Also and far more importantly, speed isn't everything. I could listen to the lead to Stargazer over and over, not because it gets fast but because it builds. It starts at one point moves to a climax and calms. Yngwie has all the skill and polish to do that, but more often chooses to go with flash and speed over the substance of his earlier music. Songwriting is a separate talent from lead playing.
Ygnwie/ Maiden was my first show, and love his work. But being faster doesn't make him better.
This is like arguing that because someone does clever things with Hendrix's music that they're better than him. Is Yngwie a faster guitarist? Yes. He's very gifted and has tons of technique. "Whos the best guitarist" arguments are fucking stupid. Every talented guitarist has something he's good at. Why compare em? Just enjoy it, or dont enjoy it. But at least take it at face value rather than as a stupid contest you aint in.
Yngwie is great at what he does. Great. But his mercurial habbit of being a dick kills his likeability. He's good at that neo crap. Blackmore is a REAL guitar player that can do more than the Yngflin Myspring SAME riffs and licks stuff.

And Paganini is remembered by some people as something like "the diabolical violinist" (I´m a Paganini´s fan too by the way). Sad but true, but the genial musical compositions always seems to beat virtuosism in the humans musical taste. I dont know why, but it seems like that.

@HyperfastMalmsteen dude yngwie cant compose like blackmore. being a great guitarist ISNT about playing fast (though even in that area blackmore was way ahead of his time). the thing is blackmore writes very inspired riffs, solos and songs which is something yngwie will never be able to match up to. since you like comparing, its like comparing a toyota hundai (yngwie) that is nice looking and can be fast to a mercedes (blackmore)...
@billygnrvr If you really knew Yngwie's style then you would realise something great. He can play "any" style of guitar/genre BUT decided long ago he would try something different and stick to it regardless of what people say, true it's not about fast playing but don't forget he's a virtuoso, he has a title to keep. The compositions of his orchestras(done by himself) and his songs are unique and when it comes to the notes he plays unless you know what he's doing then it just sounds crappy.
@skaaaaaater i do know yngwies style and NO he cant play 'any' genre. if you dont believe me see him try playing blues. it sucks, he puts the same fiddley-didley stuff in. 'unless you know what he's doing'? haa i thought music was suppose to sound great, not being broken up into theoretical analytical structures so people can like it just because they appreciate what weird scale/notes the person used. Also his compositions were good when they cameout, after tat it bacame boring.
@billygnrvr Don't get me wrong, blues has absolutely nothing to do with just speed nor just the scales. He can indeed play the blues, his hendrix covers might have had fast licks but if u listened closely u would've felt wat he was playing. Music is supposed to sound great but every individual has his own tastes in music. Some ppl say ahh too slow, too dry, too melodic or too simple. Theory just helps u understand wat's going on btw. In compliments to that, ur ears need to fully hear everything.
@HyperfastMalmsteen Extremly naive thinking mate. If musicianship would only be about skill then the best guitarists in the world would be Paco De Lucia and other crazy flamenco guitarists, not to even mention all the ultra skilled jazz / jazz fusion guitarists out there. Some people chose to create, some people chose to recreate. The definition between Blackmore and Yngwie.
you say malmsteen plays without feeling..i am so tired of you people..jump on yngwie hater bandwagon..no feel, only fast, can´t play..bla bla bla..MOTHER FUCKER MAKE A VIDEO AND SHOW ME WHAT FEELING IS..when you will do that and ill say hmm..okay he has feeling what ever that means..then ill say you are right about yngwie..but until then shut your mouth bitch..if you can play all the scales really fast and clean and has a good tone and vibrato and play good stuff...that´s it.
Ok, NOT Bernie Torme? Do you actually mean Steve Morse, not Steve Morris? As this is not DP, did SteveMorse play some with Gillan before latest DP incarnation? Don't believe he did, i could be wrong.
ah, thanks! lost track of 'Gillan' after the Torme days. I have the 'Live on the BBC' cds, they sound REAL good! Perhaps shoulda been bigger than he was (in the states anyhow.) BT's stuff is good too.
The sound is not the greatest, that is for sure. But, the mic that is being used to record the show is not the best. It is probably just a camcorder. So, you have to be a little liberal on how you judge the performance. However, dispite the low quality recording, what amazes me is how well Ian can sing. This guy sounds just like the album. I think is one the most consistent singers in rock. Freddie Mercury was able to sound just like his albums as well.
