Somewhere around 30 seconds you played and 8th note a half a step too low. Not sure which one. just thought you should know in case you read it wrong.
This is just superb!! What a wonderful instrument you've made and you've managed to capture the essence in the keyboard texture of 17th C music! You also phrase and communicate your art beautifully!
I love your addition of the triplet figures that you add on those sustained notes. I perform mine with a continuous trill or a short one, but I think I will experiment with the triplets- they work well!
Absolutely fascinating! That you could actually build this lovely instrument and play it. I'm a former student of Kenneth Gilbert, one of the earliest Canadian harpsichordists. The only tip I'd give you for playing it is to remember it's a "plucked string" amd because there is no tonal variation .... you have to create a "crescendo" by slowing down ... a little ":rubato". Gilbert used to pause just a moment on the climax of a phrase. Then the music "lives'. Not so strict tempo.
@nikkitytom Good advice! I love the playing of Kenneth Gilbert--drew me to the harpsichord as a young musician. How fortunate you are to have studied with him.
How long have you played harpsichord and piano? I'm a beginner pianist but I quite like the harpsichord and it looks like a lot of fun to play as well maybe one day i will give it a go!
How long did it take you to build it? Very nice instrument.
My hps builder friend said he would sell me one built from a kit for 7,000 (fixed up) but I can't afford it because of my age :( I'm begging for it for my bday present!
Beautiful harpsichord and beautiful playing! One thing I'd advise you to watch out for is your steadiness. While I adore Bach's music, I hate him all the same for having music that demands strict adherence to the tempo, lol. Regardless, you play very well. I remember playing this piece when I was 11 or 12, lol.
oww heavens, let me visit you and let me play one time on the loveley Harpsichord again .. just loveley instrument ! quite hard to if you are use to piano ! I have 2 uploads from a harpi, and I just love the sound .. and wonderfull preformance again mister !
Impressed that you made it! And its nice to hear the alternative version of the invention- well played. Do you think that soundboards work like violins- that they get "broken in" harmonically over time?
Such a great harpsichord, nice man. I've never played a 1 manual harpsichord, just 2 manual. I bet another manual would have been difficult to build...lol. I can't imagine what goes into building one. Nice work, I would love to see more of this instrument.
That was very clean clean and tasteful. I like your tempo, I think it is often played too fast, as if it were a showpiece. Your speed lets it breathe a bit.
The main lid (you can't see the flap in this vid, as it's folded back) says: Music is the companion of joy and the cure of sadness.
I might have to do a 'making of' vid, showing off my painting and building and such. I don't know if people would be interested, though, cause I wouldn't be playing, just narrating...
@GaleoDeus really wonderful !! but I think in post classic latin the translation for "laetitia" is more "beauty"/"grace". However I agree, here "joy" is better, replying "tristis".
For "comes" too, in post classic it's the teacher and not the companion so maybe, because there is no verb, you can translate "Music teachs joy and cure sadness"...(that why I love latin ;-) there are so many translations possible !) Anyway very impressive and extremly beautiful work !!
@GaleoDeus Is this instrument so "authentic" that they copied the mistakes? 'laetitiae' may occur as 'letitie' or 'letitiae' but never as 'letitae'. The lack of parallellism between 'letitae' and 'tristis' is also puzzling. One would expect either 'musica laetitiae comes medicina tristitiae' (music is the companion of gladness and the cure of sadness) or 'musica laeti comes medicina tristis' (music is the companion of the glad and the cure of the sad).

Your playing increased since the oldest video of this piece, you know?
But the wrong note at bar 11 - 0:35 - (a C instead of a C sharp) is still there.
By the way, now that you play it faster, it sounds even better.

Very nice instrument. I would also be interested in the "making of" (you can record some music for the film, even if it is narrating)
Bravo

I can't comment on your playing (other than that it's good enough for my ears) but I'm very impressed that you made the instrument yourself!
btw, Couperin and Scarlatti are favourites of mine if you can play them?
lsur04 2 years ago 5
Scarlatti is definitely on the menu in the near future. Now that all my spare time isn't devoted to making the instrument, I can actually practice!
