Your manager should have never gotten you involved in the first place by pulling you and your coworker into his/her office. You approached your manager with a concern and he or she should have witnessed it for himself/herself and then pulled your co-worker into his or her office and dealt with the problem at hand.

man you definitely are NOT wrong. I have been in the same situation more times then I can count. You are right the reason the reason why he got pissed is cause he got caught. I have done the same thing plenty of times. I work in a call center...and it is like really busy most of the time and we got people that will just sit there in ACW..which is basicly sitting their picking their ass avoiding taking calls but still getting paid so they getting paid to avoid working lol.