don't agree. sometimes Ian would sing so badly it looked like a bit of disrespect for the audience and a race for money. and unfortunately his singing ability really decreased in the late 90s. I believe it is a loss of breathing capacity. or maybe he just doesn't care much. if you need examples - Moscow 98 and 2002.
...absolutely agree...nothing works as when Ritchie plays...I've been lucky and I've seen Purple so many years ago, 'round '74, and it's unforgettable the sensation I've felt. I've seen the shining talent of all them pass through my body!!
Yngwie better than Blackmore?? what the fuck are you saying?
in a technical view, maybe Yngwie is better than Ritchie, but being good guitarist doesn't meen ONLY to have good technique, coz guitarist is MUSICIAN, not sportsmen.
and if we compare them as compositors, Ritchie is probably the GREATEST guitarist in the world
hi people. my name is SANDRO SEIXAS and i wanna tell you IAN GILLAN gave his authorization to record one of his brillhant songs called DON´T HOLD ME BACK.
i´m the only brasilian singer that is going to record GILLAN´s song.
my albun is coming up soon. hope you listen to and enjoy. you also can listen to me here in youtube writing KÚRIA- CHILD IN TIME.
@georgiansolitaire i also love ritchie´s technique, and composition, but don´t forget yngwie composed so many classics as well, using blackmore´s licks but anyway,i love those songs
@georgiansolitaire Ansver is simple:Malmsteen always plays Ritchies songs (just like more best guitar players) Bur Ritchie Blackmore isnot playing songs of other Guitarists!
@yngwiemalmsteen8 Tell when Yngwie composed anything like Highway Star, Mistreated or even Burn! Whithout Blackmore Yngwie shouldn't even play the way he does.
@yngwiemalmsteen8 You haven't considered the 2nd part of my sentence, and btw I love Malmsteen playing, I'm not trying to say he's bad, but c'mon Blackmore is his master, you can hear Blackmore in his playing!
probably in only his 1st 10yrs here in the US, YM spawned more great guitarists, if not pure wannabes, than RB has in his entire career. I never heard bands in the 70-80's trying to sound like Blackmore or Rainbow, however TONS of guitarist and bands since YM have tried to attain his sound/technique and neoclassical style. The blues/rock marriage had already been made when RB came on the scene. Maybe someone tried (UliRoth?) but Yngwie made famous the marriage of classical/metal, agree?
answer to some others on the ego thing:why is the bassplayer standing center stage, not once but twice, isn't it Gillans' band? Why is Yngwie standing behind the guitarist or bassist for most of this jam (and once behind both all together,)and only steps forward to the SIDE of the stage for his solo, which wasn't extended? The ego thing is an all-to-convenient target for the haters these days, with no substance.
I love Yngwie but that was awful. Seems to me you should respect your peers and play the tune and not puke all over it...That drummer is a selfish unmusical asshole ! "Hey drummer dude, I'll blow you away anytime anywhere, AND, show you how it's done properly" !
Actually that's pretty much how Blackmore used to do it live. Somebody needed to tell that guy with the Explorer (is that a bass?) to move the fuck out of the way.
I love Gillan, Deep Purple, and even Yngwie, but this was a total mess. With everyone bopping around on stage doing their own thing with no sense of cohesion . . . it reminded me of one of those really awful "all star jams" where they throw a bunch of VIP megastars on a stage and let them all butcher a classic. It also kind of reminded me of those "rock and roll fantasy camps" where you got some stars jamming and a bunch of noobs just plonking around on stage. This was bad.
@jwatson626 You are totally right!!! In this concret meaning and generally too. (All fest jams are terrible! I had the possibility to take part in a few, but rather avoided the stage.)
@guyfred666 I love a song with 63 vocalists and 47 lead guitar solos. "We're Stars" is a great example --- yeah, you're all stars and you should stay that way in your own bands. Too many Chiefs and no Indians. What the heck?
@guyfred666 I just can't deal with Satriani, or Vai for that matter. I need a song that I can sing along to, not 3 hours of acrobatic noodling on the neck and whammy. Don't get me wrong, I respect their talent, but it just doesn't do anything for me. Yngvie, on the other hand, always worked well for me. Catchy licks, good vocalists. He may pay them all 30 cents an hour, but he puts together a good team regardless.
@jwatson626 yeah, and changing vocalists gives so much fresh air to his music,i also prefer singing songs instead of just listening, love singing now your ships are burned or spotlight kid for example

