This is one of the fastest guitar players alive and one of the most talented.Only a guitar player can understand the stuff he is doing is so beyond what you can understand if you are not a guitar player.
Go back and listen to all of the other Rock and Jazz Rock guitarists of 1976 and you'll find Al is one of the greatest ever. Jaco is deffinately the best Bass Player in 76. Al De Miola is the Jazz Rock version of Santana, just with more notes and breaks in the music. Guys like Al De Miola and John McLaughlin paved the way for insane playing like Alan Holdsworth, Frank Gamble, Eddy Van Halen and shredders of all styles. These guys played fast long before metal guitar players were invented.
Finally inteligent coments on you tube, took me almost 3 years to find u guys, All i have to say about AL is, that he's from another planet, a gift for us... A Pioneer in fusion. Al is all in a diferent category. not saying that he better than any other hes just diferent.. tx for posting.
One of my favorite guitarrist . These are my 5 favorites guitarrist(not in order) : Jan Ackerman (FOCUS) , John Fogerty ( CCR ) Pat Metheny , Al di Meola and Brian May ( QUEEN)
@ccrstucook: Those are a really interesting combination of favorites. Nice recipe! I can relate, mine are the same along with Phil Keaggy, Terje Rypdal, Steve Hackett, Anthony Phillips, Peter Banks, the two original guys from the Alice Cooper Band (the interplay!) and Marc Bolan from TRex. Does that make any sense? It does to me :)
Al DiMeola, Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, & Lenny White made up the legendery jazz fusion group, "Return to Forever". I saw them live in AnnArbor, MI at the Hill Auditorium in '76 on the UM campus.
Al's playing and writing is amazing. I just wish his tone was a little different. Sometimes it seems thin, because it's on an electric guitar, but at the same time, it doesn't have that thickness because he's no abusing the effects. I dunno. It's very puzzling
@FarazR2: He's known for his technigue not for his tone. I think he used a ColorSound fuzz back in the day. That was a popular Jazz Rock tone in the 70's.
@jeffbeckgeek1 I would not EVER put over-rated sanatana in the same catagory, or class of Meola. There is a VAST difference, and Al is clearly superior to santana. I feel ill even having to justify this by having to input santana's name next ot Al.
I saw him on tour supporting this album in 1976 in Saratoga, NY at the race track, opening for Kenny Loggins. Al was ridiculously good. I walked out on the ever-fruity Kenny Loggins.
i grew up listening to his music... i was 5 then my father would play his album on the turntable.... hahaha still loves how he play... now that i am 30........ a timeless piece for a timeless master..............
I'd certainly not want to to lower him to a "rock guitar" instrumentalist. He's far better than that - a lazz-rock pioneer -certainly not a 3-chord rock guitarist ;)
@lamentate07 This is not Rock. This is Fusion. This didn't get much radio play when it came out in '76 because it was considered too much like rock for Jazz stations, and too much like Jazz for Rock stations.
@gebass6 it is fusion, but it's coming more from the rock than jazz side imo. most jazz guitarists do not consider Al jazz. at least not anymore. How people thought at the time is different to how they think now. Hindsight is a wonderful thing ;-)
The transition from one melody to the other is just majestic. Can't get no better. My GOD love this guy execution SHEEEEEEE t, hahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
@petete21521 the transiction switches from Aflat to Emajor7 with melody on Fsharp major,.... me and my played it in 80s... It was really challenging, but we did it..

Def love me some al di meola, but I'm definitely more of a McLaughlin fan, i just feel more emotion in him.
spectre1324 2 years ago
Di Meola is a pure genius as this piece so brilliantly illustrates. All of the distinct and separate passages fit together so well.
What amazes me most is the incredible emotional sound he gets from that Les Paul, and his blazingly fast and complex solos leave you breathless.
I've seen him live on 3 occasions, and he's just as awesome live as he is in the studio. A real treat.
