when I heard this song was a cover I thought people meant of an REM instrumental off Life's Rich Pagent called Underneath the Bunker. Am I an olive short of a pizza or does someone out there agree that they are at least similar?
I have met kim, david a joey, and now i am on my quest for frank. i almost cried when i met joey, and he gave me his guitar pick that he used on stage.
If I was to name my influences as a guitarist, Joey Santiago is way up there. The personality he puts into his crazy, dissonant riffs and squeedles is amazing.
its hard to believe that after all the hard things that the pixies had been through, they could still even play together. like, when charles threw his guitar at kim in stuttgart, or how joey would bang up his guitar on stage when kim was drunk, it seems they all had problems, and in 2004, the drummer started doing drugs/drinking, but the pixies remain an amazing band, i just dont understand it. it would be awesome if they put out a new album.
I seem to recall this song played in a little black and white experimental film called "Drumstruck" about 20 years ago. That version had a magnificent sax harmony playing the background. If you happen to run across it you should check it out.
The Pixies aren't punk, they're a band like no other. They have few, if any punk roots, its mostly alternative rock with some surf music thrown in (eg Bossanova), though they sound like no band that's ever lived
Sure, I know, they are not punk. Rather post punk in the broad sense (that's what the alternative scene of the 80's very much is). I wanted to say that i don't like the "simplcicity" and "sincerity" stuff that came with Sex Pistols. Pixies are still very simple musically, nevertheless one of the best bands of the history. Surf music is also quite primitive.
There lyrics are genius, so deep and so many double meanings they really make you think. I hope your not saying the Pixies are simplistic in general. Cause thats an insult to this genius group.
@Nickstradamus In Mexico it is.... of a vampire hunter comic book called Lugo... is not that they have the license for this song, but they usually relate it to him.
eh, there's a couple that are kind of boring, but i can't think of a single other band that i only dislike a couple from. there's virtually no filler on their albums.
I think among guitar players is where Joey gets his respect - and the world should know too! I was blown away when I found out he did all this work sans effects or any extras - strictly volume and fretwork!! A superhero of music, truly unique, and I've heard a really nice guy.
This is a great version of the Surftones classic. I also recommend you check out an obscure experimental film called "Drumstruck" If I recall, and don't hold me to this, but there is a version of this song played live. An interesting addition is the use of a amazing saxophone harmony line which adds an great layer to the song.
pixies are amazing and i love this song! only j maschis can claim to be a better indie-rock guitarist than Joe. I can play this song on guitar, but not as well as Joe.
always feel like i've just watched a tarantino film when i hear this

Don't forget that this song owes to The Shadows at least as much as it does to Morricone ;P

originally by Dave Myers & the Surftones

'mtwallet' is right; The Surftones originally did this song in 1964.
The surf guitar sound influenced Morricone's westerns. And Morricone's chorals influenced the harmonies in this cover.

@MorriconeRocks
Yes, this was an influence, it just helped Morricone's brilliant compositions.

Something similar: built to spill, codeine. Built to Spill is one of Joey Santiago's favorite groups...

Suggest something similar? Nothing that won't seem a bit second rate in comparison to this masterpiece, I'm afraid!