Considering Blackmore's added a repertoire of Renaissance and MidEival pieces to his Blues,
Baroque, Jazz, Rockabilly, Beat, Skiffle, Acid/Psychedelic, Heavy Rock and Metal, I'd say he's more versatile than just about any heavily recorded pro out there. Granted he did leave Purp as you say, but he was already known then for knowing how to play at least some material in all these genres. His Renaissance/Mideival rep is probably as extensive as his others at this point.
mindaflame, I beg to disagree, Morse has done a pretty good job with Purp too, so Malmsteen could have as well. And Blackmore is more advanced as a player now than ever before (most musicians do improve well into old age, unless they develop capal tunnel s.., or arthritis. He's still in shape and quicker and as explosive as ever. Saw him on a Renaissance tour. He was still unbelievable. He was as good fingerstyling it as with his more usual pickstyle. Also played lute, vihuella, and hurdy gurdy.
We all know Yngwie is one of the most virtuous guitar players of the era, I don't see why he has to showboat the whole time he's on stage thinking he still has to prove that. He tries so hard to gather the attention of everybody, while taking it away from the rest of the band, who are also very talented musicians. It's the Ian Gillan Band, not Yngwie Malmsteen...
yeah, he's just doing his thing, like you said. If that were Blackmore out there doing the same thing, people'd be like: "coool!" Sure Yngwie didn't hold a gun to Gillan's head and say: "you ARE going to let ME play, RIGHT?"
I met Yngwie twice & he was very cool, laid back & nothing like what ppl made him out to be. He was one of the nicest guys/musicians I've ever met & his wife put my girlfriend at the time & myself on the guest list. I was awesome & a very good time.
Yes, agree very much with you! Met him 3x in (magical!!)spring/summer '94 on 7thSign tour, also w/my wife at time. We did bus, backstage and soundcheck on different nights, as she and i were on a little vacation/road trip. Time of my life!
I just don't get why Yngwie didn't join Purp when he had the chance after Ritchie left. He could of filled those shoes better than Steve, although Steve's pretty incredible as well.
The reason he did not do it is because purple is no more, they were the greatest in their day, but they already gave all the creativity they had in them. watching them live today is very, very sad. Ritchie was smart enough to retire from heavy rock while people still thought the world of him...he knew today with people like Malmsteen roaming the earth, he would just be 'one more old blues guy', in a way it's better that way, so that we can always remember him in his legendary days.
you, BenW and johnafirth are all right. It mighta been nice to see what woulda become of him and DP if he joined 'em right outta the gate instead of Steeler/Alcatrazz, while DP still had something left in 'em. Yngwie got too much creativity n energy in him to have others hold him back. Most all his albums are 12-14songs. DP's more bluesbased, Yngwie more classical. Dont knowbout you, but i can't see IanPaice ever (wanting to) playing any of the doublekick bassdrum.

