guys i want to install it in an external HDD, but the drive already contains some files that i want to use with XP. will i be able to use these files in xp and will they be safe from the install of ubuntu?
personally i dont like running a machine with windows and ubuntu BOTH on them, and if you want to save your files, i dont know man, you could lose them, it could save them, it all depends on how you partition it
well, all distros must have the same stability (unless you are using unstable versions) since they work with the same linux kernel.
The only differences i can tell is that the distros based on redhat, use the RPM package manager. The distros based on debian use the .deb packages (like ubuntu). I don't think there's a great difference since you can convert .deb in RPM.
The other important thing is that some distros are oriented to desktop users (like ubuntu, openSuse, mandriva). And other distros are oriented to servers (like debian). If you need to host a webpage, mail services, intra-nets, accounts management, and many other services, well, you need Debian. But if you need to play games (real games, like GTA, WoW, battlefield 1942, counter-strike), listen to your favorites mp3, watching dvds, view and work-out you photos, Opensuse or Ubuntu are for you.
the only thing IMO keeping back users from using Linux is the whole compiling thing...and configuration..I used Ubuntu for a while but it was kinda lagy maybe compiz ain't that good for me:P
@ anonymous123asd...sad Ubuntu is the worst, i wonder if he ever used it ...if you read this let;s here from you WHAT distro is the best? :)
my PC is crappier than yours, but its running PERFECT ubuntu 8.04LTS.,and ,ofc, the 9.04(test release).most stable OS ive ever seen (comapred to fedora, suse, debian, solaris, windows)
so these 3d desktop feature is standard with ubuntu? if I used ubuntu and the ubuntu windows emulating document editor, would it be compatible if i sent documents to my school computer which uses windows?
What is the recording application your using? I use recordmydesktop, but it uses so much processing power that it nearly paralyzes the whole system when I try to use sphere and cube effects. Also, love the video.
you dont need to install the cube or anything, you just need to add the compiz settings wizard in your add or remove programs. search advanced compiz settings, advanced compiz is what i usually do, make sure you have all available apps available for search, and install the advanced compiz settings wizard. go to system - preferences - compizconfig settings manager and edit the effects and settings to your liking, good luck

Just go to Applications - Add/Remove- And type "Advanced Desktop Effects" And you will see a program just download it and install it!
mockstoday 3 years ago
it's technically only "Desktop Effects" but yes...you're definitely right.
Just don't want anybody to get confused.

SseBb 3 years ago
because of that we need to stop using windows. To encourage companies to build software for linux.
