@FatAndy133 Dick-measuring has nothing to do with it. I stated my opinion of DD, burkardheike responded, and I responded again - simple as that. Why are YouTube comments taken as seriously as they sometimes are? Although I agree with everything else you've said, get over yourself. There's no need to start making this personal.
@burkardheike Planxty couldn't touch DD on their worst day...except maybe when it comes to the songs. Instrumentally, I wouldn't mention them in the same breath. The Bothies would be a better comparison.
@deslm I'm pretty sure it isn't a competition. Why are YouTube comments always a dick-measuring contest among people who aren't even a part of the bands they are measuring? I just don't get it. I love both De Dannan (both the old Frankie Gavin + Alec Finn band and the two new Frankie Gavin minus Alec Finn bands) and Planxty. Both did wonders for the music, as did Bothy, and they are all kick-ass setups.
Excellent as always. Glasgow Lullaby & Snowy Cordillero from the album Half Set In Harlem are great as well - you won't find their take on these songs anywhere else.
I love to see De Dannan in person (twice only sadly), once at the Somerville Theater in Massachusetts and 1x in NYC (forget the name of the place but they were on stage like you see here - I got to sit front row with my wife (someone left me tickets at the booth, wink) and not only is Frankie a great joke teller but he plays the fiddle a bit too.
This is good stuff to wake up to in the morning! Thanks to my cousin Jim for pointing out Dannan is on Youtube!
This is correct The tunes are definitely Tom Billy's, Ryan's Jig, The Sandman Reel, The Clogher Reel (which is apparently another name for The Flowers Of Redhill) from "Selected Jigs, Reels & Songs"
Going by the notes from outshore and paidushko , assuming they're both right, the tunes should be "Tom Billy's, Ryan's Jig, The Sandman Reel, The Clogher Reel (which is apparently another name for The Flowers Of Redhill)
Unusual to see Johnny Moynihan join Ringo on bodhran...Johnny seemed unhappy with the string tuning. Imagine, he was in Sweeney`s Men, Planxty, De Danann, Moonshine etc. What a travelling minstrel!
Those boys are really playing for their pints. Notice how at the start of the video the pints are all lined up on the first table in front of the stage.
Wow, what a great moment caught on video. Shame the sound quality is crap!

@Dayepepes LOL! That's true. I guess you could also say that DD's box playing was a bit better that Planxty's as well.

This is one of their best sets, taken from their best album - Selected jigs, reels & songs. Great music, played wonderfully.

I couldn't agree more. I really love the sound of the tenor banjo on this one.