He can play "any" style of guitar/genre BUT decided long ago he would try something different and stick to it regardless of what people say, true it's not about fast playing but don't forget he's a virtuoso, he has a title to keep. The compositions of his orchestras(done by himself) and his songs are unique and when it comes to the notes he plays unless you know what he's doing then it just sounds crappy.
skaaaaaater 1 year ago
@skaaaaaater i do know yngwies style and NO he cant play 'any' genre. if you dont believe me see him try playing blues. it sucks, he puts the same fiddley-didley stuff in. 'unless you know what he's doing'? haa i thought music was suppose to sound great, not being broken up into theoretical analytical structures so people can like it just because they appreciate what weird scale/notes the person used. Also his compositions were good when they cameout, after tat it bacame boring.
billygnrvr 1 year ago
@billygnrvr Don't get me wrong, blues has absolutely nothing to do with just speed nor just the scales. He can indeed play the blues, his hendrix covers might have had fast licks but if u listened closely u would've felt wat he was playing. Music is supposed to sound great but every individual has his own tastes in music. Some ppl say ahh too slow, too dry, too melodic or too simple. Theory just helps u understand wat's going on btw. In compliments to that, ur ears need to fully hear everything.
skaaaaaater 1 year ago
@skaaaaaater no i cant feel what he is playing, you cant just pt fast classical pganini inspired licks in jimmi hendrix covers.. end of story.
billygnrvr 1 year ago
@HyperfastMalmsteen Extremly naive thinking mate. If musicianship would only be about skill then the best guitarists in the world would be Paco De Lucia and other crazy flamenco guitarists, not to even mention all the ultra skilled jazz / jazz fusion guitarists out there. Some people chose to create, some people chose to recreate. The definition between Blackmore and Yngwie.

Ok, NOT Bernie Torme? Do you actually mean Steve Morse, not Steve Morris? As this is not DP, did SteveMorse play some with Gillan before latest DP incarnation? Don't believe he did, i could be wrong.

Steve Morris is the guitarist on Ian Gillan's solo albums beginning with Naked Thunder, Toolbox....
Not to be confused with Steve Morse

ah, thanks! lost track of 'Gillan' after the Torme days.

Freddie Mercury was able to sound just like his albums as well.
tothatextent 2 years ago
don't agree. sometimes Ian would sing so badly it looked like a bit of disrespect for the audience and a race for money. and unfortunately his singing ability really decreased in the late 90s. I believe it is a loss of breathing capacity. or maybe he just doesn't care much. if you need examples - Moscow 98 and 2002.

coz Ritchie could compose riffs and soloes, songs and lyrics like no other, he was/is a great composer.
Ok, Yngwie can play Highway Star's solo maybe better than Rotchie, but it is ritchie who wrote this solo...
so, I prise guitarists not only by their techique, but their talent of composition. In this way Ritchie is #1
georgiansolitaire 2 years ago 2
...absolutely agree...nothing works as when Ritchie plays...I've been lucky and I've seen Purple so many years ago, 'round '74, and it's unforgettable the sensation I've felt. I've seen the shining talent of all them pass through my body!!
ludwig6660 2 years ago
Really? Are U so fucking sure? Richie built that solo of some Mozart's progression
gansfridrih 2 years ago
Yngwie better than Blackmore?? what the fuck are you saying?
in a technical view, maybe Yngwie is better than Ritchie, but being good guitarist doesn't meen ONLY to have good technique, coz guitarist is MUSICIAN, not sportsmen.
and if we compare them as compositors, Ritchie is probably the GREATEST guitarist in the world

probably in only his 1st 10yrs here in the US, YM spawned more great guitarists, if not pure wannabes, than RB has in his entire career. I never heard bands in the 70-80's trying to sound like Blackmore or Rainbow, however TONS of guitarist and bands since YM have tried to attain his sound/technique and neoclassical style. The blues/rock marriage had already been made when RB came on the scene. Maybe someone tried (UliRoth?) but Yngwie made famous the marriage of classical/metal, agree?
screaminone 2 years ago
answer to some others on the ego thing:why is the bassplayer standing center stage, not once but twice, isn't it Gillans' band? Why is Yngwie standing behind the guitarist or bassist for most of this jam (and once behind both all together,)and only steps forward to the SIDE of the stage for his solo, which wasn't extended? The ego thing is an all-to-convenient target for the haters these days, with no substance.

