@esclarmonde1 This is truly the most exquisite tenor I've ever heard. All that power, and still the taste and artistry to channel it so exquisitely. What miraculous singing.
@esclarmonde1 I am on FB, Alexandra, but won't be for long. Just too many problems with gettting hacked, etc. Thanks for the invite, though, and for responding.
In terms of sheer beauty of sound Aragall is at the very top of the heap together with Björling, Wunderlich etc. I heard him in Tosca years ago and the almost liquid resonance of his sound was breathtaking - it was irresistible. Before every high note he would freak out a bit but he more than made up for it through the quality of his voice.
It must be my fault, however I can't help to notice some flatness in his high notes. What is it, too much forcing? It could be that the high notes are too dark. Or am I totally wrong?
Aragall combines the best vocal qualities of Pavarotti and Domingo and sublimates them by his unique sweetness that steals the listener's heart with its sincerity.
yes, jaume is a catalan like carreras and caballe, check him out on cd with montserrat singing the opera, faust, absolutely beautiful, also he is by far the best cavaradossi in tosca, seen him perform this 3 times live, his voice live is amaing.
Mille grazie rychehed for the info re:Aragall's Catalan heritage.I am so impressed with his voice from these youtube clips,I intend to buy the Faust cd you suggested. My question to you is which 'Faust' opera,Gounod's or Mefistofele by Boito?By the way, just from these clips,I much prefer the timbre and tone of Aragall's voice to that of Carreras. What's your opinion? Thanks again.
Carreras had a chance at becoming a good tenor, never great, but sang too often and in roles that were too heavy . His voice was spent before his awful illness
Che bella voce! What a wonderful lyric tenor this man is.For reasons unknown to me,he was not recognized that much in America for the great lyric tenor he truly is. By the way,is Aragall a Catalano like Carreras and Caballe?Mille grazie for sharing this beautiful aria with us.
Finally! I was looking for some material about Aragall!. Even though I think this is not his best performance, it remains an icon of bel canto. Bravo Maestro! Y gracias a Onegin65 por el excelente material.
Yes he is indeed, even now, being older. Even today he never lost his timidness, if you go and meet him, after a performance ( he still is doing wonderful evening of songs), and you just want him to know, how gorgeous he was, he´s so incredibly modest. It´s wonderful when he embraces and kisses you, although being so modest, his eyes show, how glad he is. He really cares for his friends very much. And he still incredibly charismatic!!!
I will certainly. Just imagine he will be 70 this year !!! For me, Jaime Aragall was and will always be the BEST tenor for me. He´s jsut unique!!!!! And a wonderful humang being!!!!
Short as it is, I think this is my most favoured aria. And, peculiarly, I think Mario Lanza is my preferred singer, even before the younger Pavorotti, De Stefano, Wunderlich and Jussi Bjorling. That said, this rendering is magnificent and I am sure I shall be revisiting it.
Giacomo was never underrated, his nerves would not have had permitted him to be one of the top 3 even though he deserved one of the top spots. That is why he retired for a while, then reappeared. Nerves are something some singers can never totally control.
Saw him in Esclarmond at the Metropolitan Opera House. Would love to see a video of him doing the work. Pure heaven. Thanks for posting "Amor ti vieta."
Well when one hears him sing this lovely aria, it is no wonder that Pavarotti considered Aragall's voice better than his own.Solid from bottom to top, and the sense of line is unsurpassed.Bravo, and thanks Onegin65-yet another hit!!!

@freirant you are right, he sings flat frequently here

@freirant I have never heard of Aragall singing under the notes or singing out of key, forcing? possibly.

I think Aragall and Pertile have a lot in common, actually. Class acts both :) I'm not sure this performance shows JA in his best light.

Ho sempre ammirato la voce di Jaume, splendida, la più bella di tutta la sua generazione, purtroppo non sempre assistita da una base tecnica adeguata

I agree that Aragall was the greatest tenor of the 20th C and I,m not alone in my appraisal; it's also Luciano Pavarotti's
