All this armchair intellectualizing is laughable. What Garfield really represents is the stereotypical view of an American-Italian gangster-affiliated cat (according to census, these accounted for 1.04% of the US population in 2010). While not being blatantly insensitive and provocative, this skit, and its comic strip source material, promotes a message of hatred and intolerance to all Iti-American mafia-associated, pizza-chomping, pepperoni-snorting, bad soccer-playing cats. For shame!
I'm looking at all of the many stitches that have been sewn into my sides thanks to the hearty bouts of laughter that the Garfield comic strip is responsible for and thinking myself a little nutty for asking, "Jim Davis, please make me laugh some more?"
Garfield? This is a diagram of the food chain. Garfield? You're here. And that's a mouse down there. Any questions? Where's pizza? Any questions? And that's a mouse down there. You're here. This is a diagram of the food chain. Garfield? And that's a mouse down there.
@punipunipunisher I'm going to be honest with you, I thought you would have said you ordered pizza with your haunted hamburger. You didn't take the easy way out, and for that I salute you.
jons need to control the means of life says a lot about his psyche and his god complex over the lesser intellect of the cat species, this mindset is oedipus in nature and clearly a cry for his mothers bossom....jons a mommas boy...
I think the repeating of Jon saying 'Garfield' symbolizes that Garfield and Jon are growing further and further apart, as if there was a growing void between the two of them, causing Jon to repeat Garfield's name several times, just so he can hear him on the other side of the void.
I think "pizza" is meant to symbolize man's search for meaning in an unfamiliar world. Jon Arbuckle symbolizes society, attempting to place Garfield into a strict, hierarchical category, and when Garfield, symbolizing "everyman", asks "Where's pizza?", what he really is doing is rebelliously asking "What about what I want?"
"Where's Pizza" is also a metaphor used to describe the genocide of Native Americans which people of today look at like it never happened. Davis was always sure to make us remember.
I agree, but I think that we're making angels and demons out of the narrative here. Both characters are ambiguous; for instance, Jon has aspirations to break out of the mold by declaring his wish to grow a moustache, and Garfield seems to fit comfortably with the ebb and flow of Mondays.
Don't get me wrong, you're offering deep analysis here. But I believe that in order to comprehend the characters as Davis wished one needs to examine the actions, not just the symbols.
Let us not forget Jon's imposing of labels on Garfield. In this strip, Jon labels Garfield on the food chain so that he must take on the worker role, that is, Jon is implying that Garfield should work for his meals. In a Marxist sense, Jon is exerting his power over Garfield by owning the means of production (Pizza) and imposing labels upon the creature to retain his power.
Oh for the love of Christ, God and the Common Man! Of course you're not stupid! PIZZA IS NOT FOOD! I've spent most of my 106 years on this stinking planet trying to get this message across but it just won't sink in. I can't even convince Mr. Tagliani who owns the pizza shop down the street even though he has a full-fledged eighth grade education!
I don't believe there is an answer outside of the realm of metaphysics to answer the question, "where's pizza?" It is laughable for any reasonable person to assume that pizza can be found on a chart which illustrates the food chain.
This was mildly funny for the 5 seconds it took to read the original strip. After 6 seconds I remembered what a douchebag Jim Davis was and how Garfield has a small percentage of amusing strips. Maddox was right.
