My grey cat jumps onto my lap while I'm at my PC since he's almost invisible on the dark rug , then curls up and purrs. It gets problematic when he starts kneading my legs and chest (ouch!).

I've been told they behave like that when they believe you are their mother. If your cat tries to "kneed bread" on your stomach or chest and gets all zoned out and blissful... you've become the mother of a cat. Once that happens, his kitten behavior will last his entire life. I had a cat that died at 20 years old and was still acting like a kitten till his last moments. Enjoy the affection and don't discourage it, you are being a good mama to your cat.