fuck me that was awful, specially at the start. Does nobody have a sense of timing? Even the drummer?
elmo667 3 years ago
I love Gillan, Deep Purple, and even Yngwie, but this was a total mess. With everyone bopping around on stage doing their own thing with no sense of cohesion . . . it reminded me of one of those really awful "all star jams" where they throw a bunch of VIP megastars on a stage and let them all butcher a classic. It also kind of reminded me of those "rock and roll fantasy camps" where you got some stars jamming and a bunch of noobs just plonking around on stage. This was bad.
JW
jwatson626 3 years ago 16
@jwatson626 You are totally right!!! In this concret meaning and generally too. (All fest jams are terrible! I had the possibility to take part in a few, but rather avoided the stage.)

guyfred666 1 year ago
@guyfred666 I love a song with 63 vocalists and 47 lead guitar solos. "We're Stars" is a great example --- yeah, you're all stars and you should stay that way in your own bands. Too many Chiefs and no Indians. What the heck?
jwatson626 1 year ago
@jwatson626 lol,i hate also when satriani and company destroy classics on the G3s
guyfred666 1 year ago
@guyfred666 I just can't deal with Satriani, or Vai for that matter. I need a song that I can sing along to, not 3 hours of acrobatic noodling on the neck and whammy. Don't get me wrong, I respect their talent, but it just doesn't do anything for me. Yngvie, on the other hand, always worked well for me. Catchy licks, good vocalists. He may pay them all 30 cents an hour, but he puts together a good team regardless.
jwatson626 1 year ago

His Renaissance/Mideival rep is probably as extensive as his others at this point.
pokbacsi100 3 years ago
mindaflame, I beg to disagree, Morse has done a pretty good job with Purp too, so Malmsteen could have as well. Also played lute, vihuella, and hurdy gurdy.
pokbacsi100 3 years ago
We all know Yngwie is one of the most virtuous guitar players of the era, I don't see why he has to showboat the whole time he's on stage thinking he still has to prove that. He tries so hard to gather the attention of everybody, while taking it away from the rest of the band, who are also very talented musicians. It's the Ian Gillan Band, not Yngwie Malmsteen...
flanzashreddah 3 years ago
you stupid fuck, Yngwie is rocken out on stage, he's just doing what he knows
ilikeboobies01 3 years ago
yeah, he's just doing his thing, like you said. If that were Blackmore out there doing the same thing, people'd be like: "coool!" Sure Yngwie didn't hold a gun to Gillan's head and say: "you ARE going to let ME play, RIGHT?"

I just don't get why Yngwie didn't join Purp when he had the chance after Ritchie left. He could of filled those shoes better than Steve, although Steve's pretty incredible as well.
pokbacsi100 3 years ago 2
I think Yngwie likes to be in charge. That wouldn't happen with Purple.
johnafirth 3 years ago 7
Because Yngwies music is nothing like purples?
BenWGray 3 years ago 4
The reason he did not do it is because purple is no more, they were the greatest in their day, but they already gave all the creativity they had in them. watching them live today is very, very sad. Ritchie was smart enough to retire from heavy rock while people still thought the world of him...he knew today with people like Malmsteen roaming the earth, he would just be 'one more old blues guy', in a way it's better that way, so that we can always remember him in his legendary days.
mindaflame7 3 years ago
you, BenW and johnafirth are all right.
