his music it makes me almost forget he is gone when I do realise it makes me feel like my heart is sinking in dispair. r.i.p buddy holly. Im going to the sight where the plane crashed and the surf ballroom. my grandma remembers hearing it on the news and she was upset.

  • just fantastic

  • After listening to the post humous dubs, I firmly believe that is how the song should stay. As Buddy's last recorded song, it bears a special presence being a solo acoustic song.

  • this is my new favorite song!

  • One of his richest and most complex little pop songs. Imagine if he were still with us now. So sad. Long live Buddy Holly!

  • I'd say half of BH's very best material was released after he died, this I beleive is proof that he would have gone on to remain big for quite a while, he still had plenty of steam but like everyone says, his life was cut short. We can only guess where he would've went had he not gone on that plane.

  • In my opinion, this is Buddy's best song.

  • @Deltoro1959 It certainly is one of his best. Another one not so well know is Heartbeat, very beautiful tune and nice vocals. You may already know it but I thought I'd mentiond it anyway. :-)

  • Easily the saddest Buddy Holly song. It gets me every time. In addition to the content, this is the last Buddy Holly song recorded. Eerily good quality for being an apartment recording...

  • A bone chilling song. Listening through electrostatics powered by Mark Levinson has left me wondering whether the fatal plane crash in 1959 really happened. When I lived 4 blocks away from the Brevoort I didn't know but now I will remember, forever.

  • @4711rock do you mean he may have had a gun on that flight?

  • ¶ Many of Buddy's best songs were on the apartment tapes. All the releases with Picks or Fireballs are great, respectful, important.

¶ I'm positive this was unconscious inspiratin for Paul McCartney's "For No One" of 1966.

  • A former bandmate of mine, and later good friend was Larry Welborn, Buddy's first bass player. He played bass on That'll be the Day and Looking for Someone to Love. They were childhood friends and remained close throughout Buddy's life. Larry told me that Buddy had written another verse for this song (which he taught me). He changed the "Learning the Game" line in each. The last line after all the heartbreak dealt with seeking new love. "And that's when you're learning the game."

  • so simple, so good -- a great, great, great songwriter

  • agreed "wing" for me what they did to this and th other 59 "personal" recordings was not good

Mind you I am a Clovis '56 man and think his early stuff the best

  • This is the best of his recordings of this. Doesn't warrant too much instrumental. Can make it seem 'clunky'. Lovely song.
